Slinging his bag over his shoulder, Rhys climbed out of his clapped out VW bug. It had been his mom’s, already worn down around the edges by the time he got his license at 16. Over the four years he’d had it the thing had been patched up, its front doors now a completely different colour to the rest but he’d held onto it. Babying it until it at least ran well enough to get him back and forth to Whitmore without breaking down on the side of the road. He guessed his mom would’ve appreciated it, holding onto a past most saw as cheesy or outdated, keeping the nostalgia going. It was what had driven her to start up her store after all.
That melding of the geek and the antique a metaphor for his parents, blended together in him in a way. The best way, according to his dad when the nostalgia struck him and he could hear his voice going hoarse with the admission.
Rhys raked his teeth over his lip, locked the car and headed towards the administration building near the front gates of the school. He couldn’t remember enough about his mom to be able to tell if he really did or if people just wanted to see it. All he’d seen was the same dark eyes and hair looking back at him in the photos that hung around the house. He felt her in a way in the store he guessed. Gripping the figures she painted in his hand or beating one of her high scores still posted on the boards at the back of the store, bringing some solidity to that connection.
She’d been here too. Like his dad, the two of them growing up in Mystic Falls and heading to the closest college, falling in love between the campus and the comic book store. Another tie he had back to them, minus the falling in love. ”All the time in the world for that,” he reminded himself. School first, then the store full time, doing what his mom would’ve wanted. Watching out for his dad as long as he needed him, everything else was gonna come in time. That was just the way the universe was and no amount of wishful thinking and elbow grease was really gonna change that.
He supposed in a way it was the universe that had plucked his name out of the hat, and not Mrs. Craig, to play tour guide when he’d walked into the admin building with an order that had come into the store for one of the admin assistants the week before. Mrs. Craig had been smug about it though, giving his arm a fond pat that had him looking warily at her at first. ”A transfer student, I figured a good boy like you wouldn’t mind showing her around.” How could he refuse after that? He sighed, smiled at the elderly woman and caved.
Most students at the school hadn’t grown up in town but most at least started at 18, jumping in at the deep end. It wasn’t entirely unheard of for one to start later but they were thin enough on the ground that he supposed the school wanted to give them the special treatment to keep them from transferring back out.
Spotting a willowy strawberry blonde where he was supposed to meet their newest arrival. Just days before class started and she was gonna be thrown it beyond the deep end. Rhys tilted his head, raised his hand in greeting as he approached. ”Amanda? Rhys.” He touched his hand to his chest before he offered it to her. ”Mrs. Craig said she’d let you know I was gonna be your tour guide. I hope she kept her word. New to town huh?” Whitmore wasn’t the smallest school in the world but there were few you didn’t get to know by sight at least, same with Mystic Falls. They really were a small world.

| It had been decided that for at least the foreseeable future the Reid siblings had decided to stay in Mystic Falls. For both Darcey and Mandy, home held too many bad memories. So, they could both use a fresh start, a change of scenery. As to not waste her time, she decided to enrol in the local college. Making the family proud to be the second sibling to attend college. She wasn’t like Nicky as he was an academic genius. But she wanted to make something of herself and not be stuck in a dusty old shop in the middle of London.
Still, she wasn’t entirely certain on what she wanted to do, and so she was taking a few easy classes until she knew what she wanted to do. Arriving at the campus at the registration office and got her schedule, ” I’ve arranged a tour for you with one of our upper-class men. If you want to wait outside, he will be here soon.” The lady told her. Mandy smiled at her, ” Thank you.” Mandy thanked her before taking her welcome pack and went to stand outside as instructed.
While she waited, she took a seat on a nearby bench and had a read through the welcome pack, glancing over the campus map. She wasn’t staying on campus so didn’t bother looking over the dorms. When she heard her name from behind her she raised her head and looked behind her at the man coming toward her. She gave him a bright smile and stood from her bench, ” ‘Ello.” She greeted her British accent coming through, ” Yeah she did let me know. I wasn’t waiting long.” Mandy told him as she slipped her welcome pack in her bag and adjusted the strap on her shoulder.
When he asked if she was new to town, she chuckled a little, ” Not just to town.” She pointed out the obvious as this was her first time in America, ” Visiting a brother, and decided to extend the stay indefinitely.” She explained, keeping to the short version of events, ” Nice to meet you Rhys. You can call me Mandy if you want… most people do.” She shrugged her shoulders leaving it up to him.

First time he’d been through the campus – that he could remember at least – it had been with him bracketed by his parents. The sun a bright ball in the sky overhead, so bright he could barely look up at it through the spaces in the trees they walked under. Dangling every now and then from their hands, swung through the air. Probably just a month or two before his mom had died. The nostalgia for it lingered now, no question about where he was gonna go to college, even if his dad was in a fit state to be left. Whitmore. Another McEvoy graduating, with honours if Rhys had anything to say about it. It might just have been leading to decades running the store but in a world where so many were rushing to get out of places like Mystic Falls. Stars in their eyes, set on some city somewhere to escape everything they’d known. Not him.
Rhys wondered if that was why he’d been singled out to give Amanda a personal tour of the campus. A new student dumped in at the deep end, better not to scare her off with one of the frat boys or even the cheerleader types who’d left him gawking as a teenager. The dipping in of a toe instead of that fast, cold shock of leaping in. He couldn’t get too frustrated about the image of him Mrs. Craig obviously had. He was a good kid.
Arriving on time because of it, he’d left the Blue Beetle nearby. Strolling over to the admin building just ahead of time. A congenial smile on his face, his hand tapping his chest with his introduction before he extended it to her to shake. Amanda was already getting to her feet, offering up a greeting of her own … in an accent he hadn’t expected. English? Rhys squinted slightly at it, offering up a wider grin. He’d seen enough episodes of Doctor Who with his dad to know. ”She’s definitely the organised sort. She tapped me for this a week ago.” And he’d set reminders on his phone, circled it on the paper calendar that still dangled on their kitchen wall. A schedule for his dad that he barely took notice of when he drifted down from his garret in search of coffee, or far less often than he should’ve done, lunch.
Making a low sound in his throat at her answer to his question, Rhys gestured towards her slightly before wrapping both hands around the straps of his bag. He’d never been the world’s best with accents but when you’d grown up on sci-fi or fantasy English was one of the few that cut through. ”England right? I’ve gotta admit, most of my English experience comes from the shows you guys probably won’t even watch.” Most tended to avoid what reflected their every day. Who wanted to see it on a screen if they could just throw open a window and get it anyway. Rhys bobbed his head slowly, glancing in the direction Mystic Falls lay. ”So you’ve got family in town. It helps. I’m the same, although, definitely not new to town. I grew up in Mystic Falls.” And wasn’t planning on leaving.
Rhys’ hands slowly slipped down the straps of his bag, dangling at the bottom of the straps for a moment before he slipped them into his pockets. Knowing that she was family oriented already had him warming to her. The shortening of her name only increased it, no formality, he could totally get on board with that. ”You too, Mandy.” One corner of his mouth kicking up, he pulled a hand free and gestured around them. ”We can take a walk around if you’re ready. The campus isn’t huge but it gets a little confusing if you’re not used to it. You staying in the dorms or in town?” If it wasn’t for the shop he might’ve stayed in the dorms but between his evenings there and his dad, there was no way he could spend that much time away, even if the commute did take a shark bite out of each day.

| Since having agreed to stay in America indefinitely, she wasn’t going to just sit at home. Instead, she decided to enrol at the local college. She was late at starting the semester, so would have some serious catch up when her classes eventually started. In order to help her out, a tour was arranged for her and she was sat outside waiting for her tour guide to show up.
She hadn’t been waiting long when she heard someone approach using her full name. She managed not to wince. Her family only used Amanda when she was in trouble. When Rhys asked if she was new to town she shook her head, her accent a dead give away and asked if she was from England, ” Yup. Accent. Dead giveaway.” Mandy laughed a bit. When he mentioned watching tv shows she smiled, ” Let me guess. Doctor Who? That’s usually the go to.” Mandy inquired with almost confident curiosity, ” I’ve seen a few episodes but not all of them… and typically David Tennant is by far my best doctor.” Mandy continued rambling, ” Sorry feel free to tell me to shut up.” She added moments later when she realised.
She went onto elaborate what bought her across the pond saying that she was visiting her brother and they had decided to extend their stay indefinitely, ” Two brothers. One has lived in America for years, and well my first-time leaving England. We were definitely ‘go to the seaside’ for holidays type of family, if we went on holiday at all.” Mandy elaborated just slightly. The reason why they were here was all to do with healing, so it was definitely helping seeing her brother that wasn’t directly involved in what happened.
When he eventually gave her his name, she told him to call her Mandy. Grabbing her own bag when he suggested they should start the tour, ” Right yeah. I’m ready.” She smiled slinging her shoulder bag strap over her shoulder letting it hang down by her side, ” Still thanks for doing this. Even with the tour I’ll probably still get lost, I definitely live up to being a blonde when it comes to directions.” She admitted honestly, ” I’m hoping to get in the dorms, still waiting to hear back about availability. I’m a teenager living with my two ancient brothers… cramping my style.” She joked just a little. Though she knew she would be afforded slightly more freedom if she chose to live in the dorms.

He might not’ve had the grand European holidays some of the kids from the Founding Families had when he was growing up. A week at the beach if he was incredibly lucky but most times the furthest he’d get with his dad was a couple of days in one of the cities closest to them as he’d gone to meet with printers or had gone to do signings and things at comic book stores. Usually there were little side jaunts on the way home to flea markets or tiny junk stores that were like an Aladdin’s cave to a ten year old. Rhys had never been ashamed of it, sure, there was a big wide world out there, but he wasn’t about to rush and try to see it on their shoestring budget just because he knew exactly how short time could be. If his whole life was spent in Mystic Falls that wasn’t gonna be a bad thing.
He wasn’t ashamed of being a geek either but he did give a wincing grin, rubbing at the back of his neck as Mandy totally called him on the show. Now, he wasn’t one of those guys who only watched the Doctor and thought it was the be all and end all of British culture. ”Partly,” Rhys admitted. He tilted his head, narrowed his eyes for a moment. ”Red Dwarf too, Being Human, Black Mirror. My dad’s kind of a comic book, sci-fi geek so I picked up on it all.” His grin curled further as she didn’t groan over it. Reaching out a hand, Rhys nudged her arm. ”You’re good,” he promised. ”Not gonna correct you either, he’s kinda my favourite too.” He’d watched the whole lot though. It had been one of the things that would drag his dad out of his funk and away from his desk for a while. The two of them sprawled on the couch with popcorn or pizza, hollering at the screen.
Family it seemed was Mandy’s draw to the town too, although it wasn’t her parents. Siblings had always been something he’d wondered about but after what had happened to his mom it had seemed like his dad had never reached the point of wanting to move on. Love was like that, he guessed, when you met that person there never would be another the same. Rhys chuckled, looking back at Mandy from the horizon. ”I get that. I’ve never been out of America, so I can imagine it was a big deal.” The echoes were still there between his family and hers, despite the geography and the different family spread. ”We’d do the beach thing too, me and my dad.” He’d been too young to remember the one trip they’d taken there with his mom, so little of the time he’d had with her had stuck, in the way early childhood memories always floated away, no matter how hard you wanted to believe you could hold on to them.
At a strolling pace Rhys started down one of the paths, the one that would lead them past most of the teaching buildings and the dorms. The layout of the place was imprinted deep on his brain by now. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans as they strolled. ”No problem. Any time you get lost, just give me a bell. I probably know the place like the back of my hand by now.” He mock grimaced as he gestured over at the dorm blocks that spread down one side of the campus. ”You’ll probably end up in one of those if they’ve got room at this time of the year. I live at home with my dad … I guess it’s less cringey when it’s a guy living with his dad than a college girl with her brothers. Are they that bad?” From the way she’d said it he guessed not but still it had to be hard when you wanted that college experience and had two men looming over you. Like a double dose of parenting he guessed.

| Getting to the whole she was English thing, and this was her first time crossing the pond, easy way to break the ice as far as she was concerned. When he mentioned about watching the English TV that English people themselves probably didn’t watch. She laughed a bit and took a stab in the dark at Doctor Who. Smiling a little when he agreed and went on to name a few others she had heard of, ” Not a bad list.” She commended nodding her head. When she realised, she started to ramble she smiled when he said that she was good, ” Well he is kind of everyone’s favourite. If my brothers had a doctor, it would probably be that Baker dude, since they are that old.” Mandy joked. She liked poking fun at her brothers age considering there was over a decade between her and Nicky.
Yes, they had flew over here to see Nicky. The news they had wasn’t news that could be shared over a phone. Darcey was more than capable of travelling on his own, but Mandy was worried for him. Hell she worried for him in England she didn’t’ want to worried about him with an ocean to separate them, ” All been good fun so far…” She smiled nodding at the same time. It had been a big deal for them to choose to stay. Now all she was worried about were her parents, running the store on their own. It had been many years since they had done everything on their own, ” I can’t remember the last time we went to the beach… “ Mandy mused. Probably when she was a kid, they weren’t exactly super rich, and could afford the holidays every year. Then the older they got the more expensive they became.
Picking up her bag she slung it over her shoulder as she started to follow him down one of the many paths. They were going at a slow pace which Mandy took as a good sign indicating that he wasn’t eager to just get this over and done with. She warned him that despite the tour she might still get lost. Directions not being a strong suit, ” I’ll keep that in mind. I’ll definitely need it.” She laughed not having any confidence in herself. He asked if she was living on campus, and she replied that she was waiting to hear back about the availability. She did want to live at the dorms, get the true college experience, ” Nah. They aren’t that bad. They definitely could if they wanted to be. No in truth I just want the full college experience.” Mandy told him laughing a little. They could definitely be over protective and overbearing but she was their sister and gave as good as she got half the time and wasn’t afraid to call them out if the moment called for it.

Geek wasn’t always a dirty word. Sure, if he’d gone out for some of the fraternities on campus, it might’ve been, but it had been a long time before Rhys had felt awkward about who he was. You took joy in what made you happy and if – sometimes it was a super rare if – someone else got a little happy about it too, then you babbled at them relentlessly. If they didn’t, then you smiled and you moved on. His dad said he got that from his mom but he knew both of his parents had been people entirely at ease with their way of life. Grounded in that he wasn’t about to fly out of town the minute he graduated. He’d grow old here, be the bearded old dude running the kooky little shop on the square, lighting up like a little kid when someone came in to indulge in that sea of nostalgia. Everyone had a touch of it – geek or not.
He definitely wouldn’t have pegged Mandy for one but he was giving her credit for it as she grinned over his list – a short one compared to the stack of DVDs teetering next to the TV in the living room. Rhys held a finger up, chuckling. ”It’s a great list.” None of those shows could incite discussions like Doctor Who though. Toss the question of who your favourite doctor was out into a room of fans and it would be carnage. He tucked his hands into his pockets, brows rising as Mandy tossed her brothers into the mix again. She was making it sound a little like they were ancient, probably at least his dad’s age. ”That big an age gap, huh? Or do they just act like they’re ready for walking sticks and giant tufts of ear hair?” It was probably none of his business. Family situations were tangled, no matter who you were. They could’ve been half brothers, step brothers. Not everybody was like his parents – one and done in a lot of ways, death not enough to carve his dad away from the woman he’d loved and free him to move on. If he had maybe he wouldn’t have been here at Whitmore now.
Mandy definitely hadn’t stayed close to him it seemed. Following her brother across the world. It was a huge jump but she didn’t seem to be having any real trouble settling in. Maybe the home sickness would kick in later, it would’ve done for him instantly. His dad was always home for him but Mystic Falls had always been a tether too, some part of him looking forward to the drive back from wherever they’d been. Rhys’ smile shot through with empathy. He shrugged slightly, tipping his head in the rough direction of the coast, if you were willing to drive for a few hours. ”You should go some time. We can’t offer that up around here but if you want to swim somewhere that’s not a pool there’s always the great outdoors … when it’s warmer outside. Can’t emphasise enough that it’s a bad idea in the winter.” Mock shivering, he pulled his hands from his pockets, wrapped his arms around himself like that remembered chill was back.
He relaxed as they started to stroll away from the admin building. Shoulders easing beneath the cover of his shirt as they started to stroll. The tour could take all day if he drew it out but he imagined Mandy was gonna be happy with the highlights and being able to find her way to her classes without turning up an hour late cause she went right at Whitmore House instead of left. ”Not after this tour, you won’t,” Rhys promised with the wink of one brown eye, returning her laugh with a grin. ”I get it.” The smile became a wince as he shook his head. ”I don’t, actually. I was kinda happy I got to stay at home and watch out for my dad. I’m guessing your brothers don’t need looking after, at least not as much as you want that college experience.” Most grown men would say they wouldn’t but his dad wasn’t most.
Feeling the little ache at that in the pit of his stomach, Rhys tugged a hand out of his pocket and gestured towards the red brick building off to the right. Any electives he got he put towards credits at least tied in some way to business or to the stuff he’d gotten hooked on thanks to the store – ancient history, mythology, next semester occult studies, although that left a pit opening up in his stomach. ”That’s the science building. You’ll probably have some lab stuff on your timetable somewhere. What classes have you got down for this semester?” He wiggled his fingers at her like he was coaxing her to pull out her timetable.

❝ Somewhere Over The Rainbow... Skies Are Blue❞
Mandy was trying to at least make a friend out of this guy. Making friends with her tour guide would hopefully at least prove useful in the future. She wouldn’t sit down to religiously watch Doctor Who, though as far as English tv shows went it was certainly one of the better ones. Mandy commended him on his list saying it wasn’t bad when he held up a finger and stopped her. She laughed at his words and nodded, ” Ok… it’s a great list.” Mandy concurred.
They talked a little more about the show and she went on to say her favourite doctor naturally was the tenth one. She then went on to say it was likely her brothers’ favourite was the Baker dude. They probably weren’t old enough for his era, but she was just making digs at the age gap that was between them, ” It’s a huge age gap. There is a solid sixteen years between me and the youngest brother, so you can only imagine the gap between me and the oldest.” She told him, ” Darcey probably is ready for a walking stick, might stop him from breaking his hip.” She grinned again. Oh, if they could hear her now, they would quickly bring her down a peg or two. She loved them all the same, the old man jokes came from a place of love.
She went on to say that she had never travelled outside of England. The most her family had taken were trips to the beach. There wasn’t a beach near here, that much she knew. When he mentioned about swimming in the great outdoors she tried and failed to hold back a laugh, ” Was that an unfortunate experience of yours?” Mandy asked failing to find the humour she felt at the situation.
She was grateful for the tour because she was useless when it came to her sense of direction. Even after this tour, chances are she would still get lost, ” No my brothers don’t need looking after.” Mandy confirmed. If she were to stay with them, the smothering would never end. Another reason for staying in the dorms. Nicky wasn’t really happy about her deciding to live on campus, and she promised that she would visit frequently. In addition to working in his store. She was here to see him as well after all.
As they walked along through the campus he was gesturing to various buildings, specifically the science building, ” I seriously hope not. I was hopeless in science in England. I’d have to have a seriously good lab partner…” Mandy smiled. She wasn’t dumb enough to confuse the acid with water, she wasn’t that thick. But she didn’t enjoy science. She had been better at English and history. English history had been a breeze, ” American history, I was quite good at English so American hopefully shouldn’t be so hard. Then a few English classes, I enjoy writing and stuff so.” Mandy shrugged and then asked, ” What classes do you have?”

Maybe he got just a hair smug when Mandy agreed with him. He would’ve pulled it together on his own anyway, from those nights him and his dad had sat on the couch after dinner, hollering at the TV in their shared appreciation of the shows, but those watch nights at the store had reinforced some of those picks. There was absolutely nothing like getting a whole room of fans together, feeling the energy build even with things they’d probably binge watched a dozen times over. Rhys slanted a grin at Mandy over it, dropping the finger he’d been holding up. ”Thank you,” he said like somehow he’d been vindicated. She could probably do without that added reminder of home, but maybe he’d tell her about the store after and encourage her to stop by next time they had a watch night.
Her brothers could come by too, if they weren’t going to spend the entire time giving him the stink eye for getting within a dozen feet of their little sister. From what Mandy was saying as they walked, it was all too easy to picture them with those sticks, eyes – probably as blue as their sister’s – flashing as they went shaking them at people. Yikes. Rhys grimaced good naturedly as he started to do the math. He wasn’t about to ask if she’d been a surprise baby, that was way beyond his business, but most didn’t go having another kid when their eldest had probably already left home. ”I guess he's practically a second dad instead of a brother,” he observed. Laughter cracked out before Rhys mouthed a ‘wow’. ”I bet he’d love hearing that too.” Probably about as much as he’d love the idea of his little sister being in college to start with.
Back at home it might’ve been different, although most of the differences that he’d seen on TV had been the minor kind. College or university, they had to boil down to the same thing in the end. Wild times for most, getting yourself into the sort of trouble that was all forgotten by the time you graduated – not that he’d ever gotten into much of that. Rhys’ brows hitched, innocence filling his dark eyes as he squeezed his arms tighter over his chest. ”The hypothermia? Oh, absolutely. You know, they always swore that those polar bear swims were worth it … total lie.” He was shaking his head though, his laughter rolling out as he dropped his arms away from his chest. Nope, he’d never been crazy enough to try out the Falls when there was snow on the ground.
The sensible head on his shoulders was one less thing for his dad to worry about. There was no guarantee Mandy would ever say the same about her family, although she’d definitely know best that way. Rhys narrowed his eyes, glancing over at Mandy almost conspiratorially. He dipped his head towards her, dropping his voice so people passing almost wouldn’t hear them. ”But you do it anyway?” A question that was probably none of his business, but he had a gut feeling that Mandy was close enough to her family to do just that, even with that age gap. That concern didn’t cross the line into giving up the dorm part of her college experience though.
That would be on the list for later in the tour, if Mandy hadn’t already moved in there before she’d turned up today. The science building first, then the humanities blocks that stretched through one of the older parts of the campus. The cafeteria, the sports fields, the coffee truck that parked up in the quad every day (thank God!). Rhys hummed lightly, giving her another conspiratorial look before he glanced around over his shoulder. ”If you do, maybe I can pull some strings, get you someone who’s acing class to turn that hopeless into an A.” He’d always been pretty decent at science but the focus since he’d arrived at Whitmore two and a half years ago had always been business. You didn’t need to know about genetics or the speed of light in a vacuum to maybe fix a loose wire in a lamp. ”A history buff and a writer huh? Well, you’re lucky, next on our tour’s probably gonna be your home away from home on campus. I’m a business major, it’s all the joys of account, marketing and human resources management – not that I’ve really got many staff to manage.” The store had pretty much just been a family affair when his parents had run it, now, out of necessity, there were a couple of assistants, but still, he liked to handle all the big stuff himself.
