━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ THOUGH IT WAS FALL, Penny sat by the pool in somebody’s backyard, watching the tiny leaves fall from trees above and become trapped in the water. Penny nearly made the comparison between her and those reddish-yellow bits of nature before cutting off the thought with a sarcastic snort, nobody around to hear it but herself. It was one of those big, “modern” (the word meant nothing to her anymore, she’d heard men call themselves ‘modern’ thousands of times throughout her life) houses, mostly glass and concrete. It wasn’t shiny, not decorated with gold as Penny would’ve liked, but she’d already ventured inside and found the safe in the basement. Raiding that and the jewellery box upstairs, Penny’s pockets were stuffed full of gold chains, fingers fitting as many rings as possible.
She still had that vampire’s lapis lazuli band, though it looked odd next to her new collection of finer metals. Nevertheless, Penny would cherish all of them until she could get back to her horde and add to her collection.
With one hand stuck in her jacket’s pocket, Penny’s fingers twisted around the chains, gently feeling each little link, studying it without her eyes. She liked… being near it all. She couldn’t help herself.
Pulling out her phone, she sent her sister the address and instructions to come through the back door. It was just outside of town, along a private strip of large, residential houses, though none were as big or as updated as this one. They weren’t nearly as secluded, either. The trees surrounding this property were large and bushy even as fall neared, now red and orange instead of their regular green. If she focused, Penny could picture it; luscious and bright against the warm, summer sun.
She breathed in the picture, and waited until she heard the gate click open. Turning, Penny beamed, waving her free hand at her sister. “Hey, you found it!” She grinned, that small strip of bliss bleeding out in the presence of the only family she had left. Otherwise, Penny would have barely smiled. “Look at this. They didn’t even close their pool for the winter.” Turning back to face it, she sighed. “Do you think we could live in a place like this?” For the weekend while the family was gone, maybe, but not any longer than that. You’d think with such prize possessions they wouldn’t keep a spare key under their welcome mat.

Mystic Falls was a strange place, that was something that Cassandra had figured out pretty quickly after she and Penny had made their way to the town, but quite quickly it was starting to feel like home. Cassandra knew that was all thanks to Sebastian, they had headed to Mystic Falls because that’s where the locator spell had taken them but Cassandra hadn’t known what they would find when they got there. They were meant to find Sebastian so they could get his key and she could lead the guy Penny was working with to the dark object that she had hidden away centuries before but Cassandra was delaying doing that for as long as she could. She knew that it was a part of the deal that Penny had made in order to bring her back but there was something about the guy that Cassandra didn’t trust and she knew that she didn’t want the object falling into his hands. He was just the kind of person that their father’s friend had warned her about when he had handed the dark object over to her and Cassandra knew that she wasn’t going to hand it over willingly. Finding out that Sebastian had remained desiccated until recently hadn’t been something that she had expected, nor was the fact that he still felt the same away about her that she felt about him. He was the reason that she didn’t want to leave Mystic Falls, he had found a place where he belonged in the town and Cassandra knew that he had never really had that before so she knew that she couldn’t tear him away from that. Whether Penny would decide that she wanted to stay or not remained to be seen but Cassandra hoped that she would come around to the idea. Ever since their parents died it had been just the two of them for the most part and even though things had changed when Sebastian had come into their lives Cassandra knew that she didn’t want to be separated from her sister again either so she hoped that both of the people she loved would decide to stay in the same place. That day she had received a rather strange message from Penny and Cassandra found herself checking the phone she had been given for the hundredth time as she came to a stop outside of the house. She was certain that something must be wrong, that Penny must have given her the wrong address, because the house was so much bigger than any that she had ever seen before but as she headed through the back gate like her sister had instructed she soon spotted the familiar figure. “I didn’t even know places like this existed,” Cassandra admitted as she took a few more steps into the garden. She and Penny had agreed to spend some time together that day but this wasn’t what she had expected at all. “What are we doing here Pen?” she asked, pretty sure that it was something that they shouldn’t be doing. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY FELT DIFFERENT WHEN she was around her sister. She was allowed to be herself, and though that came with a slew of coldness that would always be present, Penny was certainly sweeter and calmer. Not like she was as a child━that wasn’t even an issue of her ‘mask’ anymore; she’d burned that piece of her long ago. But she was somewhere in the middle. Not as harsh as she had been with Lawrence the night before, and not as sweet as her falseness to him on the day they met. The sun hit her face, baking her skin despite the air around being icy, and she thought of him━he’d go up like a Roman candle right now. Normally, Penny didn't like the sun much either, but the thought had her snickering.
Seeing Cassandra burned warmth in her chest instead, forcing Penny’s lips to curve upwards excitedly. Would her sister like it━a place like this? She didn’t give much of an answer to an untrained ear, but Penny knew her sister, though she didn’t know what it was like to be bombarded with a new world so suddenly. Perhaps she should’ve been trying to ease Cassandra into it, but what was the point of that? She would’ve already seen ‘too much’ on the drive here, anyway.
“Yeah, they’re becoming more common now. Not in small communities like Mystic Falls, but still.” She shrugged, smiling at her sister before turning back to the water, tucking her hand back in her pocket. “I wanted to check the place out. It’s not for sale, but one house down the street is. Are we staying in Mystic Falls for long?” Penny asked, dark eyes dancing back up to her sister curiously. She’d go wherever Cassandra wanted to; they wouldn’t be separated again━Penny vowed that with her life. “Any luck finding Sebastian?” That was Cassandra’s forte, not Penny’s. She was still figuring this out as she went along, trying to repay the warlock and all.

There was so much that Cassandra was trying to get her head around right now but she knew that in time she would get there. She had seen the way the world had moved on from the Other Side but it was so different being able to experience all of it for herself. This was a chance that she had never thought that she would get to have and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. She didn’t trust the warlock that had brought her back one bit and she knew that she wanted to get Penny as far away from him as possible but that was going to take time so for now all she could do was get to know her sister again and figure out how to make her see that the guy was up to no good. All he was interested in was getting his hands on the dark object that Cassandra had been given to protect all those years ago and she knew that she couldn’t let it fall into his hands. “It’s a gorgeous house and I love that it has a garden as well,” she admitted. The swimming pool was a little strange to her since she had never seen one before but it was clear that Penny liked it so Cassandra did too. As Penny asked if they were staying in Mystic Falls for long, Cassandra’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I think I would like to stay here if you’d be up for that. I think we could build a real life for ourselves here,” she said gently. There were other supernaturals in town and while when she’d died that would have been seen as a bad thing, so many had decided to call the town their home and hadn’t been caught so it was enough to make her think that perhaps they could do the same. “Could we ever afford a place like this?” It hadn’t been long since Cassandra had been brought back so she had no money to her name and she wasn’t sure whether her sister had a lot. Either way she knew that she didn’t want to be separated from her sister and she didn’t want to be separated from Sebastian again either so as long as they stuck together then that would be good enough for her. As Penny asked if she’d found him, Cassandra nodded. “I did. He didn’t have his key with him but it was so good to see him again,” she admitted. “He’s still the same Sebastian I remember.” Cassandra knew that he wouldn’t have aged at all given that he was a vampire but personality wise he was still the same guy she had fallen for. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ STAY HERE? PENNY HADN’T stayed anywhere for a long while after Cassandra’s death, and certainly not after Alice’s. Her best friend was likely still out there somewhere, living a life she didn’t want Penny in, and Penny had to accept that. She had her sister back, and she was happy with that blessing; it’d just been so long since she’d ached to have her again. She loved Cassandra, obviously, but centuries gave one’s grief time to settle. Penny had let go of the idea of living a life with her sister, just as she’d let go of the abundant lives she was supposed to have afterwards. She still couldn’t bring herself to tell Cassandra about the other losses she’d suffered━it never seemed like the right time.
In any case, though settling scared her, Penny would obviously do it. She wouldn’t find love again, but she’d have familial love━the love she also thought she’d never have.
“Yeah, I guess that’s fine,” Penny had no idea what life they could build, though. And in a few decades they’d have to move on, anyway. People would begin to notice the lack of aging.
Dark eyes skittered over the pool, glancing at each leaf floating above the water and comparing it to the ones that’d sunken to its depths. If they got a place like this, they’d definitely take better care of it. “Sure.” The edge of her lips ticked up in a wry smile as she looked sideways at her sister. “These days, life isn’t about affording things. It’s about paying the bank back for the money they gave you for those things.” But they would have to be approved for a mortgage, and while Penny had a terrific job to support one person, it didn’t look all that great on paper. She likely had enough savings to buy this place and the neighbour’s with cash. “But yeah, we can afford it. It would be pretty awful if I’ve been alive this long and still can’t figure out how to make money, right?” Penny chuckled dryly. “I’ll contact the real estate agent━the lady selling the house━and see if we can schedule a time to visit and check it out.”
Her smile turned genuine when Cassandra brought up Sebastian and the fact that they’d reunited. She was happy for her sister, but she also hoped that meant they could find his key and get it to━oh. “Damn.” Penny sighed, but tried to remain happy that they could reconnect, and it was everything Cass hoped it would be. Even if Penny had completely given up on love and thought it was nothing more than a bunch of bullshit, she was happy to see her sister enjoying it. And she genuinely hoped it worked out better for Cassandra than it did Penny━that this wasn’t some sort of genetic curse.
“That’s great anyway. I’m glad you got to see him again; that ol’ warlock can get his key anytime.” Not really, but Penny didn’t want Cassandra to worry━she’d have a word with Sebastian herself if he didn’t have it soon. “Seems this town’s got lots of old friends,” Penny scoffed, “First Sebastian, and now this Phoenix I haven’t seen since… oh, the French Revolution?” She laughed, but then realized Cassandra would have no idea about that timeframe, and quickly added, “Sometime between seventeen-eighty-nine and seventeen-ninety-nine.” She couldn’t remember the date exactly, only that it was during that decade.
“This town is weird. There’s a school built exclusively for supernatural kids━can you imagine that? Having so many in your town that you open an X-Men-like school for them?” Again, Penny interjected her own statement, “Uh, they were picture stories for kids built around the idea of mutant children with certain abilities. They made movies about them, and there was a school in those stories where the mutant kids were raised.” She explained, hoping that would all make sense. Penny always thought she’d have to explain the big things to Cassandra, such as mortgages and realtors, not movie franchises about kids with abilities like their own.

Cassandra knew that they had a task to do, they needed to find the keys to get the dark object so they could hand it over to the warlock who had brought her back but the truth was that Cassandra just didn’t trust the man. She had sworn years ago that she would keep the dark object safe and far away from anyone who would want to use it for the wrong reason and she had kept her word but there was something about the warlock that told her that he wasn’t going to do anything good with it. She got the feeling that he had hurt people in the past and she knew that she didn’t want Penny to end up being the next person to get hurt. She wanted to find a way to get her sister far away from him but she knew that she needed to bide her time for now and suggesting that they stay in Mystic Falls seemed like a pretty good way of doing just that. Cassandra had already found Sebastian and it was clear to her that his feelings for her hadn’t changed anymore than her feelings for him had so she knew that she wanted to find something that would work for all of them and she hoped that this was it. “Are you sure?” Cassandra asked. She could see that her sister was a little hesitant, Penny and Sebastian didn’t age but right now Cassandra didn’t have that same problem. She knew that she wanted to stay with them both and there were ways in which she could make herself immortal but right now she knew that she just wanted to take it one step at a time. Cassandra hadn’t been back for very long so she knew better than to try and rush anything but she couldn’t help but think about what her life could be like with the people who mattered most to her and she knew that she wanted that more than anything. “Really?” she asked, unable to believe it as Penny confirmed that they could afford a place like this. She didn’t understand how it worked but if they could find somewhere like this then they really could build a good life for themselves and that was what Cassandra wanted. “It would be but I don’t want you to have to pay for everything. I’ll try and find a job so I can pay my way,” Cassandra assured her. She knew that it probably wouldn’t be easy considering that there was so much that she still had to learn about the world but she knew that she really didn’t want to end up relying on her sister for everything and become a burden. “That would be great,” she nodded. “It doesn’t have to be this exact house but I would like a garden if we can,” she admitted, knowing that was the only thing she really had in mind. “Don’t worry, we’ll find it,” she assured her sister even though Cassandra wanted to make sure that they kept that key as far away from the warlock as possible. Cassandra was grateful to him for bringing her back and he had made it clear that he would send her back to the Other Side again if he didn’t get what he wanted but Cassandra wasn’t powerless either and she knew that she would do whatever she had to in order to stay with Penny and Sebastian. “I am too, it almost felt like no time had passed at all,” she admitted. The truth was that for Cassandra it hadn’t but it was different for Sebastian. He had spent such a long time desiccated until he was finally brought back and she knew that she didn’t want him to have to go through that again. As Penny spoke again, Cassandra arched an eyebrow as she looked over at her sister. “Are you sure he’s just a friend?” she asked, nudging her sister’s arm gently with her own. She knew that Penny didn’t have anyone and she didn’t really seem interested in finding someone either but Cassandra wanted her sister to be happy so she hoped she would find that now they were making plans to stay in town. As Penny explained about Mystic Falls, Cassandra’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I don’t know, I think a school for supernatural kids sounds like a pretty good thing,” she admitted as she looked over at her sister. “Life would have been so different for us if we’d had a place like that where we could learn about what we are and I know Sebastian really likes it there. I like what I’ve seen of Mystic Falls so far,” she added with a shrug. From what he had told her it sounded like he had found a place where he really did fit in there and she was happy for him. “If we’re really going to be sticking around do you know what you’d like to do with your time?” she asked, not sure whether her sister had a job in mind. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ WAS PENNY SURE? NO, OF COURSE NOT, BUT she wanted to be with her sister, and she wanted Cassandra to be as happy as possible. There was little hope for Penny in that department━she’d come to terms with it━but her sister still had a chance. “Yeah,” Penny forced a smile and nodded, trying to reassure her sister, “And don’t worry, seriously; I’ve got a lot saved up and I still have to teach you all the modern slang so you fit in.” The laugh that bubbled up was genuine as she pictured her sister in an early-two-thousands gangster/rapper getup, trying to pass as someone born in this century.
“A garden,” Penny nodded as though she was mentally noting it down, grinning as her eyes slid over the backyard, taking it all in. She’d get a gorgeous place for her sister, Penny decided. It would be somewhere safe and beautiful━a place they could call home.
No time passed at all? The only reason Penny didn’t make a rude comment was because it’d come from her sister. She wanted to snap about how many years she’d sat in agony, alone because either Penny killed everyone she was with or they didn’t want her anymore. But she knew Cass meant she could jump back in with Sebastian as if they’d never been apart, and Penny turned her head to hide the burn in her eyes. Jealousy ached in her chest, in a heart that had been long blackened and hollowed out from the life she’d lived without her sister.
When Cassandra nudged her, Penny looked back over and grinned, sure that all evidence of her glassy eyes had vanished. “He’s too… irritating,” Penny laughed, “Stuck up. Plus, he hasn’t stopped crying about his dead wife, even though she was long gone before I met him way back when. Now it’s… you know. Mutually beneficial.” Nudging her sister back in the same manner, her lips peeled back from her teeth in a mischievous grin. “What about you two? I bet you’ll spend a lot of time getting it on after being apart for so long, huh?” Penny crinkled her nose at the thought, but laughed again, and desperately hoped that Sebastian was decent in the sack━being long dead and all.
‘I don’t know, I think a school for supernatural kids sounds like a pretty good thing,’
It didn’t matter that Penny was taking night classes there, she’d still cast judgement on the place━it was one of her favourite hobbies. “Sure.” She muttered, “I can’t imagine a class full of little dragon kids ready to burn the place down or, more likely, one housing a bunch of witches lobbing objects at the teacher’s head.” Flashing Cassandra a wry smile, she shifted her hands to hold her elbows. “Like I said, Mystic Falls is… fine. I’ll stay wherever you are,” Her expression turned softer then, so did her voice. It was true, just hard for Penny to so freely express her feelings━especially when they were positive. She was out of practice.
“Well, I’ve secured myself a job at the museum as a mineralogy curator. I get to spend all day looking at gold and all those flashy things,” Shooting Cassandra another one of those cheeky grins, she was reminded of how she used to steal from that jewellery store as a child, and how her big sister was always rushing in to help when Penny got into trouble. “I’ve been figuring out night classes, too. Just general schooling━I like that. I go back every few years.” Because Cassandra had missed out on so much. They were best friends, they always had been, but Cassandra didn’t know the person her little sister had become━not really. Not in Penny’s mind, anyway. She felt like she’d lost who she was somewhere along the way, but here, with the only family she had left, it fluttered and bloomed deep inside her.
“Are you going to go to school, too? Maybe the Salvatore school, since you like it so much?” Penny’s voice was teasing, though she honestly hoped Cassandra would find something she enjoyed. “It might help you catch up with the modern world, y’know? And there won’t be any judgement… because they’re all weirdos, too.”

Cassandra would be the first to admit that this wasn’t how she had thought that her life would turn out but then again nothing had happened the way it shouldn’t have done. Their parents had been taken from them far too soon and then Cassandra had lost her life too. She had hated leaving Penny and Sebastian behind but she had hoped that they would at least have each other. As it turned out she had been wrong about that, Sebastian had been left desiccated and Penny had been left alone. Needless to say Cassandra had a lot of regrets about the way things had worked out but now that they were all in the same town she hoped that they would be able to work things out because the truth was that she didn’t want any of them to end up alone again. Asking Penny to stay in Mystic Falls was a big step but Cassandra knew deep down that she didn’t want to keep being on the move. She wanted to put down roots and build a life with Penny and Sebastian and she hoped that her sister wanted that too. Cassandra didn’t trust the warlock that Penny had worked with to bring her back and she knew that she wanted to find a way to get her sister away from him so hopefully here she would be able to do that. “If you’re sure. I don’t want to be a burden on you,” Cassandra said gently. When they were younger she had always done her best to look out for Penny so it was a little strange now that things were the other way around. So much had changed from the way it used to be back then, though, and Penny had seen the way the world changed so it was going to take Cassandra a while to catch up. As Penny spoke again, Cassandra found herself nodding. “It doesn’t have to be a big one, I just like the idea of being able to grow things,” Cassandra admitted. She knew that it would come in useful with her magic even though she had already seen that it wasn’t as difficult to get certain ingredients now as it once had been. There was just something so calming about the thought of being able to have her own on hand, though, and she knew that it was something that she would like to have if they could. “Is there anything you’d like our place to have?” she asked, not sure whether Penny had any preference at all. The way Penny went quiet when Cassandra talked about Sebastian didn’t go unnoticed and Cassandra’s expression softened. “I’m sorry if I said something wrong Pen,” she said gently as she placed her hand on her sister’s shoulder. It was easy to fall back into old habits with Sebastian because he’d spent most of the time that she’d been dead desiccated. It hadn’t been like that for Penny, though, and Cassandra would be lying if she said she wasn’t worried about saying the wrong thing and upsetting her sister because that really was the last thing she ever wanted to do. Penny seemed to cheer up when she talked about the phoenix she had mentioned, though, and as Penny said that he was irritating Cassandra couldn’t help but laugh along with her. “I think you might be protesting a little too much,” she teased. As her sister continued, Cassandra nodded in understanding. “The heart is a strange thing but it sounds like it has worked out for you regardless,” she said, glad that her sister had something even if it wasn’t love. As Penny spoke again, Cassandra’s cheeks flushed bright red. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said, old habits there proving hard to break since talking about that kind of thing wasn’t the done thing when Cassandra had died. She knew that she could trust her sister with anything but it was still a strange thing to talk about given the way they had been raised. “Now that would be quite amusing,” Cassandra admitted before her expression softened when Penny said that she would stay wherever she was. “I appreciate that Pen. If at any time you feel like you want to leave then let me know, my home is wherever you and Sebastian are,” she said gently. They were the two people in the world that she loved and she knew that as long as she had the two of them it really didn’t matter where they were. As Penny explained about her job, Cassandra couldn’t help but laugh. “That sounds perfect for you,” she grinned, shaking her head in amusement. “Please don’t go stealing anything this time though,” she added, her tone teasing as she spoke. She could still remember just how much trouble her sister used to get into for that back then. “That’s a good idea. Are you taking those in town?” she asked, unaware that her sister was actually taking them at the Salvatore School. Penny’s next words were enough to have Cassandra rolling her eyes playfully. “I’ve never actually been to the school so I don’t know if I like it yet but I might,” she nodded. Sebastian had told her quite a bit about the place and she couldn’t deny that she was curious. “In case you’ve forgotten, you’re a weirdo too,” Cassandra said, nudging her sister’s arm playfully. “It might not be such a bad idea but it might be a little weird since I’d look older than everyone there,” she shrugged. She was twenty when she died so she was older than the students would be but she knew that it was still perhaps something to think about. PENNY BARTLETT
