| In her room on campus, Lydia was unpacking. Ensuring she had everything that she needed for the school year ahead. It was quite rare that she had to study, everything she read, everything she heard she remembered. With a new semester starting she knew she would have to go and get some new books for her new classes. Arranging the ones she had, separating the ones she no longer needed and would need to return.
When she was completely unpacked and settled, she bagged off the books to be returned, and set out toward the college library. Arriving minutes later, comfortable silence filling the room. Typical library, silence to be expected. Her heels as she walked created noise, the tapping off the tiled floor and echoing through the vast space.
Placing her books at the counter to return them she took off further into the library, scanning the shelves for the locations of the books that she needed. Passing by an aisle she caught sight of a blonde girl, trying to reach a book on the higher shelves. Deciding in a split second to help the poor girl. Using the height her heels afforded her she smiled to the girl and reached up easier and grabbed the book she had been looking for.
As she slipped the book into her hands, she noticed the title. Mystic Falls was a unique town, much like Beacon Hills had been. There was even a class at Whitmore for Occult and Paranormal studies. She gave the girl a curious look and then handed her the book about supernatural creatures over to her, ” Here you go.” Lydia offered her the book, ” Curious subject….” Lydia prompted wondering just how much this girl knew, ” Light reading?”

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ MAYBE RUNNING AWAY WASN’T such a bad choice after all. She had her brother, River, here and now Kitty━and, of course, Mal. Ooh boy did he ever give her butterflies, stomach swirling with excitement every time she thought of him (which was a lot). And she’d finally decided to go to college, too! And she had a roommate before she’d even moved in. Kitty was pretty awesome, and Krista thought they could be super-duper good friends. Well, she hoped so. She kinda already considered them best friends, but Krista knew she liked to jump the gun a lot. Sometimes it scared people off, though she really hoped Kitty wasn’t one of those people.
Her major was still undecided, but she was here. And she’d even had a phone call with her parents. It was kind of irritating, what with their concerned voices radiating down the line at her, peppering Krista with all the attention she didn’t want. Yes, she was okay. Yes, she was staying. And… yes, she was sorry for scaring them. That admission came with a sour sting in her throat, but at least it was out there now, and it made them feel better.
Krista felt better, too. Her bites from Mal were healing under her clothes, and it left her feeling… satisfied. Missing him, obviously, but still excited that she had these sorts of chances. And she didn’t want to pester him with questions, so the library seemed like a good option. Plus, it quelled the constant buzz in her mind surrounding him, as if she could feed into her growing addiction with a few thick books.
She saw one. The History of Vampires (and Other Supernatural Folklore), right there on the shelf, just a few inches higher than her hand. Krista grabbed hold of the edge of one to steady herself, on the tips of her toes and stretching, desperate to get it. Mal would probably be able to reach this, she thought, and then she was imagining him swooping in behind her, asking what she was looking for with that accent, probably pinning her against the bookshelf. Focus pushed in again, hazel eyes narrowed at that book until━holyshitholyshitholyshit...
She turned with wide eyes, but it wasn’t Mal at all. Krista tried not to let her expression fall so obviously, replacing it with a sweet grin as fast as she could. “Thank you,” Beaming, one hand reached out to take the book, laughing sheepishly. “Uh… yeah. Just, um, personal interest, I guess.” Her eyes skimmed the title again, lingering on the word vampire and thinking of her goal here. To learn more. Was this girl one of them? Was she a vampire? Something else?
“Do you… know anything about this stuff?” Krista asked, doing an awful job at prodding, but still hoping she could find out something. Gosh, could vampires sense each other? If they could, then Krista was out of luck. There was no way she’d convince this girl she was one of them.

| Collecting books for another year of college. Now she was expected to make a specialisation. Something she wanted to do with her life. For her high school life, she had been a secret genius. She could literally go on to do anything that she wanted. Yet she found herself pausing over what to do. Always so easy for her boyfriend. He knew where he wanted to go and what he wanted to do. Yet with all her brilliance, she was stuck.
Browsing the aisles of books deciding to do a good deed for the day. She found herself walking down an aisle toward a smaller blonde girl that was reaching for a book just slightly out of reach. Lydia probably wasn’t much taller, but she was wearing heels at the moment which gave her the boost in height that she needed. Grabbing the book for her and pulled it down off the shelf.
She was quick to catch the title and found it a little strange. Though there was a scary amount of interest in the occult, and Lydia certainly wasn’t one to judge. Especially when she knew that vampires were most definitely real, ” You’re welcome. That’s my good deed done for the day. Relatively early too.” Lydia told her with a small smile.
She politely tried to inquire as to the topic as she handed the book over. She wanted to blurt out insanity and be like ‘well you know they aren’t real right?’ then who would be the liar. When she asked if she knew anything about this stuff, Lydia could of rattled on for days about what she knew and what she had seen, but this girl might then have her committed, ” Well a little. Curious subject, so much lore and fiction.” Lydia shrugged her shoulders as though trying to play it down to only that: fiction.

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ JUST ONE GOOD DEED? Krista wasn’t a detective, didn’t have the brain for it, probably━not that she was stupid, she just didn’t think of facts the way they could━but she came to the conclusion pretty quickly that this girl wasn’t a Christian (well, who was in college?). From the way Krista grew up, she knew she had to do a plethora of good deeds each day to make it into Heaven at the end of it all, and… getting used like a vampire’s personal blood supply probably didn’t help her case. Or did it? She was helping him, after all.
No, no. Focus. Pretty girl and maybe a potential new friend… or somebody who knew about vampires. Just for good measure, Krista shifted a bit as she took the book, trying to subtly show off the two little bite marks on her neck. If she knew anything, she’d probably say something. Hopefully. Mal did.
“Uh-huh. Fiction.” Krista spoke under her breath, peeling open the over and flipping quickly through the pages. She grimaced at a drawing she stopped at, a full page of some black and white charcoal piece that looked like it was straight from somebody’s nightmare. A vampire━definitely not as cute as Mal━with twisted features, giant fangs, shadowy eyes and… well, plain scary all around. Krista frowned, almost offended by it. That didn’t look like any freakin’ vampire she’d ever seen.
“You gotta admit, though, it is kinda cool.” Hazel eyes flicked back up to the girl’s, another bright smile chasing away her frown. “Like… if it was real, it would be scary. And they’ve gotta come from somewhere, right? Or are you just a total non-believer?” She laughed somewhat sheepishly and turned the book in her hands to show her potential new friend. “I don’t think that thing exists, I feel like we’d be able to pick ‘em out if they did look like this. But people really got up in arms about it. I guess they’re sorta like Biblical-level antagonists. People back then probably didn’t know how to explain things, so they used ‘vampires’ and ‘witches’ as replacements for the stuff they didn’t understand… and then maybe it snowballed into this.” Krista shrugged, slowly leaning back again.
She realized she was being scary again, and not in her regular Krista way, but something else entirely. Great. Just another thing to have people start hating her. “Sorry, I probably sound really weird. I just think it’s cool. I’m Krista, by the way.” She beamed, hoping she hadn’t lost her chance already.

| Some of the books in this library could be used to find the truth. If you knew where to look for it… but the best source you could get your hands on wasn’t exactly published. It was the Argent’s bestiary. Even then it wasn’t complete, they had encountered somethings that weren’t included in the endless compendium of information.
Some humans went about their day blissfully unaware of what really was in the world around them. Lydia certainly wasn’t going to burst this sweet girls blissful bubble. Lydia caught what she said under her breath but chose to ignore it. What else could she say? Krista flipped open the book and seemed to pause at the images.
Lydia began to look for what she needed and then she heard her pipe up again and she turned back. Smiling kindly, ” Yeah I suppose.” Lydia thought for a moment. When she asked if they were real where do you think they came from. ” Where do you think they would come from?” Lydia asked back, operating under a theory that vampires were real. Though she knew from very recent experience they were real… and they could be extremely dangerous, ” If they are real, I think they could be really dangerous….” Lydia started and then laughed a little at the picture she was shown, ” And If that is real, I’m never leaving the house at night again.” Lydia laughed.
Lydia listened to what she had to say and thought about it, ” That’s one theory. Though do you know much about this town?” Lydia asked her. Wondering if she knew the history of Mystic Falls. How it allegedly eradicated vampires… of course that wasn’t exactly public knowledge. In public record it was probably recorded as a witch hunt, ” After a dig around I learned back in the 1800’s this town allegedly eradicated vampires, trapped and killed them in a church fire.” Lydia told her as she scanned titles for her own book.
When she got her own book for her own classes, she reached for it and cradled it in her arm, ” Not weird at all. As you said its interesting.” Lydia shrugged. Smiling back at her, ” Nice to meet you, I’m Lydia.” She offered her name back in return, ” You checking that book out then?” She asked her gesturing to it.

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ ‘If they are real, I think they could be really dangerous….’
KRISTA WAS OFFENDED FOR MAL. Maybe the rest of the vampire kind too, but her focus really only had one target. Sure, this girl was right; he was probably super-duper dangerous but, like… so what? He hadn’t hurt her… other than sending her home with her neck oozing blood. She could’ve been seriously messed up by that.
“I dunno, probably. Maybe. As for where they’d come from… well, they can probably only get made by other vampires, right? But their origin? I dunno.” She’d have to ask Mal. Krista had no desire to become one; she quite liked being his personal (and only) supply, but it was just another thing she felt priveleged to learn about him.
Laughing and agreeing with her sentiment about the look of the scary book vampire, Krista’s big eyes peered curiously up at the girl who she’d deem her new friend already━whether she liked it or not. “No,” She admitted, “I grew up a few towns over, but I don’t really know much about the history here.”
‘After a dig around, I learned back in the 1800s this town allegedly eradicated vampires, trapped and killed them in a church fire.’
Gasping quietly, Krista threw a hand over her mouth, eyes welling with tears. How could they? That wasn’t fair at all━she could only think of Mal getting trapped in something like that, and… no, it was too awful to think about. “Well… well, that’s just horrible.” Lifting her hand from her mouth, Krista rubbed at her near-dry eyes, then used it to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear. “‘Cause they were probably just regular people, right? And they thought they were vampires.” She saved herself quickly, “It’s awful.” She wanted to run to Mal and give him a big hug.
“Lydia?” She brightened considerably. Okay, trading names was definitely a path to friendship. “That’s such a pretty name! It’s nice to meet you, too,” Closing her book and lifting it, Krista admired the cover before her gaze met Lydia’s again. “Yeah, I think I will. Thank you for grabbing it for me!” Voice chiming happily, Krista started moving towards the end of the aisle. “I hope I see you around! Ooh, do you wanna study together sometime? That would be cool━and I don’t have to only talk to you about vampires.” Krista giggled, pulling free the little pay-as-you-go phone River gave her to keep in touch.

| Talking to this girl about hypothetical vampires, was a conversation Lydia found quite bizarre. She had a run in with a vampire and knew they weren’t all romanticised like they were in books like the Anne Rice novels or Twilight. Then again, she did know of some who blended in, and came across as perfectly normal people. Another layer of danger if they were ever to turn on you, Lydia mused, ” Right. I don’t know about that either, just more for you to research.” Lydia lied. Coming here had opened her eyes to exactly just what was in this world… and she had plenty of time to do her own research.
After finding her own book she lowered it into her arms and asked her if she was from this town, if she knew any of the town history. Lydia went on to tell her about the alleged town history. How they eradicated vampires in the 1800’s, ” Yeah it was horrible. Pretty much like the Salem witch trials. A lot of people lost there too.” Lydia mused, ” Something they can’t explain gets a label. Witch or vampire seems to work.” Lydia commented, ” And makes for an interesting read.” Lydia finished.
Introducing themselves Lydia smiled a little when she complimented her name, ” Thanks I guess.” Lydia told her She had never really given her name much thought. Asking her if she was checking out the book Lydia smiled and nodded. She was about to move away to grab her last book when Krista chirped up again, offering to study together some time, ” Sure. No problem.” Lydia agreed and noticed the phone that she pulled free. Typing in her number into Krista’s phone, quickly pressing the call button and seconds later her own phone buzzed in her purse, ” I’ll see you around.” Lydia smiled as she rounded a corner into another aisle continuing the search for her books.
