| … Welcome to the first year of college. Not even a college in England like her brother. Instead, one in America. She stood at a fountain on campus trying to figure out exactly where she was. Despite getting a tour she was most certainly living up to her blonde hair and taking ditzy to a whole new level, ” Right… I believe its this way…” Mandy murmured to herself. Pocketing her map, she took off in what she believed to be the right direction.
When she walked far enough and still was no closer, she sighed loudly, realising she was no closer, ” Late on my first bloody day. Just brilliant.” She grumbled to herself. Looking around trying to figure out where she was again, when something caught her eye, ” Oh thank god.” She breathed a sigh of relief when she spotted a coffee cart.
Now this would help. Get a caffeine fix and she would be able to think a little more clearly and find her way at least to her second class. Approaching the cart she smiled, ” Caramel latte please.” She requested and handed over her dollar bills as payment. Taking a seat on the bench nearby while she waited she dug out the map again trying to figure out where the hell she was.

Coffee. The wonderful liquid that kept Kitty awake in the morning and made her a functional person. Without it she was a miserable zombie who didn’t want to be spoken to, but once she had that first sip she was ready to face the world. The coffee cart was draining her bank account day by day. Of course she had coffee back in her dorm, but it was the instant stuff that was almost chewable. It hit the spot on those late nights she was staying up and studying but in the morning she wanted the good stuff. It was overpriced coffee, prices hiked up for college students in need of a fix, willing to pay whatever was needed. But she ignored the expensive price tag. Just how she did with every luxury in her life. Clicking checkout in a heartbeat when a new game was released or tapping away when she spotted a headset she liked in a shop. Moving away from home had given her that independence she craved for so long. She loved her grandmother deeply, but there were times she felt suffocated by her love. The need to wrap the girls in cotton wool, terrified something bad would happen to them, as it had their mother. Kitty needed to move away from Atlanta though. The city only had a handful of woods nearby that she could roam through on a full moon. Whitmore however offered her endless space and a peace of mind that she wouldn’t bring harm to her family. With her latte wedged firmly in her right hand she started to make her way back to her dorm, blowing lightly into the hole in the lid as the liquid warmed the cardboard. She took a few sips, the coffee still scolding hot inside. As she made her way past the benches she spotted another female with a map, wearing a lost expression. “Hey… are you lost?” She spoke as she approached the stranger. MANDY REID

| If there was ever a time when Mandy was living up to the stereotype afforded to her hair colour it was most certainly now. College seemed like a good idea when they first settled in the states. For right now she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do, so right now she was just taking whatever class was of interest while she figured it out. Lord knows she didn’t want to go home and help her father out in the shop for the rest of her life.
Though typically she was late on her first day, at this point she thought she might sod off her first class and at least endeavour to be on time for her second. When the map wasn’t exactly helping, its only saving grace being that it led her to nectar of the gods, most commonly known as coffee. Ordering her coffee and then took one more look at the map, scrunching it up and chucked it in the bin.
Lifting her hand and pushing it through her strawberry blonde hair as she contemplated walking into the nearest building and simply asking for help, when help seemed to find her. Hearing a voice from behind her she turned around and looked at the owner. At her question she simply smiled, ” What gave it away?” Mandy inquired rhetorically, ” The map was only good for leading me to the coffee but despite the tour I had I am still hopelessly lost, yes.” Mandy confirmed.
Hearing the barista from the coffee cart behind her she turned back, paying for her sweet coffee and then turned back to the girl, ” I’m Mandy, and with that I’m really hoping you can help me find English Lit.” Mandy asked trying to sound hopeful, ” Save me from getting a black mark on my first day. “ She laughed as she sipped her coffee sighing a little. Hits the spot.

Moving from a city college to a campus college was a big change. At least for Kitty. Everything she needed was on her doorstep, including the expensive coffee cart, which was very strategically placed. Students needed their coffee, and they were here to provide at inflation, for which the wolf was willing to tap for. Still, at least there weren't clothes shops surrounding her, pulling her in every five minutes to look for a new outfit for an impending night out. Instead, she would have to travel into Mystic Falls for anything substantive. Even then, the shops were lacking. All of them had that small hometown vibe to them, with rails that looked like they hadn’t been updated in months. The same top hung on the same hanger for weeks on end until someone finally caved and bought it. It wasn’t just the shops that she missed about Atlanta. And it was the liveness of the streets. Every night something was happening somewhere. Bars and restaurants were busy from open until close. Like with all major cities, it was a place that never stopped. Even at 3am things were still ticking over. Over in Mystic Falls though, there was just one nightclub and one bar, but it didn’t stop Kitty from having fun. Always the type of person to take everything in her stride, even when she lost her eye. It was just one of those things, and she needed to push on with life. Albeit, she didn’t walk out of the hospital days later with a smile plastered across her face, happy about what happened. There was an adjustment period for her, as she came to terms with the fact she could only see out of one eye. With her cup of coffee in hand, she approached the lost-looking girl, as she was tossing the map in the bin. “I spent weeks getting lost around here. There are so many floors inside so many buildings” She made the mistake of leaving her dorm on her first day 10 minutes before class started. She needed at least 20 minutes to find the building, the floor, and the room. By the time she arrived there 30 minutes had gone by and Kitty lingered outside wondering whether she should brave it and head inside. To be that person who's late. She opted to trawl back to her face and save face. But 12 months had passed now, and Kitty was starting to call Whitmore College her home. Everything was slotting into place nicely, bit by bit. “I’m Kitty!” English lit? A low hum came from her mouth as she pondered, “Gotta be honest I have no idea where English Lit is but…” She dug her hand deep in her jeans pocket, retrieving her phone in an instant. Kitty unlocked her phone, tapped away before tilting the screen towards Mandy, “There is an app you can download that shows you an interactive map of the campus. Was easier to follow than the paper one” She tapped a few more times, “So apparently English Lit is in that building over there” Her right eye lifted from her phone, gazing off into the distance as she pointed towards one of the buildings up ahead, “The one on the left just up there”MANDY REID

| It had been assumed when Mandy finished school at sixteen that she might go to college. She had nothing else planned to do with her life. Starting to see the world slightly differently. Not everyone was like her family. Some supernatural creatures in the world were out for their own personal gain. Exactly like the siren that had taken her brother and ultimately killed her sister. Not her biological sister but Lorna had been that to her. She was grateful to still have her brother, but guilt gnawed in the pit of her stomach. She should have waited, waited for her father who had better command of his magic. Refused to take Lorna to the place that ultimately got her killed.
The change is what bought them here. Everywhere her brother looked, he was painfully reminded of all he had lost. Mandy a for a change of scenery, but also to make sure Darcey was ok… at least 0k as he could be. They all decided to make the stay in America a little more permanent and so Mandy enrolled at the local college in Mystic Falls. But like any new place, she got lost quite easily, even after having a tour.
The only good thing that the paper map had done was led her to the coffee. Which was a life saver for her at the moment. Ordering herself a coffee she took another look at the map. Deciding it wasn’t helping she scrunched it up and put it in the bin. She turned as someone asked if she was lost, ” Not just me then! That’s good.” Mandy said brightly. Taking her coffee and handing over the money from her pocket she tuned back to the girl that opted to stop to help her.
Introducing herself as Mandy, she smiled when the girl returned with her own name: Kitty. It suited her, ” Nice to meet ya, Kitty.” Mandy spoke. Deciding to be a little more cheeky and ask for the help she most definitely needed, she asked where her first class was. When she said that she had no idea her face fell a bit… but held onto that but at the end of the sentence. Moving slightly closer to her so she could see the screen better, ” Huh!” She smiled impressed. When Kitty took it back, she found the building with her class in it without any problem. Mandy followed her hand and then turned back to her, ” You are a life saver. I need that app.” Mandy concluded before pulling out her own iPhone, flicking her gaze back to Kitty’s screen briefly before finding the app on her own phone to download, ” Thank you. What can I do to thank you? Mandy asked her as she waited for the app to finish downloading, ” New coffee? Muffin? “ She offered gesturing to the coffee cart just behind them.

Despite being the youngest she was the first to flee the nest. There was a pang of heavy guilt resting on her shoulders as she left her grandmother behind, but at least her sisters had stayed put. Keeping their grandmother company if anything. It was apparent from a young age Kitty would be the first to leave. She was the one always itching for adventure, keen to explore beyond the city and America one day. For Kitty, Atlanta was somewhat tarnished. It was the place where she was bit and the place where she killed someone. Her grandmother told her to take baby steps instead of jumping on a plane to Spain. Move to Mystic Falls first, see how that worked out then maybe venture further out. Being homesick was something that rarely struck her, possibly because she could be back with her family in no time. The first few days at college were somewhat lonely. Joining the college in her second year was daunting, as most people had already well-established friendship groups from their first year. Even in her classes, people stuck to their own group of people, but Kitty bit the bullet within a few days and started to approach people. Striking up a conversation about anything and everything. For some, they would engage in politeness, but most other students were forthcoming. Especially the ones who had been thrown in the same boat as Kitty. Miles away from home with no connections. “Oh god no. The place is an absolute maze. So many buildings and corridors and… it’s massive” Okay perhaps it wasn’t massive but it was a damn sight bigger than her old college. She took a sip of her coffee as the other girl introduced herself, “You too” She beamed, lowering her cup as Mandy asked for directions. Kitty eagerly showed her the app she had downloaded on her phone. It was an idea that was bouncing around in her head when she started, but someone in her class burst her bubble. Maybe the notion was true. All the good ideas had been taken and she was left trying to build on something someone had already created. Maybe her dream of becoming some famous game developer or someone who creates a really cool app was just a dream. Kitty laughed as Mandy gestured to get her something in return “Nah it’s fine. I need to cut down on the caffeine and muffins. I swear since moving to college my diet has been trash. Those instant noodles are the only thing keeping me alive right now” She had gone from her grandmother’s cooking to eating something that could be made with just water, “You’re from England?” She chuckled quietly, “Sorry you probably get that all the time”MANDY REID

| Well, she had made a friend. It wasn’t so hard after all it seemed. All she had to do was look hopelessly lost. Americans were turning out to be quite helpful…she thought to herself. When she commented that she thought she was the only hopeless blonde at being unable to find her way around this maze, was slightly glad when she said that she had struggled, ” Well that app will really help. Thank you so much for sharing it.” Mandy commented as she found it in the app store and hitting download waiting just a few moments before it popped up on her phone.
Taking a moment to browse and familiarise herself with it, before pocketing her phone, and giving Kitty her attention once again. Calling her a life saver for showing her the app and knew it would come in handy for when she needed to find her way to her next class. At this point she had already missed a lot and didn’t fancy rocking up late. Better to beg for forgiveness than risk humiliation in front of her professor and fellow classmates.
Mandy offered to buy her a new coffee, or muffin as thanks but Kitty told her it was fine. She didn’t look offended, but she did nod reluctantly accepting the refusal, ” Open invite then. An I.O.U.” Mandy smiled accepting the no for now. When she mentioned instant noodles Mandy made a face, ” Yeah girl you need better food.” Mandy joked, ” But that is like typical college life, I think. When do college students really have time to cook?” Mandy asked rhetorically not exactly expecting an answer.
Mandy looked at her when she asked about her being from England, ” What gave that away?” Mandy grinned, ” Yeah. You lasted longer than most before mentioning it though.” Mandy laughed, ” From other girls it’s been all “Ooooh! Your accent is so cute!” “ Mandy imitated the last bit of a girly American telling her that her English accent was cute, ” Anyway… have you ever been?” Mandy asked curiously.

The instant noodles were keeping her ticking by for now. That and the alcohol that was often swirling around in her stomach at the weekend. Her grandmother tried to show her around the kitchen, but it went in one ear and out the other. Her sister’s on the other hand knew a huge range of recipes. Sometimes they’d message Kitty with some ideas, but with so many ingredients and so much time to prep everything. “An I.O.U” She repeated with a short nod. A little surge of happiness inside as the idea of making a new friend. It was scary moving from Atlanta to Mystic Falls, but at least she hadn’t left the country. Being thrown into a whole new town where she knew no one. At least it was only a car journey that lay between her and her family, rather than a long-haul flight. Kitty chuckled at Mandy’s impression of a girly American, “Yeah I can imagine it’s irritating at hell sometimes” Standing out from the crowd was so relatable to her. The first few weeks of college she found everyone turning around to stare at her as she entered the classroom. The girl with one eye. She didn’t mind people staring at her, but rather people just straight up ask her rather than whisper amongst themselves. “Nope… the truth is I’ve never left America” She admitted with a smile and a shrug. “I’d love to go to Europe at some point!” The family wasn’t exactly swimming in money when she was growing up. Secretly when she was younger she hoped her mom would take her to Japan. Show off their roots, but now that job had been delegated to her grandmother, who realistically was getting too old now. Just another one of those things that would be put on her ‘bucket list’, along with other shit like getting a tattoo or jumping out of a plane. MANDY REID - we could wrap up with yours?

| Mandy was so grateful for the help this girl was offering. When she mentioned what she usually lived off. Instant noodles. Just thinking of it made her want to vomit. Being the only other girl in their household she helped her mum out a lot in the kitchen. Helped her dad out in the store. She had to do it all. So that led her to offering the girl a fresh coffee or a muffin… something. As thanks for the help. When she refused, Mandy wasn’t going to let it go so easily. When she repeated the offer of an I.O.U… that gave Mandy enough in order to let it go for now.
Eventually they got into her being English. Mandy was surprised that it wasn’t the first thing she mentioned. If she got a pound- no a dollar here- for how many times she had heard that her accent was cute or adorable, then she would be rich, ” Or sexy. Its ridiculous.” Mandy finished rolling her eyes, ” Out of politeness I pretend it isn’t annoying, but yeah it can get annoying when its constant.” Mandy agreed with her. She didn’t mind them pointing it out provided there was some context. I don’t know asking about the country rather than just pointing out her accest.
Mandy then asked if she had ever been, to England. Until recently Mandy had never left England. This trip was the first time… and was more like a move across the pond. Albeit temporarily. When Darcey headed home, she would have to go with him, ” Definitely try to go. Its worth it. A lot to see.” Mandy told her as she flicked her eyes to the time, ” Crap. I better get going if I don’t want to be late. Thank you so much again, see you around Kitty!” Mandy told her waving wiggling her fingers in goodbye as she took a few steps backward before turning completely into the direction Kitty had pointed her in. Fingers crossed that she wouldn’t get lost again.
