“Motherfu-” Kitty quickly took her headset off and discarded it on the table. She was sitting in a coffee shop in Mystic Falls, trying to find the game she had purchased a few weeks ago, which she quickly found herself addicted to. She was so close to finishing the game, with only one level standing between her and the end. While being glued to her screen, time had slipped away. It was drawing close to 3am, and the caffeine was slowly wearing off, leaving Kitty feeling weary. Her finger hovered over the restart button, tempted to start a new game. Another coffee would keep her awake until at least 4am, but the sensible option was to close her laptop and head back to campus for a few hours of sleep before college the following day. With a heavy sigh, she closed the laptop, determined to finish the game tomorrow even if it meant spending a fortune in the coffee shop and staying up all night. The coffee shop had successfully drawn her in with their reliable wifi, to which she was now a regular customer, though her bank balance was not happy about this. The wifi back in her dorm constantly lagged and just wasn’t up to speed for her gaming. Kitty shut the lid on her laptop and settled back into her seat as she finished the last few sips of her coffee, which was now freezing cold. She pulled her phone out to check for any messages, but there was nothing, which was not a surprise given the hour. Even though she had been at Whitmore College for a while now, she was still relishing in her newfound freedom and living independently. No one was there to tell her to switch off and go to bed or lecture her on having cake for breakfast, nor did she have her grandmother lingering behind her, saying she didn’t understand the point of games and technology. Kitty's focus was broken away from her laptop for the first time in hours, and she was now glancing around the coffee to see what night owls were out and about at such an hour. As always, there were only a few people, but the young wolf did notice another girl sitting in the corner of the coffee shop. The same girl she’d seen for the past week. It wasn’t uncommon to see the same faces, but this wasn’t doing anything in particular, no laptop, no homework, no book— nothing. Kitty bundled her laptop into her bag, picked her belongings and wandered over to the lone girl, “Hey! You okay?” She gave the girl a friendly smile as she drew closer, “Sorry if I’m intruding. I was sat over there and saw you were on your own, so I was wondering do you want some company?” She gestured towards the free seat, “Oh and you can totally say no, I won’t be upset”KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ Krista thought running away would be exciting and rejuvenating, a chance at freedom and to find answers to all her questions. What she didn’t factor in, however, was that she had little to no money, was running out of clothes, and didn’t have a place to stay. For the past three nights, she was too wired to sleep, excited for her journey back to Mystic Falls. Tonight, though she thought of nothing but Mr. Tall, Dark and Brooding from Campbell’s Bar, her body ached for sleep. Usually, she could drop her head on the table and pass out for an hour without raising any alarms, but it was different tonight. She was sore all over, probably bleeding through her bra and shirt from her newest bite, and also incredibly satisfied. That dull feeling spread through her body, excited for the latest feats she could accomplish, ticking imaginary boxes off her list of not-so-innocent things.
With her eyes barely open, fingers loosely curled around her sugary drink, Krista dipped her chin to her chest, trying to breathe him in again. Her peach-pink hoodie protected any blood from seeping through to the outside, and she’d cleaned all the crusty, dried blood flakes off in the bathroom, but all Krista sought was the scent of him and if it still lingered on her skin. She’d never let anybody touch her like that; nobody had seen her without clothing before. Not even a bikini━those weren’t conservative enough; Krista only wore one-piece bathing suits.
But he’d done… everything. They’d done everything.
And it was so much better than she could’ve ever imagined.
She tilted her head back up, cheek propped up on her palm with her elbow on the table, and lifted the drink to take a sip. The frappuccino was a melted mess by then, still mostly sugar and ice than coffee, which was what she liked. Coffee was pretty gross━as she’d discovered during her first night in Mystic Falls. Krista swallowed the mouthful and managed to put the drink down before her eyes were falling shut and her head slipped from her hand, nearly bouncing off the table’s surface. She caught herself just before, a sharp intake of breath coming between her teeth while she straightened back up. Krista breathed out, blinking a few times quickly, trying to keep her eyes wide open━as if that would erase how exhausted she was.
‘Hey! You okay?’
Krista turned her sleepy, hazel eyes sideways and up to the girl coming close, a small smile automatically stretching her lips. “Hi! Yeah, I’m okay. Thank you for asking.” She yawned, desperately trying to keep her eyes open as she did, one hand curling around her mouth to cover it politely.
“Sure!” Krista beamed once she finished yawning, motioning to the seat across from her in the little booth, finding the long seats a lot more comfortable than any single chairs. “Company will probably keep me from falling asleep, so yeah, totally welcome.” She giggled, taking another sip of her drink. “I’m Krista! It’s nice to meet you. Do you… have lots of homework or something?” Her gaze ticked to the girl’s bag, and then back to her face. She looked nice enough, probably just around Krista’s age, which made the girl immediately trustworthy for some reason. She didn’t look like a threat, and she was here pretty much every night, so it wasn’t like she’d just randomly appeared. Krista’s mind went to potential new friendship before anything else━even though she’d just met a real-life vampire a few hours earlier.

Playing gaming probably wasn't the best way to keep her anger under wraps, finding herself taking a deep breath every time she died in the game, but she refused to let this curse control every aspect of her life. It had already taken so much from her. Every full moon her body is forced to contort into an animal until the sun rose the following morning. The days in between weren't as painful though and some days it was easy to forget she was something else. Kit had explained to her that she needed an 'an anchor', something to keep her human in those moments she felt herself losing control, but it was hard to focus on anything but the anger when she was riled up in that way. The full moon had just passed, so she had a few weeks to figure out this whole anchor thing, but she was burying her head in the sand that evening. Finding comfort in her video games, until she noticed another female sat alone. One who looked like she didn't have any particular reason to be in the coffee shop. Kitty tended to have an urge to push herself onto other people, even strangers in coffee shops who looked like they were about to pass out from sleep deprivation. She wasn't naive as such, just driven by the need for human interaction. The world wasn't full of good people with kind souls, but she would try her damn best to pick out the best ones. Even as a child, she kept her spirits high, refusing to take off her rose-coloured glasses at times, but her dad was an example that evil can lurk deep within people. Growing up her grandmother often referred to her father as being an evil person. Someone was damaged beyond repair— someone who didn't deserve to be forgiven by the Ryo girls for killing their mom. Kitty had tried so hard to forgive her dad, but it was impossible. The man never showed a shred of guilt even years after it happened. He remained tight-lipped about the fateful evening, refusing to tell anyone, not even the girls, what happened. It was unusual to find another lone female out in the early hours of the morning. Perhaps if it was a male, Kitty wouldn't have bounced over to introduce herself. She wondered if the stranger was so exhausted why she was sitting in a coffee shop fighting the need for sleep. Kitty grinned as the girl invited her to take the free seat. Plonking herself down, the wolf dropped her bags to the floor. "I'm Kitty" She responded, settling herself into the chair, "Oh shit yeah, I have so much coursework to do, but I'm not here for that. Been playing video games instead" Skewed priorities, but she still had weeks before her final deadline however, Kitty would do what she always does. Put it off until the last moment, then freak out. "How about you?" It was clear the blonde wasn’t here for college work though, with no laptop or books scattered on the table. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ Krista was excited about making new friends. Her old ones back home, the Church group, probably couldn’t be considered friends anymore, not after they’d left her behind that night in Mystic Falls and practically ratted her out to her parents. They were the only reason she had a clue, Campbell’s Bar, but still… traitors. She could’ve gotten really hurt there━she did get really hurt there, and what did they do? Abandon her.
Maybe making friends in Mystic Falls would be better. Maybe this girl wouldn’t be so bad, despite their meeting circumstances.
… And maybe Krista was being gullible again.
Krista moved both elbows to the table, put her arms together, and propped her chin on her palms, smiling at the newcomer. She beamed expectantly, already intrigued despite barely starting the conversation. Perhaps being so over-tired gave her another spark of energy, like she would drop her head on the table at any moment.
‘I'm Kitty.’
Krista’s eyes went wide, lifting her head an inch or two while her mouth opened, giving Kitty the biggest smile she could muster up. She gasped quietly, “Your parents named you Kitty? That’s so cool. I love that; I wish I had an awesome name.” She’d never met anybody with a unique name, come to think of it. Maybe her brother, River, was about as unusual as it got for their small Church community. People just generally didn’t have names like that. Kitty probably wasn’t from Mystic Falls, Krista deduced. Nobody gave their kids cool names like that around here. “Hey! We can be the K-girls. Double K. Kool with a K.” Yeah, she was seriously sleep deprived.
Another yawn came, and with it another polite covering of her mouth, trying to ensure she wouldn’t be rude despite how ecstatic she was becoming. Ecstatically exhausted.
“Oh yeah? What kinda video games?” Krista had never been interested in them and always thought they were more of a boy thing━though, that was boys outside of their house. They played outside with their friends, never spent a day indoors if the sun was shining, and even then, they had board games to keep themselves entertained. As she got older (she wouldn’t call herself an ‘adult’), Krista still never found any interest in them. But, if her new friend did, then she’d try.
On the high from another laugh after Kitty’s statement, Krista shrugged, unfolding her arms to take another watery sip. “Hmmm,” She hummed pensively with her mouth full, nodding slowly and swallowing. “Just… uh, trying to not fall asleep.” A sheepish laugh followed, hazel eyes darting to the table. She didn’t want to risk getting found out, even if this girl was her new bestie. “Don’t really wanna go home. I can’t afford much more than a coffee, though, so I figured it would be easier to try to stay awake than get a motel room.” Krista paused, then added quickly, “Just for tonight.” Unaware that this girl had seen her here before (since Krista didn’t remember her) and sincerely hoping Kitty hadn’t.
She didn’t want to be saved. Or… maybe she did, though that wish was secret and buried deep under layers of forced rebelliousness.
“Do you go to Whitmore? My brother━uh, what’re you taking?” She nearly mentioned River as a way to say, ‘hey, I won’t stalk you or anything, I just have a personal connection to the college!’ but then she thought of Kitty knowing River, and she sure as heck didn’t want him to find her and drag her home.

If only her parents had called her Kitty. She broke into a smile at the other girl’s comment, “I wish. My real name is Kitana but everyone calls me Kitty… easier for the staff at Starbucks too” Even then they managed to get her name wrong. A selection of different names every time she went. Kitty had asked her grandmother a few times why she was called Kitana, but it was a mystery. Her sisters told her she was named after a character in the video game Mortal Kombat, which was cool as hell if it were true, though it wasn’t as if she could confirm that with her parents. One lay six feet deep and the other in prison with no contact with the Ryo girls. “Yea! Like, watch out everyone Double K are in town ready to kick some ass”] The ‘kool’ girls. Kitty liked that, which was evident by the huge grin she had on her face. It sounded like some unstoppable duo you’d find in a supernatural hero film. Kitty was aware that most girls never find video games all that interesting, so she was cautious not to ramble on about them in the same way she would with her coursemates. It was a great way to escape reality even just for a few hours. Pretend to someone else somewhere else. With video games, she felt like the possibilities were endless, but not everyone got that. “Outlast? It’s a horror game set in an abandoned psychiatric hospital” Playing the game in a brightly lit coffee shop kind of removed the horror aspect from the game. “Oh…” A trace of sadness laced into her comment. She couldn’t imagine not wanting to go home. Home to her was a fluffy blanket draped over her on a cold day. A place she was safe, at least it was once she moved in with her grandmother. There was nothing safe about her house when she lived with her parents. Heated arguments and violent outbursts, but she was too young to remember everything, instead stuck with unpleasant fractured memories. But her grandmother’s house was everything she ever wanted. Warm, cosy and homey “Why don’t you want to go home?” Hesitate to ask, but perhaps Krista needed someone to talk to. Kitty knew the other female’s comment about it being just one night was a lie, but she wasn’t about to call her out on it. “Yeah! I’m studying games and interactive media design. I basically play on a laptop trying to design shit like apps. Do you go Whitmore?” It wasn’t uncommon to come across an unfamiliar face as the campus was huge. Everyone blurred into each other and the only people Kitty had socialized with so far were her coursemates and a few from the dorms. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ Krista giggled, leaning into the table as she did so, loving Kitty’s Starbucks joke. Even if she weren’t over-tired, it would’ve been hilarious to her, and she was settling even more than she had before, completely unafraid of Kitty. Of her new friend. Her stomach ached with the amount of laughing she was doing, though, the sound only increasing when they gave their dynamic duo a nickname. Krista went from being wary to getting attached in only a few seconds flat, hopeful that Kitty would be a true friend. Or maybe just somebody to talk to during late, sleepless nights in the coffee shop━because Krista would surely be back.
‘Outlast? It’s a horror game set in an abandoned psychiatric hospital.’
Even the idea of it had Krista shaking in her boots. She frowned, wondering why anybody would want to play something like that. Krista didn’t even like horror movies━though, was letting a real-life vampire chew on her any different? In her mind, it was. And Mal really wasn’t so scary━not after she got to know him. “They make horror video games?” She asked, wrapping her arms around her chest in a hug, attempting to self-soothe as if Kitty was playing it right in front of her eyes. “That sounds… kinda terrifying. How does that even work? Is it like a scary movie, but you do the missions instead? Are there lots of jump scares?” Kitty seemed pretty cool. She could probably handle stuff like that. Krista, on the other hand? She’d be crying within seconds.
She should’ve known the words ‘I don’t really wanna go home’ would bring on this reaction and probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say. What if Kitty had seen the ‘Missing Person’ flyers put up all over town? Krista took down all the ones she could find, but… what if River was helping out their parents by putting some up? Were there any at Whitmore? She seriously hoped not. If there had been, Kitty probably would’ve recognized her by now, right? Or this conversation would only jog her memory.
Krista decided that treading lightly was her best option. “Uh… my parents and I just had a… well,” She sighed heavily, dropping her arms back to the table and meeting Kitty’s eye, breathing as if she could release all her stress through it. “Okay, so, like, I got home, and I didn’t know what was going on; apparently I was out all night, and I couldn’t remember. But that’s not like me━I’ve never been to a party or anything like that. But when I said I couldn’t remember, my parents and my brother didn’t believe me. And I don’t lie. I would never lie to them. Then they just kept saying, ‘Oh, it’s okay no matter what happened, just tell us’ and they were trying to be nice, but it just got super irritating. I don’t know how I could lose a chunk of my memory, but I did.” She rolled her eyes downwards, landing on her drink. Was it Mal that first time around, too? Probably. The reason she’d come back to Mystic Falls and… the reason she’d stay, too. She wasn’t finished with him yet. He was her first taste at freedom, at being an adult, and Krista wasn’t ready to give that up.
‘... Do you go Whitmore?’
“Ohhhh,” She laughed, “So that’s why you even like scary games. ‘Cause it’s your job━or gonna be. That’s really cool!” Krista couldn’t imagine her parents being happy with that study field if it were her or River. They were supportive and loving━she knew that even if she was mad at them right now━and they probably wouldn’t say anything about it, maybe just push into other jobs. Or do some research of their own and decide how probable it was that their kids would succeed and how much money they’d make in the field.
She took another sip of her drink and shook her head, finishing off the bits of liquid and melty whipped cream at the bottom. “No,” Krista spoke finally, after she leaned back and swallowed down the rest. “I’m kinda new to Mystic Falls. I’ve been to… Campbell’s Bar and here, and that’s about it.” She laughed. It didn’t seem like a lot, but the bar opened up a million new experiences for her.
“What year are you in?” She asked, “Have you made any games or apps or anything? Like, for projects? How do you even do that? There’s gotta be a lot of coding and stuff, right?” Krista raised her brows, “Whoa, you’re probably a genius, aren’t you?”

Krista’s laugh was contagious, causing Kitty to laugh along with her, though she wasn’t sure what they were even laughing at by this point. Nonetheless, it felt good to click with someone. Since moving from Atlanta she had only made a few friends here and there but opted to keep most at a safe distance. Worried they’d somehow discover she was a wolf or even worse she’d hurt them. Plus she had her sisters. They were always on the other end of the phone if needed. The frown on the other girl’s face sparked another chuckle from Kitty. She nodded her head in response to her initial question, a smile still apparent on her face, “They’re not that scary unless you’re playing VR” She raised her hands, mimicking putting a helmet on, “Yeah you get missions and you have to complete the missions before going onto the next level… some have jump scares yeah but it’s all part of fun!” She insisted. Personally, she loved it when a game had a jump, causing adrenaline to pump through her body. Kitty balanced her elbows on the table, leaning her chin on her palms as Krista went on to explain why she didn’t want to go home. The other girl’s story sounded familiar to her first shift. Waking up the next morning not remembering anything. “Where did you wake up that morning?” Was it a woodland area? Was she naked? Was this girl a wolf too? “But hang on a minute… you’ve never been to a party?” That was the most shocking part of the story. The girl appeared to be around Kitty’s age, so she assumed everyone their age was out at parties, since they couldn’t actually go to a bar. She paused for a minute, before breaking into another warm smile, “You should totally come to a college party with me! They’re so much fun… little bit wild but fun” Her tone was full of excitement as she spoke. She had no idea what the future held for her, only choosing her course because it was something she enjoyed. Kitty lived her life day by day, with no real plans in place. Her life was planned to the end of the week and that was about it. Every time she allowed herself to think about the future she would spiral. Overthinking the fact she was a werewolf and it was a permanent affliction. She still wasn’t sure how she was supposed to lead a normal life like this. “My dream job would be making video games” She admitted, her mind wandering to that dream for just a second. The thought of being surrounded by big fancy computers with multiple screens whilst she sat designing games. It was something she hoped for. Quickly she broke out of her thoughts. “I’m fairly new too… well I’ve been here a year but I’m originally from Atlanta” She beamed. Something else the girls could bond over, to which she was ecstatic about. “Campell’s bar is pretty chilled. There’s also the Ruby Slipper which is the only nightclub in this town, but it’s pretty cool. They sometimes have some awesome bands playing too!” Whether it be a club night or a live music night Kitty was happy to be rocking in the crowd with high energy levels. Along with games, music had a special place in her heart. “Junior year but going into senior soon!” She responded, as she removed her elbows from the table, settling back into the chair, “Well, I made a mock app for one of my classes. It was a food app. So like cafes and shit that had leftover food at the end of the day you can buy it at a cheaper price… it mainly involved market research and a bit of coding. I think next year we are going to look at actually building the app!” She laughed at Krista’s comment before shaking her head, “Nah I’m no genius. Computers are about the only thing I’m good at” She admitted, with a grin. Kitty shuffled in her seat for a moment, pondering, “So, um” She paused for a second, “I know this sounds a bit weird but my roommate dropped out of college months ago soI have a free bed in my dorm room… if you don’t feel like going home tonight?”KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ While Krista appreciated the explanation, it didn’t make much sense to her. She smiled and nodded along politely anyway, doing her best to listen despite her current state. Her sleep-deprived brain couldn’t pick up whatever it was that Kitty was putting down, but she tried her best.
‘Where did you wake up that morning?’
“Oh… uh,” Krista frowned lightly. Obviously, she hadn’t done the best job of telling her story; otherwise Kitty would’ve understood. She did appreciate, however, that Kitty didn’t just immediately call her a liar. Mal was the only one who’d done that before her, though he knew what was going on. Was Kitty a vampire, too? “My last memory is actually of later that night. Like, I was only out for a few hours. I got back home and━and I was kinda, like, bleeding a little. I had no idea what happened, and neither did they.” Krista released a heavy breath with her story, trying to get it all out. She knew the facts now━or, at least, could piece them together. She’d gone to Campbell’s, met a vampire, and he fed on her. It was so simple and so outlandish all at once.
“Nope! We weren’t really allowed to go out like that, I mean, I could hang out with people, obviously, but none of our friends had crazy parties. And my dad’s the town Pastor, so everybody knows him. Kinda hard with all that.” She laughed, though it only took a moment before Krista was using up all her reserved energy on another big smile, shifting excitedly in her seat. “I’d love to! That sounds awesome, thank you!” She really hoped it would actually be a thing they did, though, and not just a one-and-done ‘we should totally do it!’ where it’s never revisited.
Krista was still trying to listen, and she was truly interested in Kitty’s explanation. But her eyelids began to droop, feeling heavier than they had only moments ago, and it took a few hard blinks before she could successfully open them again. “Sorry,” She croaked, giving Kitty a soft smile. “That sounds really awesome. It’ll help get rid of a lot of waste and stuff, and━” One hand lifted to cover her mouth as she yawned. “━you’ll get a lot of experience. S’honestly really cool. I hope you get to build it. I’ll be the first person to install it,” Krista giggled, taking a few more slow blinks to keep herself upright.
‘I know this sounds a bit weird but my roommate dropped out of college months ago so I have a free bed in my dorm room…’
Well, that certainly got her to perk up. Hazel eyes widened a little more, going ramrod straight in her chair, a tired grin spreading across her lips. “That… that would be amazing,” Tears started to well up in her vision, though the warmth in her cheeks made it obvious she was actually crying, and not just tearing up from all the yawning. “You’re so sweet. I’m… really, really glad we met. I hope that’s not weird to say, either. I also hope we can be friends, ‘cause you seem awesome.” Krista giggled, “Do… would you mind if we go now? I’m super thankful, and I don’t wanna push you; I’m just really tired, and I don’t know how much longer I’m gonna last.” Smiling sheepishly, she began to slip out of the booth anyway, collecting her cup and backpack behind her. At the least, she’d throw it out, and if Kitty didn’t want to leave just yet, then Krista didn’t have much choice; she’d stay. But she really hoped she wouldn’t have to, because if there was ever a time Krista felt like she could pass out standing up, it was right at that moment.

Kitty frowned a little at Krista’s recollection of her evening, but didn’t want to press the subject too much. The girl was clearly sleep deprived, “They say ignorance is bliss... sometimes” She joked, with a shrug. A phrase she often lived by when she refused to delve too deep into the world of the supernatural. She was happy paddling at the surface knowing the bare minimum, as it was terrifying to think about what lurked below. Every time her sisters tried to tell her she’d close her ears. The less she knew, the better. There was a trace of understanding for Kitty in the other girl’s comment. Her grandmother too would lecture the girls for hours if they came home too late from a night out. Of course, her version of too late was 9pm, but she was no longer confined by the rules set by her grandmother. Free to do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted, which included late night wild parties. It was exhilarating, but it was moments like this that it was evident her life was following no real schedule. Her sleeping pattern was a shambles and she ate at all hours of the day, including drinking caffeine at 3am. No doubt the lifestyle would grow boring soon and she’d crave a routine. She nodded, excited that Krista would love to join her at the next college party. The sleep was catching up with Kitty too, as her eyelids started to become heavy. She yawned seconds after Krista, quickly drawing her hand up to cover her mouth. The caffeine was rapidly wearing off and her eyes started to burn, which was caused by a mixture of exhaustion and staring at her laptop screen for too long. “We can totally be friends! We're double K!” She beamed, a friendly smile spread across her face to match her tone. The whole reason she moved away from Atlanta was to try and branch out. Meet new people, make new friends. Her school friends had all drifted apart in recent years, some throwing themselves into relationships or others moving far away for college. Apparently, it was all part of getting older or so her grandmother would say, but Kitty hated it. Once she called someone a friend, she aimed to keep them as a friend forever even when life got in the way at times. “Yeah sure. I’m falling asleep as well” She collected her belongings off the floor, sliding out the booth as well, “I’ll get some spare bedding out too as you’re not just sleeping on the mattress” She swung her bag over her shoulder, as she made her way towards the door, holding it open for Krista.
