DANIELLE would never forgot the day she left the FBI, it wasn't something she ever thought she would do as she thought she would retire in that career field, but becoming a vampire had forced her to change her life plans completely. Aside from the obvious blood issues, people would begin to see how she wasn't aging after too long and then she would be forced to relocate. Not to mention the fact that she was so strung out from her new found vampire status that she wasn't able to focus on any of her cases. All she could hear were people's hearts beating, the blood pumping through their veins. It was hard to concentrate on much else, and so, relecutanty, she had to leave. Not to mention that she was still searching for her possessed, presumed dead husband. There was entirely too much on her plate to do much else, and so, she left and never looked back, instead opting for something much more small scale.
Mystic Falls Police Department.
It was lowkey enough to where she would be able to do as she pleased in terms of finding Oliver, amongst other things it kept her informed about the town as well as surrounding counties. She had resources she wouldn't have if she had joined and honestly, if she sat around her place all day and night with no job to go to everyday she would drive herself utterly crazy with her thoughts. And that was something she couldn't afford to do, her thoughts consumed her enough as it was. So, joining a small scale police department was the right move for her, at the time. When she first moved to Mystic Falls it was perfect, the Sheriff was super understanding and on top of that, she was reunited with one of her closest work friends who soon enough became her partner in the department.
Luke Adams. A friend from the FBI who she had helped and had been helped by on several cases. The two went way back and she was more thankful than he or anyone else would know for him to be in the same town as she was. Having a friendly face to go to was exactly what she needed. And sure, she now had Cory back in her life and she was thankful for that, truly, but she couldn't rely on her twin brother all the time, she wouldn't place her immense burdens on him when he had plenty of his own. So having someone else to talk to was nice and she was grateful for it. When she had joined, they instantly connected as if no time had passed at all, it was honestly... comforting. Hell, it made her feel human again, something she couldn't say happened all that often. But more than that, he reminded her of Oliver.
Danielle had spent too much time away from the job and knew it was time to return, especially since her last encounter with her new friend Casey. Catching the bad guy and getting another piece of shit off the streets felt good and plus, it made for an excellent distraction from the stress that was her life. After that incident with Casey, she decided enough was enough and marched herself back to the department the very next day. Liz was more than happy to have her back and just like that, she was back in with the department as detective, which also meant she would get to see Luke once more, someone who had made sure to keep in contact even after she took her sabbatical from the department. It was comforting to say the very least, that he cared.
Nevertheless, she walked back into the department, another day in the life. Another day of work, something she knew how to do incredibly well, her stats proved that. Setting her things down into her office, which hadn't changed one bit since she had last left it, she wandered over to Luke's office to see if he were in yet and sure enough, there he was, feet propped up against his desk as he was reading over case files. "Long time no see, partner." She spoke, a cheesy grin spread across her lips as she entered into his office, leaning up against the doorframe as she looked at him, looking the same as always. For the first time a long time, her life felt normal. She felt normal.

Luke had worked in a lot of different places over the years and he’d had various jobs in different kinds of law enforcement. He’d worked for Homeland Security in the past along with the FBI, he’d been elected Sheriff in one of the counties he used to live in and he’d also worked as a private detective. He hadn’t known exactly what job he’d wanted to go for when he’d decided to move to Mystic Falls with his family since being his own boss definitely had its perks but with everything that he had learned about the town he had come to realise that working as a detective was probably the best way to go. There were so many supernaturals in Mystic Falls and not all of them wanted to live peacefully like Luke and his family did. There were far too many deaths in the town than he was comfortable with and as far as he was concerned working as a detective was his way of protecting the town. He and his brothers had all decided on their own way of doing that a long time ago, Nick always went for something in the medical profession and was currently working as a doctor at the local hospital while for Sean his calling was as a firefighter. They had all lived much longer than they perhaps should have done and they’d seen so much during that time so this was their way of giving back. Luke would be lying if he said that he hadn’t felt apprehensive at first about the idea of moving to Mystic Falls, after all it hadn’t taken much digging for him to find out that there weren’t just supernaturals in town but plenty of hunters too and considering that Nick’s eldest son James had already died at the hands of hunters Luke knew that he didn’t want anyone else that he loved to lose their life like that. As it was they had been in town for the last few years, though, and they had been incredibly careful so if any hunters did know about their presence in town then they were seemingly leaving them be and for that Luke was truly grateful. His family had already been through so much and aside from his nephew, Luke had also lost just about every woman that he’d ever loved so the truth was that he wasn’t sure that he could stand losing anyone else. Letting people get close to him wasn’t something that he found particularly easy given everything that had happened but there were a couple of people he’d met along the way who had managed to make a lasting impression on him and he knew that those were people that he wanted to keep in his life for as long as possible. One of those was Danielle. They had worked together in the FBI before and even after that they’d still partnered up on occasion. She was the second partner he’d worked with after he’d arrived in Mystic Falls and after she went on her sabbatical he had refused another full time partner because he had known that it would never be the same. Since then he’d worked with people when he’d needed to but otherwise he had worked alone. He and Dani had kept in touch which had made things easier and he’d made it clear that he was going to be there for her whenever she needed him but as he looked up from the case file he was reading in time to see her reaching the door to his office he couldn’t deny that he was surprised. “You’re telling me,” he agreed, a grin already forming on his face as he got to his feet. “Get over here,” he said, closing the distance between them before pulling her into a hug. “So are you just passing through?” he asked, not wanting to get his hopes up that she might just be back at long last. ━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
DANIELLE wasn't one to have many friendships in life. With the amount of trauma and grief she had experienced over the years she didn't want to risk experiencing that all over again. She wasn't a stranger to grief, hell her life was filled with it. But there was only so much grief one person could take before they broke completely and the loss of her twin and then husband had almost got her there. But the light she had once possessed was long gone from her eyes, instead filled with grief and sadness, hopelessness. The one light in her life was her twin brother coming back to life, something she was more than thankful for. She would never understand why he was alive again, but she was not complaining in any form as she had missed him dearly. He was her other half and losing him had shattered her into a million tiny little pieces. But slowly she was becoming whole again, it would just take some time. Something she now had a lot of.
Regardless, she knew she couldn't just stay inside of her motel room and sulk about the fact that she had no new leads on Oliver's whereabouts, or Brooke's for the matter. Despite the fact that she had no new leads she wouldn't stop searching, but she couldn't obsess over it either. Staying locked away in the darkness of her motel room with her laptop wasn't going to find him any quicker, nor was it good for her mental health. One too many times she had let her thoughts get the best of her and she couldn't let that happen, especially not with the thirst issues she has been having here lately, which was an entire other issue completely. Nevertheless, she knew she needed to get her mind of life for a while, a distraction at best and what better way to accomplish that than work? Detective dealt with plenty to keep her busy, plus, in this town she would remain busy. Especially here lately, there had been death after death and the Sheriff was growing more and more sucusoois, wanting every man and woman she had on staff looking into it, so she had welcomed her back with open arms when she had explained how she was ready to get back to work.
And so she shall.
One of the good things about coming back to work was being reunited with her partner, Luke. The two of them had worked together back when she was in the bureau and then again when she relocated to Mystic Falls. It was nice having a familiar face in town, especially at work. It made things that much easier, not to mention the fact that her and Luke clicked in every way possible, making working with him easier than she had with any other partner she had throughout her career. As she leaned against his office doorway, she watched as his face lit up in surprise and glee at her sudden appearance, rising to his feet and enveloping her into a tight hug. She laughed as she hugged him back just as tightly before pulling away as he asked her if she was just passing through.
"You'll be happy to hear that I'm back from my sabbatical, so you're stuck with me! How have you been?" She replied cheerily, nudging him jokingly as she looked around his office, which looked the exact same as it had before she had taken her leave of absence. "I was long overdue to return. Catch me up on what I've missed, any new cases you're working on?" She asked, taking a seat in the chair across from his own in front of his desk. Now that she was back full time again, she was ready to dive head first into work, prepared to take on any cases she could. Whatever it took to get her mind of things, she was prepared to do it all.

Luke had earned enough money over the years to make sure that he could live comfortably without having to worry about working but that wasn’t him. He had never been the kind of person who could spend each day without actually doing anything, he preferred to keep busy and it had always been the same. He could have done any number of things when he got to Mystic Falls but working as a detective was what he liked to do best so the truth was that it had been an easy decision to make. Not only was it something that he enjoyed doing but it was also a good way of knowing what was going on around Mystic Falls and making sure that his family continued to fly under the radar. He knew that there were other people on the force who were supernatural, one of the patrol officers was a vampire and another was a chimera so in a way it was good to know that he wasn’t alone. The person that he trusted most was Dani, however, and the truth was that it just wasn’t the same without her around. He’d had other partners since then but it was never quite the same and he was pretty sure that it never would be. He was doing the best he could, though, and he knew that he couldn’t do anymore than that. There were always plenty of cases that needed to be solved to keep him busy and that was something that he was glad about. He hadn’t thought that a small town in Virgina would be half as busy as Mystic Falls was but he knew that with the amount of people in town who were supernatural then he shouldn’t really be surprised. He had hoped that sooner or later Dani would return but he hadn’t expected it to happen like this. The two of them had stayed in touch and he had thought that she might give him a heads up but if he was honest this was actually better – it was a nice surprise. It was easy for him to get to his feet and pull Dani into a hug and her reaction made it that much better. There were few people in the world that Luke was close to but Dani was definitely one of those people and he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t missed her. He had understood why she had felt the need to leave, after all it couldn’t have been easy for her to get her head around the fact that she had become a vampire or anything that had happened after that but she’d seemed to be doing better and he hoped that she still was. “How ever will I cope?” Luke chuckled, an amused smile forming on his face as he looked over at her. “I’ve been fine, I’ve been keeping busy,” he admitted. “How about you, how have you been?” he asked, knowing that was the much better question. As she told him to catch her up on what she’d missed and any new cases he was working on, he couldn’t help but laugh. “How long have you got?” he asked, nodding in the direction of the large stack of cases that was currently piled up on his desk. “I was actually about to head out and interview some witnesses if you’re up for coming along.”DANIELLE COLLIER

DANIELLE was grateful for a friend like Luke, more than he would truly ever know. It was nice having someone besides her brother who knew the truth about what she was. She actually had someone she could vent to and sure, she did have her brother but she didn't want to burden him more than she already had. He had been given a second chance at life, much like herself, and so the last thing she wanted was to get him involved in what she was going through as a vampire. Danielle knew Cory wouldn't approve of her thought process, on how she didn't want to involve him in this vampire mess, but she couldn't help it. Cory was her twin brother, someone she had taken care of their entire life and yes, while he wasn't the frail little human he once was, her need to protect and care for him would never waiver. No matter how much he wanted her to do so. Danielle was just the kind of person who would much rather help others rather than help herself - she always put others first, something she didn't think would ever change.
Nevertheless, she was glad to be back at work, something she had missed terribly. She hated not being busy, especially since being turned into a vampire. Danielle needed something to keep her busy, something she could use as a much needed distraction from life. Work was the perfect answer to her little dilemma. The constant cases in this town would never waiver, not as long as the supernatural was around. For such a small town, the local police department sure did have a lot of business. Honestly she was just glad to be back, to be able to be useful for once. Feeling needed was a nice touch too. Seeing Luke in person again was also something she was thankful for. Sure, the two had kept in touch over the phone, with Luke checking in on her every once and awhile. But being in person was much better and she was grateful for his company.
Granted, Danielle hadn't wanted to leave before, but with her thirst issues, with searching for Oliver, and with her brother being alive again, the last place she really needed to be was work. She had more important things to deal with in her life and so, for the time being, she took a much needed sabbatical, but she was happy to be back and seeing Luke's reaction to her sudden appearance made it all worth it. As she had sat down in the chair opposite of his, her eyes followed Luke as he went to sit back in his own chair, explaining how he had been fine, just keeping busy as always. But then he asked her how she was doing and she sighed. "Honestly? I've been better, but I'm dealing with it. Just glad to be back." She stated, being rather short in her answer. Knowing Luke, he would more than likely pry, but that was why she had changed the subject so quickly like she had. Made not getting into her shitty life a little easier.
Hearing his joke made her chuckle as she looked over in the direction he had nodded to; there in the corner of his too small of a desk, was a huge stack of case files. That sure did answer her question. "You sure have been busy. How long have you been assigned these cases?" She questioned as she picked the file off the top of the stack and opened it, flipping through the files that were inside. Here lately, they all seemed to be the same issue: missing persons, bodies found drained of blood, it was never ending and it was becoming apparent that this town had a supernatural problem.
'I was actually about to head out and interview some witnesses if you’re up for coming along.' Hearing his invitation to help him out with interviewing some witnesses made her perk up. She was most definitely ready to be back in the action and she eagerly nodded in response. "Yes please, let's go. I'll drive while you catch me up to speed on the case." She said, a grin now visible on her face as she stood to her feet, grabbing his car keys from his desk as she dangled them in front of him teasingly before turning around and heading out the door. Danielle couldn't hide the excitement, being back in the thick of things work related seemed to raise her spirits, something she desperately had been needing.

Luke had learned a long time ago that getting close to people wasn’t a good idea. His parents died while he was still quite young and he lost the first girl he loved, Sean’s younger sister, a few days before their twentieth birthday. That had been the start of a pattern of Luke losing people he loved and over time he had come to realise that it was easier if he didn’t let people get close enough to hurt him when they died but there were always going to be a few who slipped through his defences no matter how hard he tried to keep those walls up. He had his brothers, Lauren and the kids in his life and Olivia was in Mystic Falls as well so he knew that he was lucky in that respect but he would be lying if he said that there weren’t times when he found himself feeling jealous of the family that Nick had built. Luke was pretty sure that that wasn’t on the cards for him, though, and he had done his best to make his peace with that a long time ago. He might not have been able to build a family of his own the way that his brother had but he could at least do his best to keep them and everyone else in Mystic Falls as safe as possible and that was exactly what he was trying to do through his work as a detective. It wasn’t the same without Danielle around and that was something that Luke wasn’t afraid to admit. Ever since she left he had preferred working alone because there wasn’t anyone who could measure up to her and that wasn’t a decision that he regretted. He hadn’t known when or if she could come back but he hadn’t lost hope and now it seemed like he was right to do that. “I know it’s not easy but you can do this, I have faith in you,” he offered. Danielle had earned his trust a long time ago and it was so much easier now that they knew what the other was. It gave them someone that they could confide in and for Luke it meant that he could support Danielle when she needed him as well. As Danielle looked at the stack of files on his desk, a humourless laugh escaped Luke’s lips. “These are all ones that have come in over the last few days. I seem to clear one stack and another takes its place,” he explained. There was certainly enough going on in Mystic Falls to keep him busy, that was for sure. It was so natural to fall into old habits and ask Danielle if she wanted to go with him to speak to some witnesses and he felt a smile form on his face as he realised just how up for throwing herself back into it she really was. As she grabbed his car keys, however, a playful groan left his lips. “You’re really going to subject me to your driving on your first day back?” he teased, rolling his eyes jokingly before slipping his phone and wallet into his pocket just in case he needed them and following her outside. “Last chance to back out and get out while you still can if you want to,” he said, letting his arm rest against the roof of the passenger’s side of the car as he waited for Danielle to unlock the door. BEING back at work again felt good, real good. It made her feel normal, like she was a human again just living their life. It reminded her of better times, it's why she worked at all. With being a vampire she didn't necessarily need to have a job as she could use compulsion to get pretty much whatever she needed or wanted, which is nice, yes. But at the same time, that wasn't living, not really. In order to actually function normally, she needed some sense of normalcy to achieve that and that is where work came into play. Being a detective was who she was, that never changed, even with she became a vampire. All she knew was this, solving crimes and helping those affected by them. Danielle enjoyed it, really enjoyed it. Hell, it just made her feel human and here lately, that was becoming harder and harder, especially with how her cravings had been. She didn't know why they were acting up as she had been a vampire for going on three plus years now, shouldn't she have this figured out?
One would think so.
Regardless, she was just glad to be back and more importantly, back with her partner Luke. He made things tolerable and him knowing what she truly was definitely helped things. Even though she had her twin, he wasn't with her all the time, which is whee Luke came into play while at work. But it was ore than that as he made sure to keep up with her off work as well, which she deeply appreciated, more than he probably would ever know. 'I have faith in you.' She heard Luke say and that made a small smile spread across her lips. "At least one of us does." She said, chuckling softly at his comment, although she knew he meant every word he said... as did she. At least on of them had faith in her because here lately she didn't have much of that. Faith.
With cases beginning to pile on every detective, she wasn't surprised Luke had taken on more. This town was beginning to turn into a major city, like Detroit. With the crime and death that happened in this town, you'd think they were in a bigger city. Except, they weren't, and that was part of the problem. Danielle was just glad the department had good detectives working for it, especially one with Luke's background. Having people who knew what was truly going on working the cases made all the difference. It meant they could track down the things causing all the issues... all the death. At least, that's what she hoped she could do, make some sort of difference and suddenly she understood what Brooke and even Oliver had gone through as hunters. Wanting to make a difference in a crap world only to not even make a dent. It could grow tiresome, even for experienced hunters.
Walking outside, Danielle breathed in the fresh air as she made her way over to Luke's car, keys in hand. She laughed at Luke's little comment. "Hey! My driving is not that bad." It wasn't the greatest, but he made it seem like she was this godawful driver. Sure she almost ran the two of them off the road... a few times, but they were in pursuit of a suspect some of those times and the others, well, she blamed the deer that ran out in the middle of the road. Danielle couldn't help but playfully roll her eyes at his comment of backing out as she put the keys into the door and unlocked the doors, getting into the driver's seat. "I just got back and you're already trying to get rid of me," she teased as she put the key into the ignition and started the car. Danielle appreciated the witty back and forth banter between the two as it helped lighten the mood and made for an excellent distraction from what was going on in her life outside of work.

No matter where Luke ended up he seemed to work alone most of the time. He’d had a few partners over the years but he was sure to outlive pretty much everyone around him and that had made making any meaningful connections with people very difficult. He had lost so many people over the course of his life that the thought of losing anyone else wasn’t something that he was sure that he would be able to deal with. Most of his past relationships had ended with the woman dying in one way or another and he had also seen the devastation that had come from Nick and Lauren losing James. It could have easily torn them apart but if anything it had brought them closer together and for that he was grateful. Ever since he was a child the only two people he’d had in his life that he could always count on were Nick and Sean and Luke was fine with that but the truth was that he missed having others in his life. Danielle had become his partner first and his friend second but they’d formed a connection between them and they’d stayed in touch even after she’d decided to take some time out. Selfishly a part of Luke was glad that he wouldn’t have to worry about Dani growing old like everyone else while he remained the same now but he knew that becoming a vampire wasn’t what she’d wanted so he had been trying to help her as best he could. “You’ve got this and if you come close to losing control just remember that I’ll be right beside you the whole time. I won’t let anything happen,” Luke assured her, knowing that he wasn’t going to let Dani hurt anyone or end up getting hurt herself. He could see that she still didn’t believe in herself but he hoped that in time she would start to do so. Either way he was glad that she was back anyway because the truth was that he’d missed her and with the amount of cases that were piling up he knew that they would get through them twice as quickly together since they could share the workload. Luke knew that every detective in the department was busy but with his case solving rate as high as it was he often seemed to have more than anyone else although that was something that he had grown used to. Heading outside, Luke couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face as Dani laughed. “Now that’s something I’ve missed hearing,” he grinned, knowing that it had been a while since he’d last heard her laugh properly. “Trust me, your driving is bad. The streets of Mystic Falls have been a lot safer without you driving them,” he teased. He didn’t really mind Dani’s driving too much but he couldn’t resist the opportunity to give her a hard time about it in jest considering that he hadn’t been able to do that for so long. “Never, you know that,” he chuckled as she said that he was already trying to get rid of her before climbing into the passenger’s seat. DANIELLE couldn't deny that laughing as she just had felt really good. It seemed, especially here lately, she hadn't found much to laugh about. It was one tragedy after another. One more disaster that happened to her, something she had to fix. Hell, Danielle didn't think she had laughed since she had lost Oliver. Granted, she had felt joy when she got Cory back, that had been the only real joy she had found, but having Luke in her life did help things a bit. If she were being honest, it was like she had Oliver in her life again as he and Luke shared many different qualities. That thought alone made her sad. God she missed Oliver and she beat herself up over not finding him - over not saving him, every single damn day. It was one of her failures in life she would never get over and honestly, she would never give up looking for him. She knew Oliver didn't want her to look for him but how could she not?
Hearing Luke said that he was there for her, would help her through it to where nothing would happen, reassured her. "Thank you." She said with a soft smile, it did make her feel better that she had someone else in her corner. Having her twin was more than enough, but it didn't hurt to have someone else there too especially someone who could easily subdue her if it came down to it. If she were to lose control she knew Luke would be able to handle it, would be the one to prevent her from harming others or even herself. With how old Luke was and with him being a kitsune, she was more than comfortable with him stepping in and handling matters if need be. Not to mention that she didn't have all that much faith in herself to begin with, not anymore at least. Danielle puts on a brave face, but deep down she is just as scared as everyone else was.
God she was glad she was back at work, it made life more manageable. Plus, it helped distract her from what was going on in her life, made her forget her cravings even just for a little bit. She was glad she had been partnered with Luke as the two just clicked. They knew how one another moved, how they each worked during cases. It made solving them ten times easier when the other knew what the other needed and vice-versa. They knew who did what in the investigation phase. All around they were the perfect match and she was glad the Sheriff had paired the two.
Not to mention that she could help with the piles of cases Luke had taken on since she had been gone. Just being busy was just what she needed. As she started the car she looked over at Luke as he said how he missed hearing her laugh, followed by saying ow the entire town would be safer when she wasn't driving and she let out a snort. "Oh please." She said as she put the car into drive and took off down the road towards the crime scene where they would be interviewing some witnesses. Danielle smiled as he said he never wanted to get rid of her. "Good, because you're stuck with me!" She said teasingly, hands gripping around the steering wheel as she drove down the road. Hopefully the witnesses would cooperate and make their lives easier, but in this line of work, that was better said than done.

More often than not Luke preferred to work without a partner. He knew that there were benefits to having someone around who would always have his back but the truth was that it took a lot for him to trust people and even more for him to let them get really close to him. Working alongside someone all day every day wasn’t a bad thing for most people but for Luke it wasn’t something that he was very good at. He was more than happy working with a team but when it came to working with just one person he tried to avoid it as much as he could. He hadn’t thought that Mystic Falls would be any different and he’d worked on his own to begin with but then he’d found himself partnered with Dani and over time they’d built a rapport that worked for them. He hadn’t felt comfortable letting her get truly close to him before she became a vampire but after that it had felt like a weight had been lifted. He had to conceal who he really was from so many people around him but he didn’t have to do that with Dani, not anymore, and it was a relief to say the least. It also meant that he would be there to make sure that she didn’t hurt anyone and he knew that that wasn’t ever going to be a bad thing. He believed in her but he knew that she didn’t necessarily share that same belief in herself and he knew that he would do what he could in order to stop her from doubting herself. He hadn’t realised just how much he had taken having Dani around for granted until she was gone and he couldn’t deny that he was glad that she was back. The cases had been piling up a lot lately and no matter how quickly he worked or how many hours he put in it was simply never enough. Whenever he closed one case three more took its place and it didn’t seem to be slowing down at all. Heading out to the car it felt like old times again and that alone was enough to bring a smile to Luke’s face. Letting people break through his walls wasn’t something that Luke tended to do too often but Dani had managed it and it was good to be able to fall into old habits again. “Ask anyone, there has been a lot less road rage around here,” Luke teased as he settled back in his seat and let Dani drive. He had always given her a hard time about her driving but it was only ever in good fun and thankfully Dani knew that. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he grinned. “Have you seen many other people since you came back?” he asked, not sure whether she had managed to catch up with anyone else yet or not. ━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
LUKE was one of those people who she could be her real self with. There were only few people she could actually be herself with, Luke, her brother, and her new friend Casey. Other than them she was all alone, forced to hide a part of herself to everyone else. With Luke though, life and work for that matter, were easy. Before she had figured out what he was, she had made damn sure to keep her vampire side a secret, not wanting to freak him out or risk hurting him. The last thing she ever wanted was to lose control and end up hurting someone she cared for. That was her biggest fear; losing control. She fought against her urges every single damn day, not wanting to give in to her monstrous tendencies. It got exhausting, she would admit. But if it meant keeping others safe, she would continue to do it. If there came a time when she lost herself completely to the bloodlust, she would do whatever it took to keep those she cared for safe.
Whatever she had to do.
But having a partner at work who was also something supernatural, who knew the struggles she went through, made it all easier on her. And while Luke wasn't a vampire like she was, instead a kitsune, they were similar in a lot of ways. He understood her struggles, what it meant to never grow old, would be able to protect himself against her if he needed to. Knowing he could stop her if he needed to put her at ease, not by much, but enough to where she wasn't paranoid as hell that she could risk snapping and ripping his throat out. Alongside of their supernatural sides, the two made pretty damn good partners. They understood one another, how they operated when it came to work. Having a partner like Luke made this job easier and she had wished she had him as a partner for her entire career because things would've been way easier on her if he had. Hell, she often wondered if she would have even been turned into a vampire if she had Luke by her side back then. She couldn't say one way or another, and it wasn't like she good to anything about it now. But it did make her wonder at times.
Danielle could only imagine how many cases had piled up since taking her sabbatical and she couldn't help but feel bad that she had left all of that on Luke when she had left. But she needed to leave, it's what was best for her at the time and she had been following leads on Oliver during her absence, although those leads didn't actually lead anywhere. All they led to was dead end after dead end, which frustrated her to no end. But she couldn't do anything about it. All she could do was continue searching and hoping the leads went somewhere. Nevertheless, she was back at work and keeping busy, something she desperately needed. The piles of cases they were stacked up gave her plenty to do and not to mention that she was happy to be back at work alongside of Luke again.
It felt like old times again. 'Ask anyone, there has been a lot less road rage around here,' Luke said teasingly and she snorted, giving him a pointed look as she turned her attention back towards the road. "Well I wouldn't have to rage if people would learn how to get out of my way." She pointed out with a smirk. Sure, her road rage got bad at times, but with being a vampire her emotions were in overdrive all the damn time, so when she got angry, she was furious. Road rage was no exception, but all she had to do was flash her badge and they got out of her damn way. Problem solved, sorta. 'Have you seen many other people since you came back?' Luke's question was a loaded one and she looked over at him, as to say seriously? He knew she didn't have many people she hung around, no one but her brother anyways. "Um, just my brother." She replied, her grip tightening slightly on the wheel, driving towards the location. "Catch me up to speed on this case." She said, turning the conversation back on work instead of focused on her, something she couldn't stand. Ever since becoming a vampire, Danielle had never liked having all the attention on her. Hell, she never really had. Her main priority growing up was on her brother and her career, still was. She was very straight forward in a lot of aspects, but talking about herself, especially her personal life always seemed to make her very uncomfortable, especially now.

Luke had thought that Nick was crazy at first when he’d suggested they all move to Mystic Falls. After everything that had happened he had thought that his brother would have wanted to be as far away from hunters and others who were a part of the supernatural world as possible but he had decided the complete opposite. Now Luke knew that it wasn’t a bad thing at all, there were plenty of hunters in town but their family was able to fly under the radar and essentially hide in plain sight. It made things that much easier for all of them and it meant that Nick’s kids had the chance to be around others who were like them as long as they didn’t let the wrong people know that they were supernatural. Luke had lost so many people that he loved over the course of his long life and he knew that the last thing that he wanted was to lose anyone else. James’ death had almost broken Nick and Lauren but they had stuck together and managed to move on from that loss but he knew that they would never forget what had happened to their eldest son. They had all managed to build lives for themselves in Mystic Falls and Luke knew that that was just as it should be. It had been easy for him to get a job on the police force with all of the experience he had and he had been a little unsure about being assigned a partner to begin with but now he knew that it was one of the best things that could have happened. He had kept what he was to himself and he had only come clean about it after he’d learned that Danielle was a vampire. Then he had known that if he expected her to trust him then he needed to trust her in return and once that door had been opened he really hadn’t looked back. The two of them had worked well together and even though he had understood when she’d needed to take some time off he couldn’t deny that during the time she’d been gone he had missed her not just as his partner but also as his friend. They had stayed in touch and he’d helped her as much as he could but being able to talk on the phone wasn’t the same as being able to see someone face to face and he was only now starting to realise just how true that actually was. The look Danielle gave him when he said that there’d been a lot less road rage around Mystic Falls was enough to draw a smile to Luke’s lips. “Maybe I’ll ask the Sheriff to send out a town-wide alert,” he grinned. Danielle’s driving wasn’t actually that bad at all, it was just something that he liked to give her a hard time about now and then, especially now that she was back. As she said that she’d only seen her brother, Luke nodded. “I bet he was glad to see you,” he said gently. Luke definitely understood the bond between them, Dani was a twin just like he was and he always felt a sense of being whole again whenever he and Nick were reunited after being apart for a while. They had always been close but they had lived separate lives as well and it was the same for Dani and Cory although she’d unfortunately had to experience what it was like to lose her twin and that was something that Luke knew he wouldn’t wish on anyone. The way her grip tightened on the wheel didn’t go unnoticed but Luke wasn’t sure whether that was something to do with her brother, the way the attention had been focused on her or the case itself so as she asked him to get her up to speed on the case, he knew that it would be best to focus on that for a moment instead. “This one started out like all of the other disappearances. The woman vanished without a trace but this time she turned up dead two weeks later. Her death was covered up to look like an animal attack but there were traces of mercury in her system and marks on her body that looked like signs of foul play,” he explained. It was an odd case, that was for sure, but he knew that the two of them would figure it out. “You’re sure you’re ready for this?”DANIELLE COLLIER

DANI couldn't deny that she wanted a change of subject. One thing that she always hated was talking about herself or her personal life in general. Her life had been so fucking screwed up that talking about any aspect of it ruined her day completely. More than that, she just did not like talking about herself, especially now. Ever since becoming a vampire nothing in her life had gone her way. Well, that wasn't entirely true given as though she had gotten her brother back and that in of itself was a blessing. Never did she think she would have been granted another chance with her twin. She most definitely hadn't done anything to deserve it, but even then, she was not going to complain. Through all the darkness, her brother being alive once more was the light at the end of the tunnel. The one thing that seemed to make her life worth living.
Granted, things had gotten better as years passed with being a vampire. One thing that had improved was her grip on this whole vampire lifestyle. Her control gradually had gotten better, much better since she had last worked for the department. Last time she had almost lost all control inside of the department but thankfully Luke had been there to help her gain control again. But after that almost catastrophe, she couldn't take any chances at harming someone, especially not within the department. Which was why she had taken the sabbatical in the first place, to try and get a grip on her life, on her bloodlust especially. Thankfully, getting out of town had served more than one purpose. While she had left town to try and get control over her life again, she had also left town to follow up on a lead about Oliver. Of course, like most of the leads lately, that one too had gone absolutely nowhere, leaving her exhausted and frustrated.
But despite the setback, she wouldn't give up.
In the meantime of tracking down more leads, Dani was just glad to be back in the action. Taking on cases again meant keeping her mind off of Oliver, it provided her with a distraction she never thought she needed. In many ways, being back on a case was comforting. Law enforcement was her entire life, it had been the career she had always wanted, had excelled at. It was as if she were always meant to be in this profession because she was damn good at it. It also helped that she had such an amazing partner too. Having Luke as her partner had made her job ten times easier. She had plenty of other partners throughout her career and besides Luke, she had would have preferred being alone rather than having any backup at all. All her other partners were rather useless, but not Luke. Oh no, he was everything she could have wanted in a partner, the two just clicked, making solving cases that much easier.
Driving down the road, Dani only rolled her eyes at Luke's little comment. She knew it was all playful banter, he liked to rile her up. But she didn't mind it one bit, she enjoyed it immensely. It was nice being able to let loose and have fun with someone and not have to hide what she was. Given what Luke was, it was nice to be herself around him. Of course, he also knew when she was ready to change the subject, almost like he could read her mind and thankfully, he didn't pry when she redirected the conversation back towards the case. Dani's eyes flashed briefly over to Luke as he spoke, keeping her head forward as she drove, listening how this case started out like all the others - a disappearance and then a body would turn up weeks later. It was becoming a pattern and one she didn't like one bit.
Death covered up to look like an animal attack was almost always a tell-tale sign of supernatural involvement, especially in this town. She knew all the ways the Sheriff covered up cases for the public's sake, animal attack being her go to. One thing that was different, however, was the traces of mercury in the woman's system. It was definitely a homicide, that much was evident just by reading the autopsy report, but it was odd nevertheless. 'You’re sure you’re ready for this?' Luke said to her as she pulled up to the location of the witnesses they were going to question, putting the car into park. "Of course I am, why wouldn't I be?" She asked, a bit on the defense, although she hadn't meant it to come across as such, but Luke should know she was ready for this, she had spent her entire career doing just this. Despite being off the job for a bit, she still knew how to do her job. This case was no different than the rest she had solved, so of course she was ready for this.
She had to be.

Luke had been alive for such a long time that things rarely surprised him these days. He knew that he could have easily gone for a different career after he’d tried his hand at being a cop but the truth was that this was what he was meant to do. He had been lucky enough to figure that out just like Nick had found out that he was meant to be a doctor and Sean had found out that he was meant to be a firefighter. It had taken them all a while but in the end they had each found their calling and Luke knew that that was just as it should be. There were times when it was easy to figure out who was responsible for breaking the law on a case he was working on but more often than not he had to give it some thought and he couldn’t deny that he liked the mystery of it all. He had worked various jobs in law enforcement over the years but being a detective was his favourite by far. He wasn’t very good at working with others usually, he tended to keep to himself and working with a partner meant having to let someone get close to him which wasn’t something that he had ever been very good at. Things were different with Dani though, she was supernatural too which meant that he didn’t have to hide anything from her and he could help her if she ever found herself struggling with being a vampire. She was the first partner he’d had in a long time but it worked well for them. They were a good team and he couldn’t deny that he had missed working with her during the time that she had been gone. He hadn’t expected her to just show up at the station the way she had done since she hadn’t even told him that she was back in town but it had been a pleasant surprise and he couldn’t deny that he was glad to have her help with the stack of cases that had been building up. There were other detectives working at the station but none of them had the solve rate that he and Dani did. Even while she was gone he had kept up that standard so the cases had kept being piled on him and he had been doing his best to keep it up but two heads were much better than one when the other was Dani’s so it was good to have someone to share the load with again. Slipping back into old habits was so easy with her and Luke couldn’t resist teasing her. Dani always gave as good as she got and the playful banter that always passed between the two of them definitely made the time pass that much quicker. She was one of the few people outside of his family that he trusted completely and they had known each other for a while now so they were pretty good at reading each other. He knew better than to pry when Dani didn’t want him to and instead he focused on filling her in on what was going on with the case they were working. There had been so many disappearances around Mystic Falls and so many instances of people showing up in the town with no idea how they had ended up there so it was clear that something was going on but so far no one seemed to know what was going on. Add the deaths that were made out to be animal attacks to those who weren’t in the know just like this one had been and there was plenty to be getting on with. Luke hadn’t let the Sheriff or anyone else at the station aside from Dani know what he was but it was clear that this wasn’t an animal attack and with traces of mercury in the woman’s system it was clear that this was something new entirely. The question had slipped out as he had parked the car but Dani was straight on the defence and Luke studied her carefully for a moment as he looked over at her. “You know I didn’t mean it like that,” he said at last. “It can just take time to get back into it.” That was something that he knew firsthand but Dani was a natural so he had a feeling that she would be fine. “I called ahead, there are a couple of people we need to speak to so we might be here a while.”DANIELLE COLLIER

DANI knew she shouldn't have snapped at Luke like she just had, but she just couldn't help it. For so long people had doubted her simply because she was a woman. They didn't think she could do it, that it was a man's job. She didn't know how long she had heard that, more times than she could count. Those words, that sexism, was what fueled her passion and determination to pursue the career that much further. She would prove them all wrong, that she could do this job. It wasn't just for men and she did it better than any other man she had come up against. As a matter of fact, she had worked up the career ladder rather quickly, becoming one of the youngest FBI special agents they have ever had. Danielle Collier was not to be denied, she wasn't to be underestimated either. Quickly she became top in her field, being the detective, the person, to be called when agencies and/or departments needed extra help. There were things she saw, she did, that led to her success in cases.
Danielle was damn good at what she did and it had become second nature to her, so hearing that slight into her abilities by Luke caused her to snap, even though he meant no harm. She didn't know, she just was just in one of those moods. Then again, she had been in one of those moods for a long time now. Hell, who was she kidding, she had been like this since she had lost Ollie. Ever since that fateful night she had never been the same and she was sure Cory and Luke both could see that. It wasn't like she was hiding how she felt, she showed her emotions in her facial expressions. Danielle had quite the expressive face after all...
Luke had been teasing, only messing with her as a means to lighten up the mood. Her snapping at him had been out of line and she had instantly regretted it the moment the words had left her lips. Playful banter was just a part of their dynamic. With the two being partners as long as they had, the two had grown to pick up on one another's facial expressions, knew when the other didn't want to talk about something or wanted the subject to change. They were damn good at reading one another and she knew Luke could tell something was off with her, but he knew better than to pry when she didn't want to talk about something and he respected that. Something she was more than grateful for.
Thankfully he began to tell her about the case, explaining how the disappearances weren't a coincidence, that something else was at play. Something she had come to know about Mystic Falls was that something was always happening in this place, that everything that happened was more than likely supernatural related. This case was no different. The traces of mercury suggested this wasn't an animal attack or a vampire attack for the matter. It was something entirely different, which peaked her interest more than she would admit.
Parking the car, she unbuckled her seatbelt as she listened to Luke say that he hadn't meant what he had said early, that it wasn't meant to come across as anything other than playful banter. "I know." She said quietly, a but uncharacteristically as she out of the car. 'I called ahead, there are a couple of people we need to speak to so we might be here a while.' Luke said to her as she walked over to his side as they walked towards the front of the house where the witnesses lived. She motioned her hand forward, "Lead the way," she said to Luke. It was his case after all, so she was going to let him take the lead on this and she would help where necessary. Luke knew more about the case than she did, even though she had read through the file. But she was a quick study so it wouldn't take long for her to get caught up.
Nevertheless, walking side by side with Luke again felt good. Felt normal, and with everything going on in her life, she needed normal.
