At times the past had been an anvil around his neck, threatening to choke him. At others what had been good had been all that had kept him afloat. Curled up in a corner of some crappy motel room as the room shook and swam around him, flashes of light from some car pulling a U-turn out in the lot leaving him adrift in whatever was wrong inside of his head until one of those good memories had tossed itself out of the bad like a life jacket, keeping him afloat until he could start kicking again. Those barbecues, Toni throwing herself into his arms each time he’d come back – including that penultimate time, when the tears had flooded from both of them, that last night before he’d driven the final nail into their marriage. Little bursts of light and hope in the dark that now had him laughing in agreement with his daughter, the sound not feeling so rusty this time. ”Big time,” Marc admitted. He looked at his daughter as she tapped her finger against her temple. ”I’m pretty sure it would be a disaster if I tried, but … I’d like that.” His kid showing him how to cook, it was another mule kick to the chest.
There were plenty jolting him today, plenty that would find his daughter even once she thought she’d started to move on from what had happened to her. It wasn’t what he wanted to be guiding her through in life – a nightmare to bond over instead of something happy. What was spilling out of his mouth seemed to be helping though and that loosened a knot in Marc’s chest as he nodded. ”It is,” he admitted hoarsely. ”I don’t know if your mom explained, but some bad things happened before we … separated. I didn’t handle them as well as I should’ve done. It took me a long time to learn how to and it’s still something I’m working on.” Now maybe he had a chance to show Toni that. Wherever she went with Ria now, he was going too, even if that was as just a dad and nothing more. Marc nodded, his hand finding his daughter’s to squeeze it. ”I mean it. I’m not going anywhere now honey. I’m sure your mom’s gonna do whatever it takes to make you feel safe. She’ll find you guys a new house.” In a new city if she had to. He hadn’t seen Toni as Ria’s mom, but he knew what she was like when she loved you and that love would drive her to protect Ria.
Toni had been right to encourage Ria to trust herself. She’d drawn on that strength to get herself out of a bad situation and her mom would be so glad of that. If only he’d listened as hard when Toni had pushed him to see what he was doing to himself. All of this now might prove to be too much pressure, but for Ria’s sake, he was going to do whatever he could to handle it. The hint of a smile became a full one as she called him dad for the first time. ”Dad’s fine,” he promised. ”I like hearing it.” It spread that warmth in his chest. He was someone’s father. It was another anchor, like the one that still tied him to Toni, and kept him sane when that all wanted to flee on the full moon. His first flattened against his chest, his fingers rubbing slowly like it would keep it all ingrained in his heart. ”You will, Ria. It’s gonna be easier soon, I promise.” He’d guide her like his own family had, those memories dusted off, altered slightly with his own daughter.
They weren’t gonna be able to start building all of that here, not with the officer returning to finally announce that Ria could go. Marc shook the guy’s hand, made certain that they had his number. Toni was going to demand it when she got here to the station and learned that her daughter had gone with her father. Keeping his daughter’s hand in his, Marc headed for the front door of the station, holding it for Ria to slip through before he led the way to his truck. ”I guess that all depends on whether or not you inherited your old man’s love of good burgers. The Grill’s the number one spot in town, but we’ve got a coffee shop and a diner too.” And a million other take out places that he’d become way too familiar with since he’d arrived.

Ria had always wanted to meet her dad, her mom had never said anything bad about him but she had gotten the impression that there was a lot of hurt there between them. That hadn’t stopped Ria from wondering about what the man was like even though she had heard stories about him and right now it felt like this was all nothing more than a dream. She had been held captive for so long that she was sure that when she woke up she would be back in that house again and she would find out that none of this had really happened but if this was a dream then it was one that she really didn’t want to wake up from. Her mom had been called and she didn’t doubt that she would be on her way right now but until then she had her dad with her and the truth was that Ria finally felt safe. Ria shook her head in amusement as her dad agreed with her, she wasn’t too sure how she had thought it might go when she finally got to meet him one day but it had to be said that this was so much better than she had ever thought that it would be and she knew that she wanted to make the most of every moment. “It won’t, I’ll make sure of it,” she assured him with a smile, certain that together they would be able to make it. So much had changed in such a short space of time and even though a lot of it was for the better, the truth was that it was still overwhelming. Ria had loved the life she’d had with her mom but she had been ripped away from it and now she wasn’t sure how to start over but she knew that she needed to give herself time. As he spoke again, Ria’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “She told me a little about how you broke up but she didn’t give me too many details,” Ria admitted. She wasn’t sure whether it had been too painful for her mom to relive it or whether her mom had simply wanted to protect her from it but either way she knew that she was old enough to hear the truth now. “I’m sorry you went through all of that,” she said, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “You seem to be doing better now though.” He was here and that was something that she had started to think might never happen. “I hope so. I feel bad for even thinking about asking mom to leave our home but I just can’t go back there,” she breathed. She knew that the memories would come flooding back to her and that was the last thing she wanted. She wasn’t even sure if she would be able to bring herself to go back to Quantico but she knew that she just had to take it one step at a time. “There’s a part of me that hopes we might be able to stay here. I know the guy is still out there but I imagine he’s probably long gone by now and this is your home,” she added. That was what she was hoping for at least but whether or not it would happen was another matter entirely. Ria knew that there was so much that had to be worked out but for the time being her dad was here and she was grateful to him for that. Ria had only had herself to rely on to get out of the situation she had been thrown into in the end but now it was a relief to be around people she knew she was safe with. She hadn’t meant for the word to slip out of her mouth, she had called him daddy when she had seen him but it had been low enough that she was pretty sure he hadn’t heard it. This time hadn’t been intentional and she instantly felt guilty for throwing that at him but she felt a smile touch her lips as he said that dad was fine and he liked hearing it. “You do?” she asked as she lifted her gaze to meet his. “Dad it is then.” It was something that she hadn’t said too much in the past but now she could without feeling guilty and it felt like a weight had been lifted. There was a lot in her life that was out of her control right now but that at least was something she could hold onto. “I believe you,” she nodded as her dad said it would be easier soon. “Mom told me a bit about what it would be like if I did take after you but last night wasn’t like anything I could have imagined.” The pain was something that would stay with her but there was also the sense of feeling free when she was in her panther form and was able to run. Watching her dad with the officer, she really wasn’t sure what her mom would make of it when she found out that Ria had gone with her dad but it would be hours before her mom got there and Ria knew that it would be much better than hanging around the police station waiting for her to arrive. She couldn’t wait to see her mom but she needed to get out of there and now she had the chance to do that. Her hand stayed in her dad’s as they headed outside and she offered him a smile as he held the door open for her. “Thank you,” she said gently before slipping through and following him in the direction of his truck. As he gave her the options, Ria couldn’t help but laugh. “I’d pick a burger every time so the Grill it is.”MARC FRASER

Marc wasn’t sure when the astonishment was going to settle, if he ever wanted it to settle. Most parents had close to a year to plan for their future before their kids arrived. He’d had ten minutes of confusion as he’d driven from the job he’d’ been on to the station – not enough time to even start believing that maybe he had fathered a kid, let alone imagine a future where his kid would get to teach him out to cook, where he’d take her for dinner and go to PTA meetings. Where the word family could actually come into things. The astonishment was a bubble under his diaphragm, leaving him sounding a little breathless as he nodded at Ria. ”I’m sure you will.” God, there was some of him in her dark eyes, in her hair, but he could see so much of Toni in her too that his heart ached with it.
All he’d been able to think about on that last mission was getting home to her. The argument they’d had as he’d left had been a thorn in his heart, stinging, reminding him with every breath he’d taken. He’d gone home that day to say he was sorry, to work things out between them and maybe get the words out that he knew he needed help, that he had to step away for a while. The opportunity to do that had ended at the door. No fight, no chance to change things, not until now. Pressing his lips together, Marc nodded slowly. Toni wouldn’t have wanted to colour their daughter’s opinion of him. ”She was trying to take care of me, but I was stubborn,” he said simply, not sure he wanted to change how Ria saw him either. He kept his hand on his daughter’s, one corner of his mouth lifting lightly. ”Thanks,” he murmured hoarsely. ”It’s like an old injury. It’s not a hundred percent better, maybe it never will be, but I’m hoping its enough.” To be able to take care of his daughter, to start patching up the rest of his life.
He was already shaking his head as Ria explained she couldn’t go back home. Even if the job made Toni go back, she wouldn’t force her daughter to set foot in the place that was wrapped in such nightmares. ”You won’t have to, I promise. I’ll do whatever I can to make a safe place here for you and your mom.” If he had his way both would stay here, but Marc knew that wasn’t a demand he could make yet. Toni didn’t even know that he was here, that their daughter was safe. The corner of his mouth lifted in a smile that was almost sad. ”My home is wherever the two of you are from now on, but if you and your mom wanna stay here, I’d love that. There are people here who’ll work their asses off to make sure that he never gets to come near you again.” If the sheriff’s office didn’t manage it, then he would, one way or another.
”I do,” Marc promised instantly as his request had Ria’s face lighting up. He’d felt that warmth growing in his own chest, that bubble he’d felt earlier expanding. ”I’m a dad.” The laugh rolled out of him, a little watery around the edges again. That meant responsibility that would weigh heavy on him but he’d take it. The sound dried up a little, the talk about turning making his heart ache for his kid. ”Even when you know what’s coming, it’s always going to surprise you. You can only imagine so much… next time whatever happens, I’ll be there with you, alright?” Maybe with Toni as the anchor for both of them they could manage this. Whatever happened when Ria turned again he would be there to help her through it all.
That was still a month off though and he had things he could do to take care of his kid before that. With the appearance of the cop, they were finally able to leave. The call would come from Toni eventually and then they’d take that next big step, til then he was gonna get his kid fed and back to his apartment, where she could relax without the uniforms around. He walked out to the truck with Ria, opening the doors with the remote as they approached. ”You’re definitely my kid,” Marc said with a grin. ”No relish there, but maybe we can pick up some groceries after, see if we can make something like your grandma’s while we wait for your mom?” He opened the door for Ria to hop in before heading around to his side and pulling out onto the road.
