It had been a few weeks since Lawrence started at the Blood Den, but he had been a bartender many times in the past so it was like second nature to him. He tried to get a job in Campbell Bar, but they asked too many questions and wanted his ID. Rewind 50 years and someone would hire him based on his cute smile and charm. Nowadays people asked too many questions. Latimer however was willing to hire Lawrence, no questions asked, only to be supernatural. Apparently, their last bartender had a tragic accident on their first night working there, just like many others who had passed through. In return, Lawrence asked no questions. He needed the money anyway. The blood den was like nothing he'd ever experienced before and he loved it. Here vampires were free to feed on people and be themselves. It reminded him of the old days in New Orleans. Mortals entered this place at their own peril. There weren't just vampires here though, apparently, there were demons too. Lawrence had yet to meet any of these demons, and it wasn't something he was keen to do, or maybe he had met one and never realized. It was Wednesday night, and the Blood den was somewhat quiet, but it was a weeknight and they hadn't long been open. There were only him and another bartender working. Lawrence was in a surprisingly good mood as he had handed in one of his last assignments the day before and felt a weight lifting off his chest. He had completely forgotten how stressful school could be. The exams, the revising, the deadlines. He didn't have long left then he would be free of education forever, although he knew vampires would often to school over and over. That never appealed to Lawrence. At least not yet. Lawrence glanced towards the entrance as a blonde girl entered. He frowned slightly, convinced he recognized her from somewhere. She had a familiar face. The den was somewhat dark though so he wasn't certain. She may have just been another pretty blonde entering the bar. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ The first time Cassie had come into the club looking for Dementri, it was weeks prior, and she had been almost completely lost. It wasn’t until she saw another couple head off to the Blood Den that she realized she’d needed to go there, and she’d found him. This time, as she entered, Cassie knew exactly where to go. She headed down the long hallway and down the stairs, finding herself in the familiar scene once more. Again, she was approached with a waiver as she entered, causing her to snort. “How many times do I have to sign this thing? Like, can’t you guys just keep it on file or what?” She scribbled her signature at the bottom regardless, and carried her coat over her arms as she wandered deeper.
Unlike last time, she didn’t immediately find the particular vampire she was looking for. Cassie went up onto her toes (as if that would help) and glanced around, narrowing her eyes at the crowd. There were tons of vampires, she was sure, but not the one she wanted. Her bright, red lips drew downwards at the edges into a pout, though she thought that maybe he was just in the back or something.
Her blonde hair flew through the air as she looked sideways, towards the bar, deciding that a drink would be better to wait with━so that she didn’t look so weird. Not that hunting down your crush in his workplace wasn’t weird, but it wasn’t as if she’d gone there every night of the week. It had been a while since she’d seen him last, but her teenage brain still swirled with thoughts of him. Maybe it was incredibly terrible of her, but she didn’t really care━it was fun. She wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t.
Cassie hopped towards the bar and plopped right down on a stool, letting her jacket drape over her lap as she leaned forward, taking up most of her designated counter space with her arms. “Hi!” She greeted the bartender, giving him a wide smile. Another cute vampire (she assumed the latter)━was that one of the requirements of working here? Like, they screened carefully at each interview or something. While he was cute, she was pretty sure she could remember him from somewhere. Her time in Mystic Falls wasn’t lengthy whatsoever, so it must’ve been before. The thought made her a little nervous; she hoped he wasn’t one of the vampires that had been involved with causing problems for her coven. Whether or not that was true, the anticipation was killing her, and she knew it’d only be satisfied by asking. So she did.
“Do I know you from somewhere?” Her eyes narrowed playfully, but it was only a second or two before they went big again, and she was beaming. “Uh… spend some time in New Orleans or somethin’? I never forget a pretty face,” Cassie giggled, peering up at him, and silently hoping that━if he had been involved with her coven━he’d be nice enough (or she’d be cute enough) now for him to forget about it.

As the blonde approached the bar Lawrence realized where he recognized her from. She was one of the harvest girls, he was certain of it, but she was alive? The last time he checked all the girls, bar Davina, was dead and the ritual hadn't gone as planned. Davina had filled him what happened afterward, and truthfully if he was in that situation he too would have run after watching other witches getting their throat slit in front of him. The other girls would have done the same if they had the chance. The young witch didn't appear to have aged, so Lawrence assumed she had been dead for a while, but no one stays dead around here, especially not witches. What had the blonde given to the ancestors in return for her life, he pondered. "Good evening" Lawrence welcomed the girl with a friendly smile. There were a few perks of working in a bar, one was the cheap drinks and two was the opportunity to meet girls. He enjoyed both of course. “Do I know you from somewhere?” The girl's comment confirmed his recollection of her. "Uh… spend some time in New Orleans or somethin’? I never forget a pretty face,” Lawrence laughed. So she was attractive and flirtatious. Bonus. "Yeah, I lived there for a while. The name's Lawrence" He replied, and leaned forward on the bar, " Aren't you one of the harvest girls? I thought you were all dead?" He wondered what the girl was doing in a bar like this. Did she want to die again? There were some merciless vampires in the Blood Den, but the witch had signed the waiver anyway, so it was none of his concern really. Even though he had only been working at the bar for a few weeks he had seen his fair share of girls coming in seeking danger and looking for a thrill. Often he found himself wavering between the innocent naive girls and the reckless girls who don't consider the consequences. His intention with these types of girls differed though. The reckless ones, he wanted to have sex with, but the innocent ones he felt drawn to on a deeper level. They were the ones who drew him closer to his humanity and reminding him of what he was like before turning. Innocent and obedient. He should stay away from the wild girls because they're the ones that pull him off track and lead him towards darkness. Given where the blonde witch was, Lawrence presumed she was one to seek menace. Would she draw him towards darkness? "What would you like to drink?" Or was she just here to flash her pretty eyes at him. "We're offering 2 for 1 on vodka soda" Lawrence pushed himself up off the bar, "Or we can do shots of whiskey together?" He suggested, playfully. Working in a bar is the only job where Lawrence would walk out after work and have lost money due to spending his wages on alcohol that night. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘Aren't you one of the harvest girls? I thought you were all dead?’
Cassie’s eyes narrowed. So he was from New Orleans, and he knew about the Harvest Ritual. Maybe he had just heard about it, but Cassie didn’t think that was likely. This was a vampire bar, and he had lived in New Orleans━she’d just signed away her safety on that little form by the door, so if he wanted to hurt her, he was more than able to. Blue eyes flicked towards the staff door, watching a form come out of them. It wasn’t Dementri, though, and the tight, nervous feeling in her stomach only grew more intense.
“Not dead anymore.” Cassie spoke after looking back at him, raising her thick brows. “I think life looks a little better on me, no?” She turned in her stool slightly, lifting one arm as if showing off her body. Cassie smirked at Lawrence, and then leaned towards the bar again, her suspicious expression returning.
“Were you one of the shitty vampires that fucked that up for us? ‘Cause if you were, then, like, fuck you.” She puffed up her chest somewhat, furrowing her brow at the man. The Harvest Ritual was just about the only thing that made Cassie nervous nowadays, and she wasn’t about to let her night be ruined by more mentions of it. She was here━the Blood Den and on the mortal plane━for fun, not for more bullshit.
‘What would you like to drink?’
Cassie relaxed somewhat. If he had been hellbent on coming after her, she figured he would’ve taken his chance already. But he offered her a drink instead, and she was immediately nodding at him, beginning to smile. “Uh… whiskey shots? Never done them before.” She’d never done much of anything, but that was the point of being back. To experience new things. “As long as you’re not gonna, like, poison me or something. That would be super uncool.” She added playfully, though there was an unsettling, underlayer of truth that was gnawing at her.

Lawrence watched as the girl's eyes shot towards the staff door. Was she was waiting for someone? That would possibly explain the fact she was here, putting herself in potential danger. Before he had the chance to ask her, she was quick to speak again. He wore a small smile as the witch spun herself around in the barstool, "Of course" He responded. “Were you one of the shitty vampires that fucked that up for us? ‘Cause if you were, then, like, fuck you.” Lawrence knew what "shitty vampires" she was referring to, but he took a back seat in the whole ritual business. If the witches wanted to sacrifice their young to the ancestors, then so be it. The vampire had his own opinions about the ritual. It was ironic for the witches to turn their backs on vampires because they fed off humans, but it's okay for them to kill their children. It wasn't an opinion he was going to share with Cassie anyway. There was no point bringing up the past, and dredging over old ground. "Nah, I wasn't one of those shitty vampires" He chuckled, "I'm glad things worked out okay in the end though" It was a genuine comment. No one wants to see a good life go to waste, and it seemed Cassie had come back with the desire to live her life. "Never done whiskey shots?!" Lawrence exclaimed. He turned back and grabbed a bottle of whiskey off the shelf, and pulled out two shots glasses from below the bar. Poison her? The vampire shrugged, "I can't make any promises" He poured them both a shot and handed one to Cassie. "Here's to being alive" A smirked appeared on his face. "Technically" The vampire was referring to himself. With that, he knocked back the shot of whiskey. The dark liquor provided a sense of warmth as it hit the pit of his stomach. It was a perfect remedy for keeping his urges at bay. "So" Lawrence poured them both another shot, "What is a cute little witch like you doing in a bar like this?" He could smell the mortal blood running through her veins. She was inviting food for some of the customers, and he couldn't help the blonde if someone wanted to feast on her. It was in his contract. Don't save anyone who has signed the waiver. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘Nah, I wasn't one of those shitty vampires. I'm glad things worked out okay in the end though.’
Cassie settled. He could’ve been lying, but what was the point now? She knew all the Harvest and Coven shit was serious, but it’d been, like, forever ago by that point, and Cassie didn’t suspect that anybody but those directly involved were still upset about it. If he said he took a backseat to it all, then Cassie wanted to believe him. Right now, she was going to have fun, and if she needed to defend herself a little later, then so be it. “Same. I’m Cassie, by the way. Since you’re not planning to jump over the bar and strangle me now.” She flashed him a smile, one that only grew over his surprise at her never shooting whiskey. Cassie was sixteen when she died━it was hard to experience anything as an introvert at that age, especially when you grew up within the confines of the New Orleans coven. She shrugged at his reaction, not willing to give an explanation━it wasn’t needed, and she didn’t want to continue thinking about all the things she hadn’t done. The point was to actually do them, so that’s what she was going to set her mind on.
‘I can't make any promises.’
Cassie giggled. Maybe it was better that he joked with her instead of promising he wouldn’t. Somehow, the jest was more comforting, and she took the shot from him, holding it between the pads of her fingers. She nodded at his toast, clinking her glass against his own with a wide grin. Free hand holding onto the edge of the counter, Cassie tossed back the shot, letting it burn and tingle down her throat. She choked once it was down, features screwing up at the taste of it. “Whatthehell,” She coughed, putting the glass on the bar and then raising her hand again, pressing the back of it to her lips. A little shiver came next; one she dramatically showed all throughout her body, starting from a wiggle at her hips before it travelled up her spine, and came out her mouth in a light expression.
Blue eyes narrowed at the glass Lawrence was refilling, ticking up to his afterwards. “Why do people drink this stuff? Like, ew.” She’d never been truly drunk before. Tipsy off sugary coolers, maybe, but never stumbling around and absolutely plastered. This could finally be the night that it would happen, though━and no matter how gross the liquor tasted, she was set on knocking back at least a few more.
The burn and lingering gross-ness of the alcohol faded away when he called her cute, though. Cassie turned her chin up to smile at Lawrence, eyes widening for only a second. She’d come to realize that once she’d opened herself up to others by becoming more excited and talkative, they’d responded threefold. Like that ghost who’d rated her as a nine. Like, seriously? He thought she was a nine out of ten? It was crazy. And now this hot guy was calling her cute? What was going on?!
Her cheeks burned pink while she grinned at him, leaning into the bar and closer to him, her elbows resting on the counter. Was she going to tell him about Dementri? Maybe he’d let her know if the other vampire was even working that night, but she’d already decided she was going to stay anyway, so why bother? Plus, telling a dude you wanted to flirt with about the guy you were waiting for was probably a bad idea. Still, she had no other reason to be there, and if he was secretly harbouring a plan to hurt her, then telling him about her something-ship could’ve possibly been a way to have him rethink it.
“I know somebody else who works here, just came to see if he was in, but…” Cassie shrugged, “Guess you’ll be my drinking buddy for the night, huh?” She teased before looking down at the filled shot glass again. Her stomach turned just at the thought of it, frowning at the dark liquor as if it was going to jump out of the glass and kill her.
“Okay, I’m doing one more, and then I want you to make me something fruity, sugary and possibly blue-coloured. Whiskey kinda sucks.” It wasn’t that she wasn’t badass enough to do it, she just didn’t like it, and Cassie wasn’t going to waste precious time doing something she didn’t enjoy. “Can you pour me a soda or something to chase it with?” She sighed softly, mentally preparing for the next one.
After a moment, she glanced back into his eyes. “What’s a cute, not-so-little vampire━” She spoke the word like a question, raising a brow at him as if expecting an answer before she continued, “━doing working in a bar like this, huh? New Orleans get too crowded for you or what?” Cassie asked, giving him another sweet smile, her body still craned towards him.

“Same. I’m Cassie, by the way. Since you’re not planning to jump over the bar and strangle me now.” Lawrence laughed, "Well the night is still young" Again, he was joking. He doubted the young witch was going to bring trouble to the bar, but he was concerned she had signed the waiver so freely when she entered the Blood Den. Hopefully, no one would try and sink their teeth into her. "Nice to meet you, Cassie" Whiskey was a drink he liked, so he knocked the shot back with ease, but noticed Cassie didn't like the liquor as much as him. It had taken him a while to become accustomed to the taste of whiskey, but if they were doing shots of vodka he would have had the same reaction as her. He laughed as she shivered in response to the shot. "Come on, it wasn't that bad! Here, the next shot is on me" He grinned, as he poured them both a second shot. He wasn't going to take no as an answer from the young witch, "Whiskey is the best spirit... that and rum" He set the whiskey bottle back down and leaned on the bar, "What's your favorite spirit? Or are you more of a wine girl?"
The Blood Den was the last place he expected to find a witch. The majority of them disliked vampires, so why would they ever step foot in somewhere that was designed specifically for vampires. "Oh, and who's that?" Lawrence questioned. There weren't many permanent staff at the Blood Den, so the chances are he would have crossed paths with the person Cassie was looking for. "Lucky for you I'm an excellent drinking buddy" He pushed himself up off the bar and picked up his shot glass, ready for the next round, as he observed the blonde. “Okay, I’m doing one more, and then I want you to make me something fruity, sugary and possibly blue-coloured. Whiskey kinda sucks.” Lawrence pretended to be shocked, "But, you looked like you were enjoying it" He smiled, "Fine, I'll grab you something blue and sugary after this" He pondered for a moment, trying to think of what drink would meet her specific criteria. First, she would need to knock back the shot he handed her. Cassie was hesitating, which made Lawrence smile even more. “Can you pour me a soda or something to chase it with?” He rolled his eyes, in a joking manner, "If you insist" He turned around and grab a can of soda from the fridge behind. He poured it out in a glass for Cassie and placed the glass on the bar. "Now are you ready?" It was a rhetorical question. Lawrence clinked his shot glass against Cassie's and knocked his back before she had the chance to change her mind. Alcohol one of the things that kept the urges to feed at bay, so he was always keen to drink. The burning sensation as the whiskey traveled down his throat was welcoming and gave him a warming sensation in the pit of his stomach. The vampire set the shot glass back down and shrugged at Cassie's question regarding why he left New Orleans. "Here's the only place that would hire me without asking any questions" He responded. Everywhere else tended to ask him for ID or some proof of identification. He couldn't exactly hand over his driving license which said he was 103. "I fancied a change of scenery, and all the partying in New Orleans was getting exhausting" When he arrived in the vibrant city everything was so new and exciting, and he overindulged in both drinking and vampire-related antics, but after 50 years it was starting to get tiring. He decided to move to Mystic Falls for a break, plus he was trying to be a better vampire and not feed on humans all day every day. He was doing well so far, but he knew if he moved back to New Orleans he would easily slip into old habits. There were also times when he thought maybe was just lying to himself by saying he could be one of the good vampires. It would be so easy for him to 'fall off the wagon', but he felt it was less likely to happen in Mystic Falls. "I have also enrolled at the Salvator School near here, to finish my studies. You know the one for the supernatural kids?" He wasn't sure if Cassie had heard of the school or not. "What brings you to Mystic Falls?... Manage to cut ties with your coven?" Or had they loosen the reins enough for her to leave and come here, to a bar crawling with vampires. "How about a blue lagoon? Vodka, Blue Curacao, and Lemonade" Lawrence asked, in response to her earlier request for another drink. It lacked the fruit but had lots of sugar in it and of course, it was blue. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Lawrence had Cassie giggling, and though she was often happier than not nowadays, it was a genuine bubble of laughter. It came directly from the pit of her stomach, rumbling out in her chest while she leaned into the bar, excited to chat with somebody who seemed sweet━even when he was joking about strangling her. She didn’t even need the alcohol to get chatty or feel comfortable, and she would’ve rathered not drinking it again, but when Lawrence offered it up for free, she couldn’t help but accept. She didn’t know how she would pay for the rest of it, but at least one shot would be covered.
As for a favourite spirit, though, she didn’t have one. Most of the time, she could stomach fruity coolers, and those normally had a vodka base, but vodka━and now whiskey━were just about all she’d ever tried. She couldn’t tell him that, though, even if he knew who she was. It’d make her seem young and inexperienced, and Cassie definitely did not want to be viewed that way. “Uh, vodka, probably. It all tastes kinda gross, though,” Unless there was a shit ton of sugar, she was usually just forcing herself through it. “Wine is extra gross. It’s too… I dunno. Strong.” And it didn’t get you drunk as fast as spirits, so what was the point of it?
“Dementri.” His name brought the edge of something bashful and innocent to her grin, cheeks turning pink. She was crushing, and it felt so foreign and exciting. She’d liked boys before, obviously, but that was pre-death. It hadn’t ended up going so well in the end, either, and even though this one was a vampire, she still hoped for the best. If anything, this was her time to learn what he was like with others. “He’s not in, right?” Cassie asked, and then raised herself off the stool somewhat, leaning a little closer to Lawrence━as if telling him a secret. “Is he… like, cool? Have you worked with him before?” She asked her questions, lingering for a moment before she dropped back into the seat, staring down at the new shot.
Once the glass of chase was put in front of her, Cassie let out a sing-songy, “Thank youuuu!” Followed by a laugh. And then she was nodding and picking up the shot glass again, clinking it against Lawrence’s before pressing it to her lips. She gagged as it went down, but Cassie stayed strong, finishing the whole shot. In the end, she was darting for the soda and practically downing the entire thing, another disgusted shiver running through her. A dramatic, deep pout curved Cassie’s red lips downwards as she listened to Lawrence explain why he’d left New Orleans, the displeasure with her drink still obvious on her features. It passed in a matter of moments, especially when she was barking out another laugh at his reason for leaving. Her expression did a complete one-eighty, flipping back to happy and excited.
“Wait, wait, wait, lemme get this straight,” Cassie shook her head, laying her palms on the counter and shifting in again, as if she was starting up a critical conversation. Blue eyes narrowed at Lawrence, lips pursing at him. “You left New Orleans because you were tired of partying so much?” A teasing grin played at her lips, amused more than anything else. Cassie hadn’t ever partied in New Orleans, had tried to avoid them with everything in her power, so she didn’t really have a frame of reference━but weren’t people supposed to enjoy them? Like, especially supernatural creatures? “God, you gotta be an old vampy-vamp, huh? You sound like you’re ‘boutta break out a cane and hobble on outta here.” Cassie perked up immediately after teasing him, back straightening while she kept that wildly entertained look on her face. She didn’t really care how old he was, and she was only kidding, really━she hoped Lawrence wouldn’t take offence.
‘I have also enrolled at the Salvator School near here, to finish my studies. You know the one for the supernatural kids?’
“Noooope.” Cassie shrugged, still smiling brightly, her eyes never leaving Lawrence’s for more than a moment. And even then, they swept down his torso and his arms, then curiously to the bar, and back up again. “Haven’t heard of it. But that’s cool! It’s never too late to finish, right?” She winked at him, joking, though she hadn’t bothered to return to high school. What was the point now? Was she supposed to… get a job or something? Gross.
The question of her cutting ties with the coven had those thick brows knotting together, though, a genuine frown finally replacing that grin. He said it as if she’d want to, like it would free her. “No.” Cassie puffed, “We just came back in Mystic Falls. And we’re… supposed to finish something here. So…” Cassie trailed off. Lawrence seemed harmless enough, but she didn’t exactly want to dive into coven business with somebody who was still a complete stranger━sweet or not. She lowered her head slowly, arms crossing over the bar. Cassie laid her chin on her forearm, peering up at the vampire.
“Yeah, a blue lagoon sounds good. Thanks,” She smiled again, but it was softer, calmer. Less never-ending bounds of energy behind it, and she didn’t bother to raise her head.
“Are you allowed to hang out with me like this?” Cassie asked in a small voice, big, blue eyes blinking innocently up at him. “Like, my drinking buddy isn’t gonna get stolen, right? ‘Cause that would really suck, and then I’d be all alone with all these weirdo vampires.” The last few words of her sentence were hushed, a stage-whisper, as if nobody could catch what she was saying but Lawrence━with or without that supernatural hearing. Slowly, she grew back that teasing smile, wanting desperately to have fun, and not have to worry about any coven shit.

Lawrence shook his head when she mentioned vodka, with a face of disgust, "Vodka makes me feel queasy" He still drank it if it was offered to him, but to him, it tasted like paint. He chuckled when Cassie mentioned wine was extra gross and strong. "Yeah, no, red wine is a killer," He admitted. He hated the sluggish feeling that came with drinking the heavy red liquid. The blushing cheeks didn't go unnoticed by Lawrence, and he smiled softly. What the witch was doing running around with a vampire was none of his business. He shook his head at her question, "No, he's not in today" He watched as she leaned forward like she had something important to tell him. "Is he… like, cool? Have you worked with him before?" Lawrence started to laugh. What did cool even equate to nowadays? He had only spoken with Lincoln a few times, so he couldn't really rate him on how 'cool' he was, "Worked with him a few times, yeah. He seems nice enough" He paused as he sorted out their next shot, "It seems you have a little soft spot for him" A grin formed on Lawrence's face as Cassie sang out the words thank you. She certainly had a lot more energy and character than most of the customers he had seen recently. He knocked back the shot, collecting the two shots from the bar and putting them down in the sink underneath. Lawrence's blue eyes lifted as she started to as she shifted in her seat, edging forward again as she rested on the bar against her hands. "You left New Orleans because you were tired of partying so much?" It did sound bizarre, but it was true. The drinking and late nights were getting too much for him after half a century. He needed a fresh start, but here he was. Drinking, staying up late, and partying all the same, but on a lesser scale. Mystic Falls would never match the vibe of New Orleans. "I'm not that old!" He exclaimed with a laugh, "104 this year, which is relatively young compared to some" He tipped the scale towards a baby vampire realistically. "I thought Mystic Falls would be a fresh start, but it seems the supernatural love here just as much as New Orleans" There was no escaping the beings. Lawrence was attempting to hit the pause button on his life and finish his education, but that was becoming less and less likely by the day. As much as he loved the school, it was almost impossible to juggle a job and go to college. Also, bring restricted to just animal blood was taking its toll now. It had been nearly 12 months since he last drank human blood. He was slower and weaker than he should be for a vampire his age. Cassie was right, though; it was never too late to finish. He had eternity to finish his studies, and maybe now wasn't the right time. He noticed the witch's gaze drift over his arms and torso, causing him to stifle a grin. Cassie's reply to his question was somewhat ominous, but he had a feeling she didn't want to indulge any information as to why she was in Mystic Falls. He shrugged carelessly, "Sounds exciting" Coven business was never usually exciting, though. It tended to be serious and business-like. He certainly didn't miss being bossed around by his Coven. "Coming right up!" Lawrence set off to make her blue sugar requested beverage, as he glanced back towards her as she asked him if he was allowed to drink with her, "Lucky you chose a quiet night; otherwise I would get stolen, and you'd be left to drink alone" He threw a bit of extra vodka in for the blonde, along with the other ingredients. He grabbed a plastic spoon from the holder and stirred the drink. The vampire placed the glass down on the bar in front of Cassie. Lawrence leaned forward on the bar slightly, "Don't worry, I won't leave you drinking with..." He then lowered his voice slightly, "The weirdo vampires" He smiled as he stood back up straight. Granted, there could be some questionable figures that graced the Blood Den "Cash or card?"CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘It seems you have a little soft spot for him.’
Her cheeks burned even brighter at that, a smile that seemed insuppressible pulling her lips up at the edges, pasted in bright red with the pink of her cheeks surrounding it. She rolled her eyes, though the usually-irritated movement was softened by that grin, eyes falling to the bar━as if she could get away from how she felt about him. “Shuddup,” Cassie mumbled playfully, defensive like a child who’d been teased, the word holding no weight or animosity. She did have a soft spot for Dementri, and she hoped he felt the same… maybe even just a little.
Cassie’s chin was in her palms by the time Lawrence revealed his age, elbows on the counter, staring at him as if he was saying the most interesting thing in the world. She laughed loudly, tossing her head back as she did so, and then found his face once more. “Only one-hundred-and-four.” He was right, it was young compared to a lot of vampires, but Cassie still found his wording amusing━she wasn’t even old enough to legally buy a drink, and he was calling himself young. The witch stilled at his comment about the supernatural, nodding slowly. It truly was a beacon for them, more supernaturals flocking here than she’d ever seen before. Every time Cassie touched somebody she was lit up with a new feeling, and, more than half the time, they were vampires. She couldn’t complain, though━she was literally sitting in a vampire bar like a piece of fresh meat.
Finally, something sugary and hopefully tasty was started for her, the pale skin of her face now settling on the matching arms, thin and fair, but not with nearly the same undertones of pink. She was still sporting a blush, albeit more gentle than before, the alcohol having warmed her body thoroughly. The grin returned, happy she wouldn’t be left alone, especially when it probably wasn’t safe for her to be there at all. For some reason, though, she felt like she could trust Lawrence━and maybe that was stupid on Cassie’s part, but you live and you learn, and she hadn’t done nearly enough living yet.
Her head lifted a few inches to stare into the blue liquid of her glass, amazed by it before similarly coloured eyes lifted to his face. She giggled, letting out an excited, “Sweeeeet,” Before nodding happily. Cassie leaned in, flicking the tip of the straw with her tongue before closing her lips around it, wide eyes trained on the vampire.
‘Cash or card?’
They widened a little more at that. Cassie hadn’t exactly thought that far ahead, and she didn’t have anything on her━maybe a few bills, but that wouldn’t help with everything she’d already consumed. “Umm…” Cassie began, leaning back only an inch from her straw and giving Lawrence a sheepish smile. “Can I just… start a tab? I’ll just pay it all at the end. We’re gonna be drinking buddies anyway, right? Sooooo you won’t have to worry about me skippin’ out on you.” She gave him her brightest, toothiest smile, as if that would make her more trustworthy. Dining and dashing was exactly what she’d have to do.
For some reason, that didn’t deter her from ordering more. After two shots, and that first blue lagoon, she requested two more of the same sugary drink. Cassie didn’t give herself much time between them, not realizing how it was affecting her before she’d stood up, saying a loud and excited, “I gotta pee! Be right back!” To Lawrence. The witch had only gotten progressively more intoxicated while she sat with him, giggles becoming more frequent, a little sway to her body as she sat at the bar. That was nothing compared to the wobble she experienced after she’d stood up, though, and the lingering queasiness in her stomach started coming on at full force. “Wuh oh,” Cassie burped, one hand coming to cover her mouth just a few seconds too late, doing nothing to mask the sound. Bile bubbled up her throat, but she swallowed it as a knee-jerk reaction, a deep frown on her lips once she’d dropped her hand. It went to the bar, fingers curling around the edge to gain any semblance of steadiness. “I don’t feel so good.” And she did really have to go to the bathroom.
Blonde hair whipped over her shoulder as Cassie stumbled her way to the bathroom, managing to get there without tumbling over completely. She dropped to her knees in front of the toilet, though, and gripped the porcelain edge with white knuckles, holding on for dear life while everything on the inside poured out and into the bowl.

Lawrence chuckled gently as he watched Cassie's cheeks burn red, confirming what he'd stated. She did have a soft spot for the vampire, "Well, he seems like a nice guy" Seems being the operative word. He had only spoken to his co-worker for the briefest of moments, so he didn't want to assure Cassie he was a good person for him to then rip her throat apart. He would feel partly to blame for pushing the young witch towards her crush. The vampire nodded to Cassie's request to start a tab, "It wouldn't be wise of you to skip out without paying the bill. The owners of this place are…" He paused for a moment, searching for the correct word, "Savage" He couldn't imagine Latimer glossing over someone running off without paying for their drinks. He turned back to the til and set up a running tab for the blonde. After a few seconds, he spun back around to face the blonde. As always, he completely forgot a human's tolerance to alcohol was so low, so he was happy to keep Cassie's glass topped up, along with a few more shots. In fairness, he had only served her a handful of drinks when she announced her department to the bathroom. Blue eyes watched as the blonde got to her face and stumbled a little. “I don’t feel so good.” Lawrence didn't even have a chance to react to Cassie before she darted off towards the bathroom, albeit staggering as she did so. He leaned against the bar, sighing deeply. Despite the array of bars he had worked at over the past few decades, the vampire hated people being sick. It was a chain reaction. Hearing someone being sick, Lawrence would automatically feel sick as well. Cassie was definitely being sick; he could hear the sound travel through the walls into the bar. Perhaps it was best to let her get everything out— a fresh start. Lawrence grabbed a glass from nearby and filled it with water for when the blonde returned. Casse had only been in the bathroom a few minutes when Lawrence stopped a pair of female vampires lurking near the bathroom, talking to each other. "You should go in. The girl's trashed, she won't put up much of a fight" The pair laughed. Lawrence sighed again, as he ran his fingers through his hair, feeling worried for Cassie. The witch had signed the waiver, saying she was a free meal to anyone who wished to take her, and because of that, he shouldn't get involved in what was about to happen. That moral voice in his mind was telling him to get involved though. She was only young and had already died before. No one should have to die twice so young. The brunette vampire stepped forward, making her way towards the bathroom door. Before any carnage could happen, Lawrence picked up the glass and headed over to her. "Out of order, you'll need to go upstairs and use the bathroom in the Underground Club" The vampire announced as he drew closer to the girls, both of them glaring at him. "Well I don't want to go upstairs, I want to use this bathroom" The brunette went to push past Lawrence, but he stuck his arm across the door, his jaw tightening slightly, "Go find someone whos coherent" He paused, watching her, his body tense, ready "Let's not escalate this to unnecessary violence, just go upstairs" The brunette sighed, and turned away heading back towards her friend. Lawrence pushed the door open, "Cassie? He called out, as he stepped inside the bathroom. It felt bizarre, almost unnatural, to be stood in the women's bathroom. He peered into one of the cubicles to find the young witch hanging over the bowl. He couldn't help but chuckle, "Here, I've brought you some water" He held the glass out for her to take, "Look, I know you're probably smart enough to know this, but you really shouldn't be hanging around in a bar like this" She had her magic, but it all depended on how well she could use it. When faced with a murderous vampire at 19, Lawrence panicked and ran. Thinking back there were so many things he could have done differently to stop the sequence of events that unfolded thereafter. ━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Cassie couldn’t remember the last time she’d gotten sick. Maybe as a kid, after eating something that didn’t agree with her? Or having too much? Either way, she’d never vomited from alcohol because she’d never had any before. This was a whole new experience and… it wasn’t a fun one.
‘Cassie?’
After emptying her guts into the bowl, Cassie heard Lawrence’s voice and slowly turned to him while she was still sitting on the floor. Her eyes were bloodshot from the force, and she probably looked awful. Way past the point where she’d want any cute boys to see her. Cassie raised one hand, flashing the peace sign like all was well. She felt pretty empty by then, like nothing more was coming, but she still didn’t have the energy to get up.
“Thanks.” She mumbled with a weak smile, reaching out to carefully take the glass from him. Slowly, Cassie brought it back to her lips and took in a mouthful, gargled it, and then spat it down into the bowl. The next time she took a sip, she actually swallowed it━despite the burning sensation in the back of her throat.
‘Look, I know you're probably smart enough to know this, but you really shouldn't be hanging around in a bar like this.’
Cassie frowned. Yeah, she knew that, didn’t need some old vampire telling her, but her immediate rebelliousness was probably an indication of how right he was. “Why’s this town full of stuff I’m not supposedta do?” Cassie puffed, a little mumble to her words. “I just wanted to have some fun, okay?” And find Lincoln, but she wouldn’t admit that again, not while she probably looked so pitiful bent over that toilet bowl. Speaking of, the smell was atrocious, and she leaned up to flush it, then sideways and away while it went down.
“You know about all the Harvest shit.” Cassie sighed, taking another sip from her water, eyes trained on the floor. “I feel like I can’t talk to my friends about it, ‘cause some of them want revenge, and the other doesn’t. And like… I just wanna live my life, y’know? I’m pissed at our other friend for screwing it up and making us stay dead, but… we’re alive now. Doesn’t that count for something?” She glanced up, a pleading look in her eyes. Hopeful that Lawrence would relate and maybe even meet her halfway on this. “You probably get me ‘cause of the whole vampire thing, right? Like… seizing the day and stuff? I already wasted one life; I don’t wanna waste another chance.”

There was that cabinet at home where his parent’s stored their grown drinks. His parents instructed him and his sister to keep out. Lawrence snuck into the cupboard once just to see what was actually in there. Curiosity got the better of him, but he found he hated the smell of the alcohol and the thought of taking a sip made his stomach turn. Phoebe on the other hand happily drank from the bottles. During his human years, he drank alcohol once or twice. Again, out of curiosity. Telling himself maybe the taste wasn’t as bad as the smell, but it was for him. His vampire years however we’re a whole different story. He drank to suppress the cravings and to have something warm sit in the pit of his stomach. Often forgetting mortals can’t handle their drink as well as vampires. Now poor Cassie was clutching onto the toilet bowl. He felt partly responsible for her sickly state. Lawrence laughed as Cassie put up a peace sign. An indication she was okay. He handed her the glass of water, watching as she rinsed her mouth out, “Apparently if you yak you don’t get a hangover the next day” He shrugged, never having experienced a hangover. It was just something he heard humans talk about in the bar. Nonetheless, he wasn’t here to lecture her, but at the same time, he didn’t want to see her getting killed in the name of fun. Lawrence had seen it too many times before. People seek a thrill and end up drained in an alleyway. A problem he was part of back in New Orleans but wanted to prevent in Mystic Falls. The vampire leaned against the bathroom stall door as the young witch continued. He nodded in response to her comment about the harvest girl shit. A ritual he never agreed with but it wasn’t his place to say anything. He was a vampire, they were witches. Sworn enemies to some. He exhaled slowly as Cassie mentioned that he should understand where she was coming from. Here she was preaching to a person who spent 50 years in one city because he craved somewhere to call home and feared loneliness. He hadn’t exactly lived his life, but he was hoping to change that. “Getting revenge won’t change anything. You still died... that’ll never change. Coming from a person who spent decades hung up on the fact his coven and parents abandoned him it’s better if you just move on. What's happened has happened. Make the most of life otherwise you’ll look back and realise you’ve wasted years on something that was never worth your time” He had spent decades wrapped up in his desire to get revenge, or discover a cure, or even to find a way back home. If he accepted his fate from the outset life would have been easier for him. It would have saved him years of crippling emotional pain. The type of that pain that would consume him, as if he were drowning in his own emotions. Running his tongue over the bottom lip, he glanced over at Cassie, “You’ve been given a second chance at life. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do with it… unless it’s me telling you to stay away from this bar” A soft smile formed on his lips. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ While there was certainly a rift between many witches of her Coven and vampires, Cassie just knew she’d be able to relate to them now. Lincoln was an example of that, and it was why she attempted to appeal to the bouncer that night. She had died. Literally. And so had they. While Cassie didn’t suck the blood outta people, she’d still lost something and got a harsh reality check.
And Lawrence was right. Just as she thought, it was better to live her life than dwell on the stupid bullshit surrounding them. She still felt a duty to her Coven, and maybe Monique would smack Cassie back into her place if this revelation ever came out, but the whole conversation wasn’t for naught. Cassie felt better hearing it from someone outside of the Coven, someone older who understood both sides.
Cassie made a ‘yuck’ sound as she leaned away from the toilet, reaching to flush it, then looking back up at Lawrence. “You’re right.” She sighed, “It’s so weird ‘cause, like, dying was the worst thing to ever happen to me. But it was also kind of a blessing in disguise ‘cause now I get to actually do stuff. I’m still afraid of, like, dying again, but other than that, it’s fun.” Cassie smiled, removing one hand from her cup and flattening against the floor, pretending not to notice the slight stick when she lifted it off.
‘… unless it’s me telling you to stay away from this bar.’
The witch rolled her eyes and snorted, movements slow and lazy, but there was a grin on her face nonetheless. Cassie sipped her water once more, then motioned with a floppy hand toward the door as she swallowed. “But, like, cute boys, Lawrence.” Cassie giggled, but with another breath in, she was moving forward, arms wrapping around the vampire, pressing her head to his chest. “Thank you. Seriously.” She sighed, then added in a mumble, “And thanks for being some good eye candy for the night.” Cassie giggled, slowly tearing away. She took one last sip of her water before handing the glass back to him.
“I’ll do my best to stay away.” She teased, “Seeya,” With a short wave, Cassie turned and went out the bathroom door, scurrying out of the club before anybody noticed she hadn’t paid her bill.
