THIS IS A CRUEL WORLD AND I EXPECT very LITTLE FROM IT.
Sebastian still did not understand the concept of cell phones. They were rather odd and people looked deranged whenever they pressed the device to their ear to talk. It wasn't the talk that captured his attention, but the fact that they looked so relaxed. He even saw one person talk with their phone in their hand as if the person could hear them from so far away. He saw white things in their ears and to say the least, it looked rather stupid. The concept of cars was still so strange to him. They were like vessels, but on land? Whoever had created that must have been tipsy off of moonshine or something for it is a rather strange creation. Too strange for Sebastian's liking. He had gotten on a moving vessel once and it was quite possibly the worst experience he had ever been through. The man commanded the vessel like a drunken pirate. He had gotten off that day feeling dizzy and that feeling lasted for the entire day, refusing to leave him.
Now though, he was going to try a drink. Something called coffee. He had heard about it so many times and he definitely felt rather curious to see what it tasted like. He stopped in front of the Coffee Bean before he flattened his palm against the door, giving it a single push to open it before he stepped inside, letting himself be greeted with a rather strange aroma that made his stomach rumble. It was such a strange sensation but he quite liked it. Sebastian made his way to the front, cutting through the line without even realizing. He simply didn't understand why people were standing behind each other like that. Do they not care any more about the concept of personal space? He would rather not let them breach his personal space if he could help it. "Hello. I would like to order a Coffee." The woman working there gave him a rather strange look for his lack of specification. "Of course. We've got everything here. A Caramel Frappuccino, Iced Guava Passionfruit Coconutmilk Drink, Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino, Cinnamon Dolce Latte.." She continued listing off the names of the drinks, making Sebastian's brows pinch together in confusion, staring at her like she had just manifested a third eye in her forehead or something close to that. "Did you have a stroke just now? Should I be worried?' Sebastian questioned, his head tilted slightly to the side. "W..What? No, sir, I was just listing the names of our drinks." She quickly said. Of course ordering something as simple as those beans would be difficult. This world just loved making everything difficult for him, huh? He looked rather lost as he looked at the menu, his confusion was still visible on his face for sure.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Cassie was sure she didn’t like coffee. Even with a whack load of cream and sugar, it was still way too bitter for her. Maybe she was too young━maybe coffee was an adult thing and she wouldn’t like it until she was old and bitter herself.
Cold drinks that were basically coffee-flavoured sugar, though? Those were good. She loved the whipped cream and the general slushie-texture, though sometimes Cassie wondered if it was really just the popularity that made them so desirable. Were they even that good?
In the end, it didn’t matter━because she was standing in line for one anyways.
Suddenly, there was a boy walking in and cutting past everybody, going right up to the counter like he owned the place. A few people bustled and groaned, but nobody actually said anything, and the barista seemed to take his order anyways.
‘Hello. I would like to order a coffee.’
Cassie glanced up at that, listening intently with her brow furrowed at him. The way he spoke was strange, as if he’d never ordered a coffee before, words having a touch of something poetic that seemed… old. If Cassie were to make an educated guess, in this town, she’d say he might’ve been older than he appeared. But maybe that was just wishful thinking━the hope that she’d run into somebody interesting.
‘Did you have a stroke just now? Should I be worried?’
The witch barked out a laugh and quickly started forward, moving up to the edge of the counter, right beside the guy she’d already labelled as a new friend━somebody she was going to scoop up whether or not they agreed to it. He was somebody who needed help with ordering, and if she could assist somebody, Cassie was happy to do it━whether or not he was struggling because he’d never encountered a Starbucks, or if he’d been born a long time before there ever was one. She stuck her arm into his, curling it around his limb. The rush of death confirmed her earlier suspicions: vampire.
“We’ll take two grande mocha cookie crumble frappuccinos, please.” Cassie beamed at the barista, and then at her new company. “You ever had an oreo? Actually, ignore that━stupid question.” She snorted lightly at herself. If he’d never had a coffee then what made her think he’d come across an oreo before? “You’ll like it anyways. I promise.” Cassie nodded curtly, and then dug into her pocket, pulling out a few crumbled bills she’d picked off of some unsuspecting guy on the street. She handed them off to the barista, paying an obscene amount for their drinks, and then began leading the guy to the end of the counter where they’d get their drinks. “I’m Cassie, by the way! Nice to meet ya, glad to be your designated coffee-helping-buddy today.” She giggled.

THIS IS A CRUEL WORLD AND I EXPECT very LITTLE FROM IT.
The last thing he expected was someone wrapping their arm around his own. A confused look soon took over the vampire's expression as blue eyes drifted down to settle on the person. She was rather small, but then again, Sebastian stood at six feet, so perhaps some people were destined to be small compared to him. He eyed her with a rather strange look as he waited to see what she needed from him. Was it perhaps money? He wasn't too sure that he could give her any as he had little to no money on him. He had been getting things by using compulsion. It was easier for him to do than to find work or a way to gain some money. His attention drifted back to the woman working behind the counter to see if what the other had said would work on her and it seemed like it had. She nodded her head and placed in their order while Sebastian wondered silently what she had just said. It made no sense to the vampire, but then again, almost nothing made sense to him.
Sebastian's brows furrowed in confusion when she asked if he'd ever had an oreo. His lips parted to tell her he had no idea what that even meant when she took it upon herself to tell him to ignore that question. "It sounds rather odd, if I'm being quite honest. What is it with humans and picking rather odd names for simple things? Or picking more than one name for that matter." Like cars and vehicles, for that matter. It was odd to him, at least. Just call it one thing, please. "Very well, then. I shall have this Oreo you're speaking of." Sebastian nodded his head, unsure why he was even trusting her, but she seemed to know what she was doing. She spoke so casually and confidently to the lady working behind the counter that it almost had him in awe. Almost.
"Are the drinks going to drop from the ceiling? Why did we move?" Sebastian looked up at the ceiling, expecting a small portal to appear and drop their drinks but no. It looked like a rather ordinary ceiling. His attention moved back to the young lady in front of him, head tilting slightly to the side as she introduced herself as Cassie. "Ah, nice to meet you, Cassie. Name's Sebastian." He felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips. "Never knew ordering something as simple as a coffee could be so ... unnecessarily complicated." Sebastian looked over at the people ordering their drinks one after the other. "You do not seem weirded out by my confusion." He pointed out, knowing he had met a couple of people who looked at him all weird due to his confusion by the most basic things. "Do you perhaps deal with this often or?"

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘It sounds rather odd, if I'm being quite honest. What is it with humans and picking rather odd names for simple things? Or picking more than one name for that matter.’
Cassie grinned at the man, raising her brows. He wasn’t very subtle, but at least he had Cassie to swoop in and save him, she thought. “Oh yeah, totally. They’re super wild,” She laughed, pausing for a second before asking, “Wait, things like what?” With her brows knotting together. She couldn’t really come up with any examples other than the things she’d just said━they were simple to Cassie, even if she’d been dead for two years. They still had Starbucks before she’d gone under, and she’d come back with a yearning to experience everything, so she’d filled herself in on anything new or missing. Maybe this guy was the same, though he’d obviously been dead for a lot longer than she had.
“Nooo,” Cassie giggled at his agreement to trying an Oreo, “It’s just like an Oreo. I think it’s got Oreo crumbs on the top of the whipped cream.” She was probably giving him way too much information. She didn’t want to confuse the poor guy, but it was probably too late for that. Cassie laughed, patting his bicep with her free hand. “Never mind, it’ll be great, don’t worry.”
With her hold on his arm, Cassie dragged the vampire to the end of the counter, another loud laugh coming from between her painted red lips. She watched him peer up at the ceiling, incredibly amused by how oblivious he was. “Yeah, they’re gonna drop from the ceiling,” Her response was sarcastic, though she tried to keep the smile on her face to show she was only teasing. And then it dawned on her that she probably shouldn’t joke like that; the risk of confusing him even more wasn’t worth it. “No, I’m joking. They’re gonna make the drinks and put them here for us,” She explained, pointing at the counter, then turning her head to look back at him. “It’s just so we get out of the way, then the next person can go up and order.” Her index finger went to the cashier, showing him how the person next in line went up to order. “Aaand… that line is where you’re supposed to wait before you go up to tell them what you want.” She teased.
“Sebastian? Cool. I like that name,” Cassie nodded sharply as if backing up the statement. Blue eyes scanned the line, then the baristas shuffling behind the counter, getting their drinks ready. “You picked the most complicated coffee shop, man. They’re not always this bad━but, yeah, they make the names all weird.” Another giggle, and her blue eyes were ticking back to his face.
“Often? Naaah, but I figured you needed some help.” Cassie offered him a friendly smile, leaning in to whisper to him, “Sometimes it’s hard when you get back after a while.” She winked, trying to show him she was in on the joke. “So, what happened? Were you turned and locked away, or did you just come back to life?” The witch asked as if it was the most common question in the world━as simple as how she ordered their drinks.
Finally, they arrived on the counter in front of the pair, straws in tow. Cassie grabbed one straw with the arm not curled around his, pushing one end on the counter. The plastic tube broke through the paper wrapping, and Cassie stuck the free end between her teeth to pull it out completely. Dropping the wrapper in a nearby garbage receptacle, she put the straw in her drink afterwards, and then lifted the cup to take a sip. It was all pretty much a demonstration for him, and Cassie shifted sideways once she was done, showing Sebastian how she pulled the drink up through the straw and into her mouth. “See? It’s not so bad once you get the hang of it,” She encouraged gently, talking with her mouth full before she swallowed the freezing liquid.

THIS IS A CRUEL WORLD AND I EXPECT very LITTLE FROM IT.
"Like for instance, a phone is not simply called a phone. No. There's a cellphone, Iphone, Sam..sung? And other few names I did not care long enough to memorize, really. What else? Ah, yes. Vehicles. There's a bus, a car, and a bike. Bikes are truly the most odd things. Rather than four wheels, they only have two. How do they even keep balance?" Sebastian shook his head with a small sigh falling from his lips.
Nooo, It’s just like an Oreo. I think it’s got Oreo crumbs on the top of the whipped cream. Never mind, it’ll be great, don’t worry.
Sebastian's head tilted slightly to the side, his confusion becoming visible on his face as he watched Cassie like she had just grown a third eye in the middle of her forehead or something like that. It just sounded overly complicated to Sebastian who did not even know what an Oreo looked like in the first place. She must have sensed his confusion because she was soon telling him that it will be great and not to worry. "Very well then. I shall trust you, short one." Sebastian nodded his head once, his lips pressing together to form a brief smile.
Sebastian's eyes widened momentarily at the other's words when she told him that their orders would drop from the ceiling. "I just purchased these clothes, I do not want them to get ruined with the smell of caffeine." He frowned slightly at the inconvenience. "Are you good at catching things?" Sebastian questioned with a quirked brow before his gaze turned to the ceiling once more and before he could ask more questions or take any precautions, she was telling him that she was joking. "Ah... Makes quite a lot of sense. Perhaps more than the drinks dropping from the ceiling bit..." Sebastian nodded his head with a small hum falling from his lips. "Oh... So that's why these lines exist... That also makes sense. I merely thought they were all together and taking turns ordering."
"Why thank you." Sebastian's lips stretched to form a brief smile when she told him that his name was cool. "Really? I thought this was the only coffee shop in town." Sebastian's brows furrowed slightly.
The other seemed quite casual about the conversation which was rather odd. People back then often talked about vampires in secrecy, all while looking over their shoulders to make sure they aren't caught in the act. "I was desiccated in a box for quite a long time. I only just came back to life." Sebastian revealed, his tone sounding rather casual as well.
Blue eyes watched her carefully as he moved his hand to grasp his straw as well, opening it and withdrawing the straw inside. He put the straw in his drink and took a sip as well. "Does your generation not worry about cavities? This is quite sweet. But I... think I like it quite a lot." Sebastian took another sip, enjoying the sugary taste. "Perhaps I could take Elizabeth to try this one time... Although there's no guarantee that she hasn't already."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Cassie was pretty amused by Sebastian. All her jokes were taken literally, and he had the little witch giggling each time she teased and he assumed it was in all seriousness━like with the drinks dropping from the ceiling. Cassie only laughed before letting him know that wouldn’t actually happen, but the conversation was still silly━only further driving her neverending burst of energy.
“Mmm, in town, yeah. For now.” Cassie added ominously, narrowing her eyes at Sebastian before breaking off in a laugh. There was no reason for it, and she hoped he wouldn’t think she was only being strange, that maybe he’d get this joke, if none of the others. “But there’s one by Whitmore, y’know, the college just outside town? It’s not so bad.” Cassie nodded happily, thinking of the last time she’d been there. The hellhound. Well, that’d certainly been interesting━even more so than a vampire who’d been trapped in a box for years and years. Vampires were kind of old news by then━Cassie was smitten with them at first, and then it’d turned out to be just one she really liked in particular.
Still, they could be dangerous━but what she felt when she curled her arm around Sebastian wasn’t half as bad as how the hellhound had made her feel.
‘I was desiccated in a box for quite a long time. I only just came back to life.’
Her lips parted, jaw hanging open for a moment or two. “Seriously?” She asked, “That sounds super sucky, I’m so sorry. A box. Who would do something like that?” Cassie frowned, though she could pick out a few people from her past crazy enough to do just that. What she didn’t consider, either, was what Sebastian could’ve done to deserve it━if anything. Maybe he’d had a really good therapy session in the box… or maybe it wasn’t his fault at all. She couldn’t imagine Sebastian hurting a fly, though she’d only had one interaction with him━he couldn’t be a monster━not to Cassie━not with the way he’d been so curious to try a sugary drink.
And a box was definitely worse than travelling around in another girl. Even if Cassie’d been jealous of the life Davina had lived, at least Cassie was able to see it. She couldn’t fathom having to stare at a slab of wood all day with nothing to keep her company but her thoughts. That’d been bad enough when she was alive and shyly going through life.
Cassie took a big gulp of her frappuccino, and then another sip, peering sideways and up at Sebastian as he tried it. Her grin went wide after a moment, bouncing on her heels, excited that he enjoyed it. Mentally, she gave herself a little pat on the back for choosing so well. “It is sweet! That’s what makes it so good!” She laughed, nudging him gently with her elbow, as if prodding for more information. “Who’s Elizabeth? She your girlfriend? ‘Cause yeah, totally, this is a cool date spot.” Cassie nodded, blue eyes scanning the establishment’s insides for a moment before coming back to Sebastian. How long had he been back that he’d gotten himself a girlfriend and hadn’t tried coffee? That wasn’t even fair, Cassie totally wanted a boyfriend. She wondered if Dementri would ever go here with her. Probably not, she thought, she’d never even seen him outside of the Blood Den.
“Even if she’s tried it, I’m sure she’ll like it if you’re taking her here. Just… remember to wait in the line next time.” Cassie giggled.
