The rum brought that welcoming burning sensation as it travelled down his throat. The Blood Den had been rammed that evening, but Lawrence had been asked to go work upstairs on the bar in the Underground Club. It was bearable, but he hated having humans scream their order at him and drunk girls asking for free shots. Thankfully he slipped away early, down those familiar stairs into the Emerald City. His second home. As it was creeping into the early hours of the morning the crowd had started to thin out, leaving behind the usual crowd. Those without daylight rings, the heavy drinkers and compelled humans, including the redhead, sat next to Lawrence. Eyes glazed over as she stared off into the distance under his instructions not to talk or move. His mind had been a mess since the return of his sister. Lawrence was elated to have Phoebe back in his life after spending years believing his family were dead, but naturally he was devastated to find out she too was a vampire now. Albeit, she didn’t seem fazed by it, handling it a lot better than he did, but then again she had always been the more robust one of the pair. Seeing Phoebe had stirred some deeply buried memories in Lawrence, including his parents forcing him out of their family home just how they did years later with his sister. It brought up all those feelings from decades ago. The guilt, and the anger. Guilty he’d left his sister behind and furious his parents did exactly the same thing with her. He just needed time to get his head around everything, including seeing her face in the Ruby Slipper as he’d done that evening. Slipping her free drinks most of the evening along with some of her friends. Just before he clocked off he spotted Phoebe hanging around the neck of some guy she had pointed out to him early. Part of him wanted to march over to the pair and play big brother, telling him to back off his sister but reminded himself Phoebe was no longer the young witch he left behind decades ago. She could clearly handle herself. Instead, he told her to be careful and he’d be downstairs if she needed anything. The redhead was lingering outside the bar as the bouncer was telling her the bar was full. It wasn't, but those were Hector's new rules. Compelled humans only. Lawrence offered to buy her drink, which was the least he could do before compelling her to follow him inside, sit down and be quiet whilst he sank his teeth into her neck. Only for a taste though. Just a few drops of blood was all he needed. Lawrence finished his drink as he glanced over at the human. Crimson liquid oozing from the puncture wounds in her neck, slowly rolling down her skin towards her chest. The temptation was too strong, he lunged forward setting his teeth back into her neck, listening carefully to her heartbeat as it slowed down. Lawrence ripped back after a few seconds, but her heart continued to slow. He’d taken too much, her body grew heavy against him. “Shit” He snapped. Steadily he moved back from the female, as her body fell towards the sofa. His gaze drifted up and he spotted the male Phoebe had been chatting to a few hours ago, but no Phoebe? “Hey, you, with the long hair. Weren’t you with my sister earlier? Blonde Canadian, quite short” He called out to the male. REMZI DURMAZ - we live here now

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ Emerald City. Leah had taken him here once before━it wasn’t technically a place where vampires could run free, but Remzi saw it as such. There were girls flitting around with trays and skimpy (but somehow still classy) outfits, one or two spinning around on stage, and all ripe for the taking. As long as they weren’t vampires (or something else) themselves, he could have just about any one of them he wanted.
And fuck yeah, they totally wanted him, too. Who wouldn’t?
Not Leah, not tonight, obviously. It didn’t bother him━though practically every night was spent by her side in LA; he didn’t need to be with her all the time. It wasn’t as if he’d come to Mystic Falls just for her, chasing the fun again, the exhilarating instability of their relationship. It wasn’t as if he’d come to the club that night hoping to catch a glimpse of her… no, he didn’t care that much. Why should he? She obviously didn’t give a shit about him.
Despite his awareness of the manipulation she put him through, Remzi didn’t care to pull away. He was just as bad, and he liked it. Something in him━maybe it was his mother’s voice, scolding him in the name of Allah, the weight of it hanging heavy around his neck with that pendant━told him he shouldn’t, though. This fun wasn’t something he could keep up long-term and use to propel him further in life. But why did he want that? Maybe it was something he thought he should strive for because of external pressures, but that was during life as a human. The rules were different now. Everything was different now.
Remzi guided one waitress in particular down to his lap━a brunette, and if Leah caught him, he had the perfect line about preferring them. Before he could even pierce her skin, though, the smell of blood flooded his senses, pungent and sweet. He twisted around in his seat, tearing away from where his nose nuzzled against her hot flesh, veins appearing under his eyes. It took everything in his being to not rush over there and steal that redheaded snack himself, but it seemed the vampire on her was already almost finished. Remzi could hear━no, could focus on nothing but her heartbeat and the fact that she was slowly dying. He almost didn’t hear the kid speak to him.
‘Hey, you, with the long hair. Weren’t you with my sister earlier? Blonde Canadian, quite short.’
“Huh?” Remzi glanced at the other vampire, brows furrowing. He went back to the redhead, though the feeding expression began to fade once he processed the boy’s words━or, rather, forced himself to process them. The only blonde he could think of was Leah, and every girl was short to him, at least all the ones he paid attention to, but she definitely wasn’t Canadian. “No, I don’t remember meeting any lumberjack chicks.” He snorted, “You forgot the ‘eh’.” Remzi added, a proud smile to accompany his joke.
“You gonna finish her off or just let her bleed out?” He asked, because Remzi gladly take her off his hands.

The guilty feeling that lay in the pitch of the stomach obviously wasn't enough to change Lawrence's behaviour. He was still ignoring Teddy’s calls and messages for selfish reasons. He couldn't face disappointing his best friend by telling him he was back drinking human blood again, but now he was back to drinking straight from the vein as well, with minimal control over it. He had no idea how he was going to explain it to Teddy. Lawrence had already convinced himself that his friend was going to turn his back on him, wanting nothing to do with him. Nothing to do with someone who was hurting people all in the name of food. He didn’t expect Teddy to understand though. How could he? He wasn’t a vampire rather a mortal who is satisfied after a burger and fries. Lawrence’s stomach was never full, it was always yearning for more. More blood. Every day was the same. Waking up to hunger that controlled him. Pushed him into killing people, like the poor redhead who lay on the sofa. Death would come soon for her. The female’s eyes were open and glossed over, still under the vampire’s compulsion. This was always the predicament he found himself in. Going that little bit too far with feeding and being faced with the decision to let them die or heal them and run the risk of becoming something like him. That stupid sign Hector had put was staring at Lawrence. Dispose of your dead humans. The redhead belonged to him and was his responsibility. It was a problem for later though. His attention was dragged away from the redhead though as a fresh face entered the bar. He wiped the drops of blood from his lips as he watched the other male. A face he was sure he’d seen with his sister a few hours ago. He’d rather she stayed away from vampires, but was conscious not to lecture her. Evidently, she lasted this long without him in her life. The long-haired vampire was looking back at Lawrence, but his eyes were not on Lawrence rather on the redhead next to him. Veins apparent under his eyes, his taste buds longing for blood. Lawrence let out a short laugh at the other vampire’s comments, “Well there’s someone upstairs who’s the double of you” At least under the flashing lights, “Unless I’m going senile in my old age… eh” A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. Despite leaving Canada decades ago he’d still clung onto his accent, possibly through choice. He was proud of his roots, proud to be a Canuck, even though thinking of his hometown promoted those sad memories of leaving. It wasn’t all bad though, some good memories buried deep amongst the shit ones. Blue eyes coasted over to the redhead as the vampire asked if he was going to finish her off. Handing her over would be an easy way to get rid of the body. Someone else's problem. He reached over, pulled the female upright again before looking back at the older-looking vampire, “Fill your boots buddy. I’m done” He wasn’t, but he could always find a snack on the way home, or feast on the blood bags in his fridge. At first the blood bags were satisfying, but since sinking his teeth into Hannya he wanted the fresh stuff. He was furious at himself for letting the demon unpick him. Lawrence should have just listened to Teddy. Avoided the demon at all costs, but he wasn't thinking with his head that evening. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ A double of him upstairs? That worried Remzi, and not a lot did━was Raik up there? He would’ve been happy to know his brother was letting down his hair for once and having some fun, but Remzi knew better. The club upstairs wasn’t Raik’s scene; he was probably there to collect the younger Durmaz, or see what he was up to, and what if he’d found his way downstairs? What if Raik put himself in danger?
Ah, fuck it. Whatever. Raik would be fine, especially if he got to bring home some chick.
He chuckled at the added ‘eh,’ grinning and not wanting to dive too deep into that whole ‘seeing double’ thing. The less this guy knew about who he was or how he was connected to Raik, the better. Remzi was prone to pissing people off, and if Raik had gone home with the wrong girl, then Remzi didn’t want the stranger finding Raik through him━especially if the ‘old age’ thing was serious. “Could be,” He added to smooth out the conversation, just before asking for the redhead.
And he was granted his first wish. As if she wasn’t a living, breathing human being, they passed her from vampire to vampire like a juice box, ensuring that she would be that for long. Remzi shifted the brunette off his lap and onto the couch, keeping her steady for a moment before he moved forward and encircled the redhead’s waist with his arm. He dragged her in close while sitting back down, and then propped both girls on his lap, one on each thigh, keeping them steady with his arms. “Who wants to go first?” A sing-songy, happy tone, one that didn’t fit the action it alluded to but still had the brunette squirming excitedly. The redhead barely reacted, though, just flopped back on his shoulder like a doll. Remzi bent his head and leaned into her, inhaling the smell of blood still splotched on her neck before sinking his fangs in. He could hear the brunette make a sound of disappointment, a childlike whine that had Remzi chuckling, pulling his head away to turn and bite her neck instead.
A moment later and he was switching back, draining the redhead until the last drop, sucking on the wound as if he could get any more out of her. She was gone; he couldn’t hear or feel her heart beating, and that rendered her useless to him. With a slight shove, the redhead toppled over and onto the floor, discarded like trash while Remzi took another mouthful of the brunette. He’d clean them up later.
But, with another vampire in his midst, Remzi thought of all the questions he had that he didn’t trust Leah with. Well, he couldn’t really trust Leah with anything, and somehow a stranger seemed like the better bet. Plus, Canadians were supposed to be friendly, weren’t they? Like, immune to lying or some shit. “Hey,” He began, trying to get the guy’s attention. Remzi pulled back a few inches from the girl, crimson smeared all over his mouth and into his beard. “Do you know anything about flipping your humanity switch?” Maybe it looked like Remzi’s was already off, what with the way he so carelessly dropped the girl to the ground, but it wasn’t. He still cared about some things, just not a lot.

Lawrence watched as the other male pulled both girls onto his knee. He was clearly amused by the scene that was unfolding alongside him. The vampire had his choice. Brunette or redhead. Or both. The redhead was still under Lawrence’s compulsion though and didn’t react to the question. That vacant look remained on her face as the other vampire sank his teeth into her neck. Finishing what Lawrence had started. The next minute the redhead’s body was crumpled at his feet. He sighed quietly, averting his gaze. Not wanting to look at the dead girl for longer than needed. Technically he hadn’t killed her, so he hadn’t broken his own promise. Not to kill anyone. The girl’s blood wasn’t on his hands that evening. He’d just started the process. He allowed his gaze to drift down the girl, her eyes still wide open. Void of life. He took a large sip of his drink before edging down to close the victim’s eyelids. It was disturbing to have a corpse staring back at you. The brunette remained alive, though her voice was like fingernails against a chalkboard. It was offensive to his ears and was hoping the other vampire would drain her quicker than the redhead so he could enjoy his drink in peace. His head twisted to the side as the male spoke, his face painted with the blood of his victim who’s annoying shrill had grown quieter, probably because she was bleeding out. It was irritating to find humans bled out faster than expected. Before he turned he thought it would take hours, but a picture to the right vein with his sharp teeth had them dead within minutes. “Do you know anything about flipping your humanity switch?”The simple word humanity switch made his stomach turn as sour liquor rushed back up his throat, threatening to spill out. The words forced him to remember his biggest regret. The one thing he kept to himself, not even sharing it with his sister or Teddy. Toying with that switch that lay deep inside him. He swallowed hard, taking a small breath. Lawrence frowned a little, somewhat concerned about the male’s question. If only he knew about the switch before flipping it. Rosie convinced him it was the best thing to do. She looked so carefree afterwards. All her grief and pain had simply disappeared just by wishing it gone. It was inviting for Lawrence. A way to shut off the pain for a few days, but once the emotions were gone there was no desire to turn them back on. He was just a hollow shell. Walking, talking, killing but there was nothing behind his eyes. “Yeah I do… why?” His amused expression from earlier had turned into something more serious, “If you’re thinking of doing it… don’t” If he could convince one vampire not to do it then he would be saving a lot of lives. Although the male didn’t seem to have much concern for humans in his current state, never mind after flipping the switch. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ Remzi should’ve been eager to get an opinion from all different viewpoints, but as the Canadian went soft at the question, he wished he hadn’t asked━nearly threw away the other vampire’s words before they left his lips. If it wasn’t what Remzi wanted to hear, then he wasn’t interested. Sometimes, he felt as if he had little humanity as a vampire to begin with, but the idea that he could get rid of it altogether? That seemed… fun. Equating ‘no humanity’ with ‘no consequences’ was probably dangerous within itself, but that’s who Remzi was. The only thing holding him back was his brother; Leah be damned. Maybe if he had no emotions, then she’d be the one trailing after him like a lost puppy. Not that he’d ever acted that way around her, though it certainly felt like it.
“Just wondering.” Remzi muttered, leaning back in for another few licks at the woman’s wound, fingers tightening around her hip. The allure of blood was greater than an answer to his question, though he still listened to the man, just took his time with responding. He couldn’t tell him he was ‘new at this,’ either, because that was another thing that might invite trouble, and Remzi wasn’t one to turn down a fight.
‘If you’re thinking of doing it… don’t.’
Remzi lingered at her neck, going and going until he felt her heartbeat slow. He tried to ease off, to control himself and just wait for a moment, but it was no use. He couldn’t. In seconds, she was gone, and he was left digging his fangs into unharmed spots on her neck, desperate for another drop more. It didn’t work, though, and she was left to drop on the floor just like the redhead.
With his lap now free, Remzi leaned back into the couch, wiping any excess blood off on his arm before both limbs dropped along the back of the furniture. He shifted in comfortably, blue eyes finding the other vampire. “Why not?” he asked finally, raising his brows. “Seems fun. Don’t have to worry about shit like that,” He motioned to the girls, glancing at them before smirking at his company. “Like wanting to close their eyes once they’re dead. Kind of useless, yeah? But you still did it… was it bothering you?” Remzi asked, eyes narrowing with intrigue, eager to pick the (seemingly) older vampire’s brain.

“Just wondering.”Blue eyes darted towards the male. Nobody just wonders what it’s like to flip that pesky switch. If only there was a dial to tone the emotions down a fraction, but not remove them completely. Both females were now gone. Lay in a heap on the floor as many had done before, but Lawrence was hoping his new acquaintance would clear up his mess. Although he too shared some blame in the mess. Pushing one of the females to the brink, before handing her over to the other vampire to finish the job. As though by doing so would rid him of any guilt of taking the life of another. It didn’t. The guilt remained buried deep down inside, but to be ignored for a while. At least for tonight. Lawrence relaxed back into the chair, reaching for his drink as he did so. He took a small sip, thinking about the list of reasons he could tell this stranger why not to switch off his humanity. “It is fun… more than fun in fact… it's freeing and exhilarating to have no emotions at all. You feel invincible because you’re not afraid of death or anything... nothing compares to having no emotions” He tapped one finger on the rim of his glass, as his eyes shifted onto the bodies on the floor, “No one likes glossed over eyes staring back at you” Like something out of a horror movie. It made him feel uncomfortable. A reminded him that the person who was once behind those eyes was no longer there. Drifting off into the abyss, waiting to be picked up by a reaper who would be here in no time. Though not a regular as they once were. The vampire shuffled in his seat, turning his body towards the male, “It’s the switching it back that’s the worst. You have so many emotions to process all at once… the sadness, the grief, the regret” Along with the consequences of your actions. Lawrence had to come to terms with the fact he’d killed people. Lots of people. It was something he struggled to comprehend even now. Part of refusing to believe he could be that ruthless. Dropped bodies like they were nothing and snatching away people’s lives in an instance. “You also need someone in your life who connects you to your humanity. Someone who can bring you back because once it’s off you never want to switch it back off. I thought I was switching mine off for a few days and I could just turn it back as I pleased” He wasn’t lucky enough to have someone there for him. Someone to remind him what it meant to be human. Instead, it took a pregnant lady and her unborn son's room to force it back on. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ If this guy was trying to convince Remzi not to flip his switch, he was doing a pretty shitty job of it. The younger vampire didn’t have much guilt or resentment to begin with━he knew his actions were idiotic most of the time, but he learned not to dwell on them. Couldn’t change the past, so what was the point in controlling your future? Sometimes humans just needed to be drained; they were food, after all, weren’t they? Vampires surely kept up some kind of balance.
Plus, Raik was goody-goody enough for the both of them.
Remzi barked out a laugh, tossing his head back as he did, “Sounds fucking amazing, man,” And as he lifted it back up and tipped his blue gaze to the girls on the floor, Remzi couldn’t relate. Sure, it was somewhat strange━being in the company of dead bodies and all━but he didn’t feel a lot of guilt. And it wasn’t as if he could pretend they were just sleeping if their eyes were closed instead. It didn’t make much of a difference, and that shallow turn in his stomach would be the only thing erased if he were to switch off his emotions━or at least that’s what he figured.
Switching it back on sounded like shit, though. Remzi didn’t like dealing with his emotions at the best of times, but a whole shitload of them coming at one time like a fucking tidal wave? That sounded awful. He wasn’t sure he was going to do it, anyway, it was just some sort of morbid curiosity picking at him━especially considering Leah didn’t like spilling everything about being a vampire, far more keen on listening to Remzi retell stories about the nights he fucked up.
‘You also need someone in your life who connects you to your humanity…’
Raik was that person, he thought, better than Remzi in pretty much every way. It definitely wasn’t Leah. While he had tons of fun with her, excited to dive into that bad side of the creature he’d become, he knew she wasn’t good for him━not in the way that Raik would be. That didn’t make him like her less or deter Remzi from seeing her, but when he was honest with himself, he knew.
“So, I’m guessing that’s not what happened.” Remzi chuckled somewhat sarcastically, eyeing the spot of dried blood on his arm. He licked his thumb and rubbed at it, then repeated the process until it was gone, and he’d taken every last drop. And still, he wasn’t satisfied.
Standing, he glanced at the girls again, nudging one of them lamely with his foot, then back to the other vampire. “How old are you, huh?” Remzi asked, nodding upwards, “You know anywhere else I can get a drink this late? ‘Cause this place is dead as fuck,” Peering around, Remzi frowned at the near-empty interior and classy furniture, definitely not his type of place. But Leah brought him here, and it was better than dragging out some chick from upstairs.

As the words flowed out of his mouth he realised he was almost selling the no humanity life to the other vampire. Shit, he didn’t want to be responsible for some vampire going on a killing spree because Lawrence told him it was freeing. But with every up there had to be a down. He’d never been too good with words though, always saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. A nervous laugh left Lawrence, “Um” It was amazing, but he couldn’t say that, “It’s not worth it” A small knot formed in his stomach as he thought about it. The first few weeks were the best, but soon he was so numb that if someone rammed a stake into his chest he wouldn’t have flinched. He didn’t even care about Rosie, or their relationship. The one person he declared his love to was nothing more than a travel companion. The person who sat silently alongside him as they travelled across the west coast in their stolen van. Two humanity free vampires really didn’t have a lot to discuss, apart from when their next meal was going to be and whether they should ambush the poor woman at the gas station filling her car at 1am. The answer was usually yes with no concern if this woman had a family waiting for her at home. He rarely gave them time to plead for their life, because it was only going to end one way and meaningless babble in the middle was pointless. Sometimes Rosie would pretend she was going to spare their life if they gave her a good enough story, but never did. At least Lawrence didn’t play with his victims. It was over quick and fast for them. When he arrived in New Orleans some of the older vampires would tell him a humanity free vampire is their true form, but Lawrence refused to believe that. Refused to accept he could be so callous and merciless towards strangers. He knew deep down that wasn’t him and he spent years thereafter trying to prove to himself it wasn’t. Proving he was one of the good guys when he wanted to be. Lawrence shook his head in response to the vampire’s comment, “Nah I didn’t have anyone. I only switched it back on when I realised I was about to kill a pregnant woman… she was weeks from giving birth” It was the baby's room that pushed him over the edge. Everything was so set out and ready for the arrival of this baby. “Once you let one emotion in you’re screwed. They all come back” It was like a door that had been wedged shut and the feeling of guilt started to push away at the door until it finally flung open. Blue eyes followed the male as he stood up, relieved to move the conversation on to something different. Something less depressing. “104. Died when I was 19. I’m guessing you're fairly new at this?” Consuming every last drop of blood was usually a tell-tale sign. Even licking the dry parts of his arm, making sure not to waste any of it. Lawrence finished his drink, getting to his feet. The bar was quieter than usual, but he wasn’t complaining. “How do you feel about college parties? My sister invited me to one tonight. They’re usually pretty wild… college kids really know how to party” They certainly drank more than he did when he was their age, but he’d been given the chance to do it all over again. “We can stop off at my apartment to pick up some drinks because last time I went there the alcohol had been laced with vervain” REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ ‘I only switched it back on when I realised I was about to kill a pregnant woman… she was weeks from giving birth.’
“Kafayı üşüttü,” Remzi muttered, shaking his head. He didn’t have a lot of morals, and maybe if he was in the same situation, he’d find excuses for himself, but hearing it as a second-hand experience was jarring. It was probably the shittiest thing someone could do, he thought, but there was something intriguing about feeding on a pregnant chick. Like, did it taste different? You probably didn’t have to kill them, and there was that whole stem cell thing.
He shook the thought loose. If there was anything he could do to have his family completely give up on him, it was that.
“But if your emotions are off, how does one get in?” Remzi scoffed like he didn’t believe Lawrence, though there had to be an edge to everything, a way back in, even if Remzi didn’t think of it. You couldn’t stay emotionless forever, not unless you were a giant piece of shit.
Hey, maybe he could pull it off.
One hundred and fucking four. Fuck sake. Remzi’s brows shot up, a low scoff trailing out of him. “And you never get bored of it? Like… you never thought about just ending?” He was asking seriously, though there was a bit of douchiness in every word he spoke, and this was no exception. “Yeah.” Was all he offered in response to the guy’s question. He wasn’t going to go around flaunting the fact that he was a little out of control and didn’t know what he was doing, not to mention the reaper on his back that tried to dictate his every move. Remzi was sure he could take this little vampire bitch if vampire rules weren’t involved, but they were, and who knew what kind of other shit Leah had held back from him.
“College bitches? Fuck yeah.” With newfound purpose, Remzi jumped to his feet, ignoring the girls on the floor. “Yeah, whatever, sounds good.” He nearly asked what the fuck that was━vervain━but saved it for another time. He’d ask Leah if he remembered, get pissed that she didn’t tell him, and they’d spend all night “fighting” over it. That was a much better outcome than revealing to a hundred-year-old random that he didn’t know what ‘vervain’ was.
