━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ EXCLUSIVE. IMMORTALS ONLY. UNDERGROUND.
From the whispers she’d heard, this place was supposed to be kind of spiffy. Mostly vampires, or at least it had been until they loosened the reins on their guest list. Not only was it a place to discover more of Mystic Falls, but there were business opportunities here. Ancient beings usually had their own collections of old-ass stuff, and maybe they’d take a little cash in exchange for ‘contributing to the history of Mystic Falls.’ Or she could just take it off them.
Penny stood in the doorway of Emerald City, remembering the day she’d first seen The Wizard of Oz. She cried at the beauty of it, the history she was witnessing… alone. She wondered if Alice was watching it, too. All Penny had wanted was to share it with her.
Ignoring the brief clog in her throat, Penny trudged forward and into the club, brown eyes darting to each patron. She studied them, trying to determine who looked the oldest or the most wealthy, but even if she found them, they were all occupied. Eventually, her gaze soaked up all this place had to offer, and she was only left with the bar.
A drink, she decided, a drink would help her blend in━not appear like a wallflower or the thief she was.
Penny found an empty stool, grabbing the edge of her silver dress to hike it up before sitting down. “Gimme an old fashioned.” She glanced at the boy, then at his ring. Lapis lazuli. Semi-precious. Not gold, but good enough.
Penny grinned, leaning towards him and into the bar. “Please.” She added, fluttering her lashes for good measure.

Standing behind the bar, resting on the counter behind him, he could feel Hector’s eyes boring into him from afar. Just how his dad would whenever Lawrence was trying to learn a new spell. Hanging off every syllable and yelling if his son muttered something wrong. In the end it was a waste of time. Being taught spells and rituals he was never going to use past the age of 19. Lessons that were then forced upon his younger sister, unbeknown she was bound to follow the same path as her brother, except she made it to the age of 21 before having her magic taken. Hector had barely left the bar over the past few days, keeping a close eye on his employees. Lawrence had grown tired of trying to argue it was just a one off. He had been working at Emerald City long before it turned into the classy bar it presented itself as nowadays. He was here when blood rained from the ceiling and stepping over a body every five minutes was normal. Finally the other vampire left as it was creeping into the early hours of the morning. Lawrence waited until he saw Hector disappear out the door before reaching for a bottle of whiskey from the top shelf. The good stuff. With his eyes trained on the door he hadn’t noticed the female who had appeared at the bar. “Gimme an old fashioned.” His gaze jumped from the door to the stranger, taking him a few seconds to process what she asked for, which followed a ‘please’ and a quick flutter of the eyelashes. “Of course” Lawrence flashed her a warm smile before turning back, with a bottle of whiskey already in his hand he made himself a drink as well. “Do you want to start a tab?” He placed both glasses down, pushing one towards her gently, “I’ll only charge you for our basic whiskey eh” It was his decision to reach for the top shelf liquor, but also a slight ‘fuck you’ at Hector. “Are you new to town or passing though?” She was a new face in the bar. A face he hadn’t seen around Mystic Falls either. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ WHETHER IT WAS THE smile, flirty lash-fluttering or just general man-attracted-to-woman thing, he was nicer than she’d thought he’d be. Vampire men, or immortals in general, tended to get grouchy over the years. Penny didn’t think of herself that way, though she was the perfect example: too many years spent flooding love into people who would leave you or die left the heart empty. It became too much after a while, but she could fake it. Maybe he could, too. Or maybe he wasn’t as old as she thought.
Either way, that was a good thing. If he were younger, he’d be easier to steal from.
“Sure, why not. You’re drinking with me?” Penny grinned, shifting one elbow on the bar to reach out and grab the glass he’d offered up. “Yeah? Gorgeous company and expensive liquor?” Raising her brows, she laughed lightly, “Is it my lucky night?” Penny added before taking a generous sip from her glass.
‘Are you new to town or passing through?’
It probably wasn’t safe to answer honestly. If she’d learned one thing, it was that people were always around the corner waiting to steal her happiness. She’d finally gotten her sister back, and she wouldn’t risk losing her again.
But if she wanted that ring, she had to act at least semi-interested.
“Both.” She grinned, “I don’t think I’ll stay long. It’s… a little too small, but this place seems eye-catching, for lack of a better term.” With a shrug and another sip of her drink, Penny leaned in a little more, slipping her free hand a few inches over the counter and closer to him. “What about you? How long have you been in Mystic Falls?” Glancing over her shoulder, Penny laughed at the thought before it spilled out of her lips, though only after she turned to look at him again. “Or are you like the bartender from The Shining; never leaves, been here since it opened?”

From a human who used to heave at the smell of alcohol to a vampire knocking shots back behind a bar. His life as a vampire was full of firsts, after living a sheltered life for so long with no desire to explore what lay beyond Elk Valley, unlike his sister who was itching to get out from a young age. He never understood her to need to leave where they grew up. They had everything they ever needed, what else could be out there for them? Apart from danger according to their parents. The world was full of darkness and the only place they were safe was with the coven. It took him a while to realize it was all brainwashing bullshit. “Well I can’t let you drink alone, can I?” A smile formed on his lips as he picked her glass up. Gorgeous company. A shy laugh from him and if it was possible his cheeks would have been flushing a fair shade of pink. The last woman he had sitting on the other side of the bar having drinks with was Hannya. “Please tell me you’re not a demon” There was something that told him she wasn’t. For starters, she had a warmer approach and didn’t look dead behind the eyes. Sometimes he’d look at Hannya and it was almost as if there was nothing there. It made him shudder. He mirrored the female, taking a large sip from his glass. He nodded, agreed with her comment. Mystic Falls was small, sometimes a little too small. Everyone knew everyone. “You say that now. Next minute you’re renting a small one bedroom apartment and working in a bar that only caters to the supernatural” The sole reason he came to Mystic Falls was for the Salvatore School, but instead he made a friend for life and was reunited with his presumed dead sister. The vampire took another sip of his drink, resting his upper body on the bar as he swallowed harshly. Soon as the liquor left his mouth he laughed at her comment, “If I’m not on this side of the bar you can usually find me on your side” As she said, it was a small town with little to do. “I’ve been living here a few years, but originally from Canada” The accent wasn’t always a dead giveaway. “What about you? What’s your story” He reached for the bottle, topping up her drink before his own, “I’m Lawrence” Her secured the lid back on the bottle, placing it back down on the bar. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ JUST AS SHE WAS considering what type of woman she had to be for him━for that ring━he hit her with the question that had Penny reeling. Brows furrowed, she found his eyes, an amused smile spreading on her lips where confusion had once been. “Um…” It was safer to pretend she knew nothing. If she didn’t immediately assume he was talking about a demon inhabiting her body as a host and played dumb, she would come across as just that. Knew nothing, had nothing to offer. “That’s a little rude, no? I call you gorgeous, and you ask if I’m evil? Bad experience with past girlfriends... or are you just really awful at flirting?” Penny laughed it off anyway, finding a gentle way to joke with him. She wanted that ring━it was her only goal tonight.
And while she could’ve gagged at his comment about staying here long-term, she reeled it in for that endgame of leaving with his jewellery━and the man’s finger, too, if he couldn’t part with the ring. Penny only laughed and shrugged, taking another sip of her drink. He eased closer, and she glanced at his hand again━was it too obvious? Was she staring too much now?
In an attempt to cover it up, Penny left the glass where it was and let her hand drop to the counter, relaxed, finding his hand with a gentle brush of her fingertips. She smiled at him and truly listened, making little mental notes. Stealing from other supernaturals was more difficult━Finn proved that to her━but he was cold to the touch, and her guesses shifted. Vampire was at the top of the list now.
“Canada, huh? What brought you all the way down here?” Penny tipped her head slightly, still grinning into those pretty, blue eyes. He was gorgeous, and if he wasn’t so gullible, perhaps she would’ve spent a little more time with him. But, if she couldn’t get the ring off in the bar, Penny wouldn’t be disappointed about going home with him. A new trinket and a night spent without that familiar cloud of loneliness wasn’t something to complain about.
‘What about you? What’s your story? I’m Lawrence.’
“Penny. Thank you.” Nodding politely the top up, she used her other hand to pick up the glass for another sip, not losing his eyes for more than a few moments. Her fingers came up slowly where they still played gently with his own, and, by the time her glass was back down, Penny was toying with the band of his ring. “I think you’re gonna have to get me a little more drunk for that.” She laughed, though didn’t stay quiet for long. He had to like her, trust her, if only for the next hour or so.
“I’m from the other side of America,” Lying cooly, like she was born to do it, “I grew up in California back before it was officially a state. I lived most of my adult life in Scotland, though. Came back recently. Ever been anywhere other than here and Canada?” Penny’s cheeks heated with a blush, put on to make him believe he was charming her. He wasn’t bad, she thought, but she’d given up on love a long time ago. She only wished she was in Scotland, with Alice… not with Alice’s husband, though. In Penny’s fantasy, he was long dead or never existed in the first place.
“What sort of events lead you to work in a place like this, huh?” Penny asked, leaning back for a moment, her hand stilling on his. She glanced around the establishment before moving to settle against the bar again. “I bet the hiring process is really interesting.” She joked, tracing over that gemstone, feeling the smooth, edgeless expanse of it.

Relationships had never been his strong point. One forced on him, skipping all the key stages of development. Grace was just a sweet girl from the coven whose parents were keen to have her as the next leader and his parents considered her a good fit out of the other potential young girls in the coven. Lawrence’s input into the whole situation was minimal, his mom assuring him they knew what was best for him. Ultimately it was Rosie who pushed him into avoiding relationships. The way in which he was so infatuated with her he followed her into the darkness was terrifying. The fact someone else was able to control him that deeply put a wedge between him and getting too close to another. That’s why he liked what he and Hannya had, to an extent. Although she still managed to get under his skin exposing his need for human blood.
“Um” Lawrence only laughed when the female did, “Sorry. Classic moment of speaking before I think… there’s a lot of demons in this town and I was just checking if you were one of them” He paused for a moment, before quickly speaking again, “Which is fine if you are… but also fine if you’re not, and...” Was he digging himself further into the hole he’d just dug? However, he was conscious that he was talking a bit too much. “No demon ex-girlfriends and I’m not that bad at flirting” At least he’d never considered himself to be an awful flirt. The rambling apology may have worked as he felt her fingers brush over the edge of his hand, her eyes locked into his. He had been too focused on making their drinks that he had not properly looked at her. Lawrence wanted to throw her compliment back at her. Gorgeous. “Penny...”— Cute name. His hand remained flat on the counter, digits moving slowly as Penny started to play with them. His free hand brought his glass up for a sip. Lawrence was still wary of Penny, but last time he asked a woman what her intentions were he was told vampires were too paranoid. “Well there’s a fully stocked bar behind me” Lawrence took a large mouthful of his drink as he listened to Penny relay her story. “Scotland sounds nice” He commented, or at least the pictures of the internet made it look nice. Some areas remind him of Elk Valley. The ruralness. He smiled shyly as he noticed Penny’s cheeks flush, he glanced down at his drink for a second, before looking back at her. “Spent a number of decades in New Orleans. Visited a few places along the west coast, but I’ve never left North America” The thought of stepping outside the continent was a daunting one. Somewhat sheltered even as a vampire, clinging onto comfort and familiarity. Being a bartender was never a path he intended to choose, but fell into so easily. People hiring tended to ask less questions than those corporate jobs. “It’s not easy getting a job as a vampire” At least in the bar he could be himself, rather than hiding behind the lie that he was human. “When I started here the only requirements were to be immortal and hold yourself in a fight” Back in the days where violence was a common occurrence every night. It was bliss coming into work now knowing the majority of the evening was going to be calm. Another large mouthful of his drink before topping it again, one hand still on the bar playing with Penny’s fingers. The old fashioned was slowly becoming straight whiskey, “If you plan on staying here another week we’re having a Halloween party here and upstairs next Saturday. Unfortunately, fancy dress is compulsory… if you’re free?” He tilted the bottle towards Penny, silently offering another top up. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY GRINNED SLYLY AS he rambled on. This was going to be a lot easier than she originally thought━she was sure of that now. He was sweet, young as hell, and probably a vampire. Clearly not very smart.
Scotland wasn’t nice. It held her heart, though she had to pretend there were still pieces of it left for this sorry sap to scoop up. A beating heart that kept her cheeks warm and pink, a brain that could still access the romantic parts of her brain━enough to have her stomach in knots over his smile. It was a nice smile, after all, but he was just a means to an end.
They talked and talked, and talked. He went on about travelling, Penny flirted by gently suggesting she could show him lots of new places; they spoke about his job, and Penny pretended she thought he was strong for sticking it out; she even agreed to come to the Halloween party. Well, she left it open, a teasing, “Maybe I’ll see you there.” And perhaps she would attend, though Penny would surely be avoiding Lawrence if tonight went the way she wanted.
He continuously filled their glasses with more and more whiskey, and Penny drank as much as he offered. She wouldn’t topple off the chair and throw up everywhere, but the more they drank, the more it excused her actions.
And she got closer and closer with each passing conversation topic. At some point, Penny had raised his hands to rest his knuckles against her lips while he spoke, and she (somewhat) listened. Her teeth grazed his skin when she smiled, and Penny did a lot of that while he went on, offering murmurs in return.
Finally, with a dip in whatever topic they were on now, Penny used the dry moment to add a little excitement. She kissed one of the middle knuckles on the finger that held the ring and kept Lawrence’s gaze while the whole digit slipped past her lips. It was easy to remove━a few swipes of her tongue, and the jewellery slipped free, coming off and into Penny’s possession. She lowered his hand once her mouth was off him, squeezing his palm to keep it occupied while she leaned in, coming in roughly for a kiss that ended up being somewhat gentle. After all, she still had his ring in her mouth, and she couldn’t just start talking again without raising some suspicion over why her speech was suddenly garbled.
“Sorry,” Penny whispered, finding short sentences the easiest to pass off, resting her forehead on his, “Too much?”

Sometimes it was hard to differentiate between the females who were genuinely interested in you or were there for the free or discounted drinks. It was easier to humour them sometimes, having nothing else to do especially when it was creeping into the early hours of the morning. Upstairs, Lawrence did his best not to engage in conversation with customers. Humans leaning over the bar, bellowing their order into his ear as if he couldn’t hear them anyway. It was the same in New Orleans, as he actively avoided anywhere that advertised to the tourists. Although they did make a good meal at the end of the night. Mystic Falls was too small for such behaviour. Downstairs it was easier, knowing the other person belonged in the same world he lived in. Immortal. The conversation was flowing between the pair. She teased that she might attend the Halloween party, even suggesting she could show him new places. The longer they spoke the more it became apparent she was older than him. Considerable older, but it was rude to ask a woman’s age (at least that’s what his mom told him). Penny didn’t even tell him what she was, leaving Lawrence wondering. She wasn’t mortal though, putting away just as much alcohol as he was without so much as a slur. He wouldn’t need to peel her up off the bathroom floor in an hour or two. It kept him guessing even more. Penny appeared to be one of the females who were genuinely interested, but still, it was difficult to trust anyone who walked through those doors into the bar. It didn’t exactly attract good people at times. The two bounced between topics, before falling back on the subject of Mystic Falls. Lawrence wasn’t exactly trying to sell the town, but he was explaining to Penny it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. He quickly skimmed over the fact there was a school nearby for the supernatural, to try and coax her age out of her, but Penny wasn’t bending. Suddenly he became conscious that it was his voice filling the space between them, worried he was talking too much he slowly fell quiet. He watched as Penny glided her tongue over his finger, his eyes locked on hers as she did so. She edged forward towards his face and Lawrence also moved forward a fraction. The gap closed between the two as her lips met his. He broke into a small smile as they parted. He laughed nervously, “Nothing to be sorry about it’s fine” — More than fine. No doubt Hector would have a few words to say if he watched the CCTV back. At least it wasn’t Hannya. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY WAS AMUSED HERE, in this bar, and that was all she could truly ask for. Mystic Falls hadn’t proven itself so far, but at least she’d have trinkets to take with her when they left━she hoped it would be sooner rather than later. Lawrence was amusing, too, though that was about to run out. Penny grabbed his ring, and that was all she’d truly need━she wouldn’t wait all night for his shift to end just to have someone fill the empty spot in her bed. Comfort could be found easier than that and more simply; she was satisfied enough knowing he’d be inconvenienced when he realized what was missing.
Of course it was fine. What kind of man complained about a woman’s interest? She asked anyway, though, and grinned at Lawrence’s response, giving him another gentle kiss, like a reward for his answer. “Good,” She whispered back, slowly and eventually pulling back after a few long moments. Penny turned, pretending to survey the rest of the bar while she inconspicuously spat the ring into her palm. Closing her fingers around it and lowering them to her side, Penny turned back for another sip of her drink.
She managed to placate Lawrence for a while longer, keeping him company for as long as necessary. Once it was slipped into her pocket, his ring became hers, hand freed to begin toying with his again. She promised she’d be back, that she was just going to take a walk around, and did a single loop of the club before disappearing with another crowd out the front door, remorseless and eager to add to her pile of treasure.
