The Hales might’ve held the Alpha reins at times but it had never been Derek or Peter holding them together. It had been Scott, his will alone not just creating that true Alpha spark in him but keeping them going when it looked like the things that never stopped coming for them tried tearing them to pieces again and again. There was a faith there, a strength, a determination you’d never have believed if you’d seen the asthmatic kid Scott had been just a couple of years ago. Instead of creating his own little pack to draw on, Peter had created someone who’d eclipse him instead and they were all freaking grateful for it.
Stiles let out a long breath at the thought. Niklaus Mikaelson had tried to bend that spark and strength to his will but even his people had failed. Scott wasn’t infallible but he’d fight to his last breath to keep his pack safe. Letting that breath out in a chuckle, Stiles glanced at Erica and shook his head. ”I think it’s his vocation in life. Forget Mother Theresa, we’ve got Mother McCall.” Thank God for it too. He bobbed his head slowly, thinking of just what they’d managed to achieve here in Mystic Falls. ”You’re gonna see just how much he’s managed to pull the pack together here. It’s not gonna exactly be the way you remembered it.” The veil that had been hiding everything had been shredded even further here, revealing things they hadn’t known existed, allowing people through and giving them the room to band together under the McCall umbrella.
Now it was going to expand again, in a way that’d probably leave a few tears rolling when he got her back into town, to Scott and the others. Stiles raked his teeth over his lower lip as his admission dragged out. Dark eyes on his hands for a moment before he had to look back to the road. He wasn’t about to run them off the road going into detail here about every agony they’d suffered, every loss, every thing they’d done with their own hands. It all weighed heavy and confession had never lightened the load that much. Letting out a low hum, Stiles nodded just once. The frown was already cutting deep, leaving practically scowling before she’d managed to wring something approaching a laugh out of him. He could feel Erica’s eyes on his face but couldn’t bring himself to glance over at her. It was easier not to right now.
Shoulders rising and falling, Stiles bit down hard on his lower lip. He still didn’t feel entirely OK. There were those odd nights when he woke with a start, his breathing rough, his heart pounding in his ears while he tried to force his blurred vision to focus on the hands he held out. Ten fingers, the easiest way to drag himself out of the panic attacks when he was alone. Alone and awake, not trapped in his own head anymore. ”It’s gone,” he finally admitted. ”Thanks to Scott and the others. We got it out and Scott made sure it wasn’t gonna hurt anyone else.” Change the body, screw over the thing that was using it. Leave it as a firefly again, easy to trap and bury while the effects it caused lived on.
Erica had missed all of that but now she was back and it probably wasn’t gonna be long before she was dragged back into all of it again. Stiles glanced at her now, brows raised as he snorted. ”I figured the answer was gonna be a flat no. You’ve gotta be crazy to want to.” Well, she wasn’t gonna have to worry about being anonymous here. They were practically all here, Mystic Falls emptied out by choice, or not in some cases, as they’d tried to get Allison back.”We’re not going anywhere, so I guess … this is a welcome home.” Brown eyes narrowed as he pulled onto the square, coasting to a stop in a space outside the Grill. ”You got somewhere to stay here?” Scott had already pulled his Mother McCall act there with others too, taking them in the way he had done back in Mystic Falls.

Erica had known that something was going on when she’d learned that Derek and the others had all left Beacon Hills. Ever since she became a werewolf they had been doing their best to protect their home in one way or another so she’d known that it would have taken something drastic to make them all leave like that. She had half expected Beacon Hills to have become a warzone during their absence but it wasn’t like that at all, life had gone on and things had seemed normal for the most part. She hadn’t spent much time in the town because she had known that she couldn’t risk anyone recognising her after she’d died but she had seen enough to know that her brother would be safe there. All she had wanted was to make sure that Harley was ok and he had seemed to be happy from what she could tell so she had known that she couldn’t do anymore than that. She would have stayed with him and looked after him if she could but everyone in Beacon Hills knew that she’d died and even though she had been pretty much invisible other than when she was having a seizure before she was bitten she knew that even she couldn’t go back to the way things were. Instead she’d started over and she’d spent ages moving around until now. She had hoped that she would find them while she was in Mystic Falls but she had tried so many different places that if she was honest she had started to lose hope. She had hoped that Derek would welcome her back but she had never expected this kind of reaction from Stiles and even though she was good at pretending that it didn’t mean a lot to her, the truth was that it really did. “Things have changed a lot since Beacon Hills, huh?” Erica asked. She didn’t know anything about what had happened after that, the last thing she knew was that she and Boyd had left Isaac living with Derek but she got the impression that something had happened since then. As Stiles spoke again, Erica felt a small smile touch her lips. “The last I saw you guys were just a bunch of misfits, it sounds like you’ve become a real family.” Scott wasn’t even an Alpha before she’d died so she knew that she had a lot to catch up on to say the least. As Stiles said that the creature was gone, Erica nodded. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad you’re okay,” she said sincerely even though she knew that she would probably deny it later if she had to. There was so much that they had all been through that Erica had no idea about right now but she knew that she would catch up in time. She had wanted to find Derek and Cora more than anything but Stiles had assured her that she would be welcomed into the pack even after everything that she had done and she believed him. She had been drifting along for such a long time with nowhere to really call home but now she was starting to think that she might just have found that after all. “What can I say, I’m full of surprises,” Erica said, a smirk forming on her face as she looked over at Stiles. “I ran away from all of this once and it didn’t do me any good so I’m not going to do that again,” she added. She didn’t really like the idea of being thrown back into the thick of things but she knew that she couldn’t go on as she had been so she hoped it was going to be worth the risk. “Thanks,” she said as Stiles said it was a welcome home. They had reached the Grill and Erica’s hand had already found the door handle to open it but she hesitated when he asked if she had somewhere to stay. “I’m staying at the motel. It’s a dive but it will do for now,” she shrugged, not giving Stiles a minute to give her a look of pity before climbing out of the car and closing the door behind her before waiting for him to join her. Erica’s death, then Boyd’s on top of it, had changed Derek, tearing something open inside of him. He’d have argued it til he was blue in the face, growling and threatening and probably half choking him with his own shirt. It was true though and the Alphas had taken advantage of all of the damage they had caused. Stiles wasn’t sure but he would’ve laid money on that leaving the door wide open for other things too. Each hole through them leading to another and another.
Huh.
He paused on the thought for a moment, his tongue pressed to the sharp point of a canine, eyes pinned on the road while he pondered on it. If Erica was back now was that gonna close that door a little, maybe start to ward off some of the things circling here, or was it gonna do the opposite. Jeeze, he didn’t even wanna consider that. Stiles’ brows drew together as he made a sound low in his throat. ”Even before we left there,” he admitted. There’d been those months between Erica’s passing and the oni showing up, months more until Allison had resurfaced and with each passing day things had twisted. He caught Erica’s smile out of the corner of his eye, glanced at her again before his own grin cracked back. ”Yeah, complete with all the arguments and the asshole uncle. Some of us have still got that misfit thing going on though, huh?” Himself especially. He was happy to stay that way, embracing his geekdom and everything else in a strange world.
Thankfully it wasn’t one as strange as it had once been. The ripples spreading out from the nogitsune’s possession of him were less noticeable now, that urge to count his fingers, the grip of the panic attacks less now, especially when he woke to find Lydia there beside him. His lips pressed together, his smile trying to tug at his lips regardless as he reached out to thump a hand lightly on Erica’s arm. ”Ditto.” Although that move would likely be repaid somehow later.
Stiles pulled his hand back, settled it on the wheel as he made the last couple of turns towards the Grill. No matter what happened in town they’d pull together again, patch each other up. It was what they did even if one of them had been taken. You got back on your feet, you kept fighting and it looked like Erica had done that even on the other side. Stiles tilted his head, brown eyes studying Erica for a minute before he chuckled. ”You always were.” They just hadn’t seen it until it was too late each time. He huffed out a breath, fingers tapping the wheel. ”You even try it again and one of us’ll kick your ass, probably with Derek leading the way on it.” He was gonna want to hold on tight in that pinched, secretive way Derek had done ever since he’d taken the Alpha spark from Peter. All brooding looks and frowns and growls with that maybe semi-decent heart barely hidden beneath.
He sure as hell wasn’t gonna like Erica living at the motel. Already picturing that dyspeptic look on Derek’s face Stiles grimaced as he climbed out of Roscoe. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans for a moment, pulled them free as he backed towards the door to open it for Erica. ”You ever wanna take some time away from the dive, there’s always the offer of a spare bedroom with a semi-comfortable bed. My dad’s still pulling long shifts, but there’s a fridge full of food and the two of us in and out … or there’s the glory of hiding out in our dorm, pretty sure we could fit you under one of the beds if we get inspected.” Winking, Stiles followed Erica into the Grill. Not waiting for the waitress he snagged two menus from the hostess’ stand and raised them in greeting to Clea as he made his way towards one of the booths.

Erica had thought about starting over somewhere far away from all of the supernatural drama and the truth was that she had ended up in a lot of different places while she was travelling looking for the only people who would be able to accept that she was back but none of it had felt right. Derek and Isaac were her family more than her own had ever been and while her relationship with Scott, Stiles and the rest of the pack had always been up and down she had never doubted that they cared about her. She knew that she could be stubborn and impulsive and more often than not she ended up putting her foot in it without even meaning to but no matter how much of a hard time she might give them sometimes the truth was that they were all she had and she knew that she didn’t want to give that up. She’d had to leave her younger brother behind when she’d left Beacon Hills since everyone there knew that she had died but she had at least found a way to say goodbye before she left. That had helped her more than she had thought that it would and she was pretty sure that being around everyone in Mystic Falls now was going to do exactly the same thing. In a way it wasn’t surprising that things had changed even before they had all left Beacon Hills considering that things had started to change while Erica was there and she found herself nodding. “I get the feeling there’s a lot you’re all going to have to fill me in on.” It would be easy to leave the past in the past but Erica knew that she needed to know what they had been through if she was going to stand a chance at standing with them this time around and making sure that she didn’t end up making the same mistakes as last time. “You’re never going to stop being a misfit, Stiles,” Erica teased although there was no hint of malice to her words. That was who Stiles was and, in a way, it was who she was too so it was something that she could definitely understand. As Stiles thumped her arm lightly, Erica’s gaze lingered on that spot for a moment before she lifted her gaze to meet his. “You know that if you tell anyone I said that I’ll kill you, right?” she asked although it was clear that she didn’t mean it. She wasn’t used to letting people get close to her but it was something that she wanted to get better at, it was just going to take some time. “I’d like to see you try,” Erica laughed as Stiles said that one of them would kick her ass if she tried to leave again. “A lot has changed for me too.” She had learned a lot during the time that she had been searching from them – she had learned how to take care of herself and, more than anything, she had learned how to fight so much more than she had ever known before. She knew that Derek and Scott would still perhaps have a chance at beating her but she wasn’t so sure about the others. “How is Derek doing?” she asked, knowing that it couldn’t have been easy for him to deal with everything that had happened. He was like her in some respects, he didn’t tend to let people get too close to him either and he often tried to hide just how much he cared but Erica knew that he did, she had seen it firsthand. Climbing out of the Jeep, Erica closed the door behind her before hesitating for a moment. “You know, I’m really surprised that this thing made it all the way from Beacon Hills,” she admitted. It was a miracle, that was for sure. At Stiles’ next words, Erica felt a smirk form on her face. “You do know that the aim is to get a girl into your bed, not under it, right?” she teased, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at him before heading into the Grill. “Seriously though, thanks for the offer but I’ll be fine. I’ve been back for a while now and I’ve been looking after myself the whole time, I’ll figure something out. You and your dad have your own routine and I don’t want to get in the way of that.” Heading over to one of the empty booths, Erica sat down before plucking one of the menus out of Stiles’ hand. “What’s good here?” she asked as her eyes skimmed over the menu, trying to decide what to have. Stiles puffed out a breath at Erica’s comment. A lot was the understatement of the year. This was going to be an epic conversation, the sort that was gonna run through a whole night and take a crap ton of pizza and liquor to ease the way. They’d fought more than ever could’ve imagined, even after Peter had bitten Scott and thrown them in at the deep end of the weird shit that had plagued Beacon Hills for years. They’d lost people, they’d gotten them back in a way that might offer up some hope about getting Boyd back, although he wasn’t about to drop that on Erica now and start promising stuff that he wasn’t sure they could actually come through on. It seemed way easier to have a warlock heal you while you were, you know, hovering here, or dragging you back out five minutes after you’d hit the other side. How the hell was Erica gonna take the stories about everything else they’d found here? It’d been a lot to take in a bit at a time, getting it all at once was gonna be like a wrecking ball to the brain.
Peeling his hand off the wheel, Stiles held his thumb and forefinger just a few millimetres apart. He spread them as far as he could then, which probably wouldn’t even cover what had happened before they’d realised that the thing in Allison was leading them here to Mystic Falls. Making a small sound of disgust at the God’s honest truth that fell from her lips after, Stiles got his hand back on the wheel, shrugged his shoulders awkwardly against the back of the seat. ”It’s a good thing I’m happy with who I am then, huh?” Although there were times he could’ve done without being that guy, popping Adderall to function, neurosis rising up high enough to have him tipping over into a full panic attack - although these days, those weren’t as frequent as they’d once been (huh, maybe that was the love of a good woman). Stiles’ smile took on that smug edge that Derek would’ve threatened to wipe away, his brows hitching. ”That you grew a heart or that I’m never gonna stop being me?” he asked, playing the idiot for just a moment before he snorted. ”Hey, don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” He winked, mock zipping his mouth and pretending to throw away the key.
Erica could probably still get him flinching, the same way that Derek could. He mighta been a freaking saviour for both of them in different ways, but they knew he was still one of the weaker links, an easy mark despite the bluster. Stiles snorted, tilting his head before his eyes cut to her. ”I didn’t say I was gonna be doing the actual ass kicking. I know my limits.” They’d done a lot of working out of that stuff as the world had tumbled and somehow, it still all worked. For the most part. At Erica’s question, Stiles teeth latched onto his lower lip and he shrugged again. ”Holding on. You know how he always is…” Derek could’ve been king of the land of make believe for how much he tried to put up a false front so none of them would see how bad it really was. They could all see parts and that was enough … ”Hey!” There was a hint of hurt in Stiles’ voice as Erica dragged him out of his head. ”No bashing Roscoe.” it was always close though, lots of stuff in his life held together by duct tape and hope.
At least other things in his life were in a better state, leaving him smirking at Erica’s teasing. ”Oh, I’ve got one of those already, which is why you’re under the bed and not in it. Told ya, a lot’s changed.” He thumped a fist lightly against Erica’s arm as she politely blew off the offer anyway. ”You wouldn’t be, the offer’s always there, you know, in case anything falls through.” Stiles followed Erica through to a booth, dropping heavily into it. He pooched his lips out, making a pft sound. ”It’s in the name, anything off the grill. You can’t do better than a cheeseburger with the works.” He was already twisting in his seat, trying to find a friendly face to take their order.
