Living in Chicago hadn’t been the same ever since Nate’s mom fell sick and his dad bailed. There was a time when he hadn’t thought that he would ever want to live anywhere else and after he aged out of the foster care system and took Leanne with him they had stayed in the city because it was all they had ever known. Nate hadn’t realised just how suffocated he had felt while he was there until he and Leanne decided to make the move to Mystic Falls so some good had come out of what had happened to the two of them anyway. He still didn’t understand why they had been taken from Chicago and brought to Mystic Falls in the first place but it had become clear to both of them pretty quickly that they were both different now. Nate had found that he had gone from turning into a wolf with every full moon to turning into a lion instead and Leanne had been changed as well. How that was even possible he wasn’t sure but he hoped that sooner or later they would figure it out. They both had a fresh start now anyway and that was something that Nate knew that he wanted to make the most of. Not only could he finally get away from the painful memories of what had happened with his parents and grandparents but he was also able to get away from the memories of what had happened to his partner the night that Nate was bitten. He had been badly hurt that night but his partner had been the one to lose his life and every time Nate had closed his eyes he had seen his partner being attacked all over again. Now the memories were still there but at least he didn’t find himself seeing the people he had lost no matter where he went like he had in Chicago so that was something at least. He had ended up running into Allison pretty quickly after he got to town and Nate couldn’t deny that seeing her had come as a surprise but now Dylan was in town as well and he couldn’t help but wonder if any other faces from his past were going to show up. Like with Allison this was at least a pleasant surprise, though, and Nate couldn’t deny that he was glad to see his friend. Dylan’s words were enough to draw a smile to Nate’s face. “A lawyer with a moral code, good to know,” he said, his smile turning somewhat amused as he looked over at his friend. Nate couldn’t stand it when the worst guys out there managed to dodge the charges just because they had a good lawyer who knew how to play the system so he was glad that Dylan wasn’t like that. Rolling his eyes as Dylan rubbed his arm, Nate nodded as he spoke again. “She’s lucky to have you,” he admitted. He knew that Dylan’s home life hadn’t been easy either so he was glad that things seemed to have worked out in a way at least. “Sure it is,” he chuckled as Dylan said that ramen was nutritious. He didn’t believe that for a minute. As Dylan spoke again, Nate nodded. “Thanks,” he said sincerely. “I wish I could say that was where it ended but Leanne and I were brought here and ever since then we’ve both been different. Now I turn into a lion rather than a wolf,” he explained, knowing as Dylan’s eyes flashed gold in return that if there was anyone aside from Allison that he could trust with that information then it was his friend. Soon enough Dylan was explaining what had happened to him and Nate’s expression softened. “Your dad has always been a piece of work but that’s taking it to a whole new level,” he breathed. “I’m sorry, you deserve a lot better than that.” What they deserved wasn’t always what they got though, that was something that Nate knew all too well. Plenty of people in the neighbourhood could’ve turned their backs on him and his mom after Eric had taken Mr. Halstead’s money and run. The label of thief had been attached readily enough, Mr. Halstead and his people spreading the word through the neighbourhood, making sure that it was out there that Eric Cooper was a marked man. Just in case he was stupid enough to show his face in Chicago again. Eric hadn’t, not for another decade, but the word was out there all the same. Folks had just made the choice not to hang it on him and his mom too. Even now he was grateful for it. Dylan knew that if folks had turned against them his mom still would’ve been working for Mr. Halstead, slowly grinding herself into the ground to support the two of them and work down what was an insurmountable debt and hell, he probably would’ve been working there right alongside her. Broke, ground down to something that didn’t resemble what he might’ve been.
Maybe still human though.
That might’ve been the only blessing to it. Might’ve. He and Nate probably would’ve drifted apart a different way then, not on paths that would loop together back here the way they had done now. Not sliding back into that friendship that had sure as hell sustained him at times when there were few people who had a real clue what he was going through. Balling a fist, Dylan punched his friend’s shoulder lightly, his eyes narrowing for just a moment. ”You might not see us much around here but we exist man.” He did at least, he wouldn’t speak too hard in defence of the rest of his ilk. There were bad people in every profession, in every walk of life and there were those who were the complete opposite. Nate had always been one of those. Dylan’s pout melted into a soft smile. ”I’m lucky to have her,” he said hoarsely. He knew it too. He’d seen what Nate had been through, losing his mom, then his grandparents. Leanne and him were lucky to have each other.
People watching out for one another was what had gotten him here and he was determined to pay it back a little. It felt good to have one of those people back now, even if they’d fallen back into that old pattern of teasing with words and fists. ”Salt, preservatives, a ton of MSG, all the things a growing boy needs,” he drawled lightly. The humour didn’t last long. As his mom had always been fond of saying, the truth will out. As Nate revealed what had happened to him and Leanne dread twisted at the pit of his stomach. His heavy brows rose, surprise making his mouth fall open for a second. ”A lion? Shit. I didn’t know that was even possible. Wolves and coyotes yeah … What about Leanne?” The words brought here stuck in his throat, reminded him too much of what Eric had done with the bite. His own mouth went desert dry as he let his eyes flash gold for a moment. The explanation for what his dad had done stuck in his throat. ”Thanks man,” he rasped. He lifted a hand, dragged it over his face as he tried to muster up a smile. ”I always knew he was gonna come back and try and screw up my life at some point. I guess we’ve both got reasons to need that drink, huh?” His smile slanted before he swallowed hard. Head ducking, he stepped down off of the curb, headed across the square towards the Grill, trusting that Nate would follow.

Nate hadn’t known what to think when he and Leanne had both woken up in Mystic Falls after being taken from their home in Chicago. They hadn’t even heard of the town before but something had been going on there and the two of them had decided to move to the town so that they could try and get some answers. Chicago had been their home throughout their whole lives but they hadn’t had anyone or anything keeping them there. Their mom and grandparents were gone and their dad had bailed so the two of them only had each other. Leanne had transferred schools and he’d managed to get a job as a police officer in Mystic Falls and they’d both needed the chance to have a fresh start more than they had realised. Having the chance to get away from everything that had happened as well as the loss of his partner was something that Nate had thought about a few times but he hadn’t thought that they would actually get it. Finding Allison in Mystic Falls was a surprise but finding Dylan there as well seemed like far too much of a coincidence but it was definitely a good thing as far as he was concerned. “With you I believe it, with others not so much,” Nate chuckled. Dylan had always been a good guy, in fact that was why they had become friends in the first place, but Nate had met a lot of lawyers who played by a completely different set of rules even if that meant making sure that someone they knew was guilty was able to walk free. Nate was pretty sure that he would never understand how someone could do that but there were always going to be some who could and didn’t care about what it would mean for others. “You are,” he nodded as Dylan said that he was lucky to have his mom. Nate had lost both parents as well as his grandparents and he knew that he wouldn’t wish that on anyone. There were times when he found himself missing having other family around but he still had Leanne in his life and Nate knew that he was really lucky that he had her. “I’ll take your word for it,” he said, rolling his eyes playfully at his friend. “I didn’t really know anything about this until I got here, I’ve been trying to figure it out,” he shrugged. “Apparently people can turn into other creatures but wolves and coyotes are the most common,” he explained, remembering what Allison had told him before. “I’ll let Leanne tell her yourself when you see her,” he added, knowing that it would be better that way. He knew that Dylan would understand but the truth was that he didn’t feel comfortable talking about what had happened to Leanne too much without checking with her first. “At least you’re away from him now, you’re better off without him,” Nate offered. That wasn’t something that he said lightly especially when it came to a parent but at the end of the day he knew that it was true when it came to Dylan’s dad. The guy had never been good for his family and the fact that he had put Dylan through this definitely proved that. “Definitely,” he nodded as he fell into step beside Dylan. “First round’s on me,” he said as they reached the Grill and he held the door open for his friend. Given who his dad had turned out to be, he might not’ve ended such a good guy if Eric had stuck around instead of cutting and running. He’d pushed his whole life until that day he’d come home from school and the apartment had been quiet, too quiet. Dylan had stood inches inside the door drawing in slow breaths that did nothing to calm that little tremor in the pit of his gut. The thud of his backpack by the door, the slow walk into their pokey living room to find all of his dad’s guitar’s gone. There’d been a momentary relief that his dad hadn’t taken the TV or the stereo but that had been short lived when Mr. Halstead had appeared at the door later that night. Eric was a thief, a man who’d always begrudged having to take care of his family after he’d had a pretty damn equal part in creating his son in the first place. Everything Dylan had fought against being since. He wasn’t walking out on the people who meant something to him, he wouldn’t sit by and watch someone suffer because of what he’d had a part in doing to them.
The antithesis. The anti-Eric. That was him and Dylan was glad his old friend could see it. Dylan slugged Nate’s shoulder again, gentler this time. They might not have seen much of each other over the last couple of years but when it came down it, they still knew each other, would still have enough other’s backs. Dylan hummed out his amusement, his hand slipping back into his pocket. ”I’ll take that. I’m not gonna speak for the entirety of my profession.” Like with every other there would always be those lawyers who gave the rest of them a bad name. The greedy, the corrupt, the sort who would’ve seen no problem in defending men like Eric. His mom had pulled him into a hug at his graduation tears in her eyes as she’d made it clear just how proud she was of him. He nodded to Nate now, the pride he had for her in return hot in his chest.
A complete opposite to what he felt for Eric. The guy had made sure to put lasting marks on his son’s life. Dylan twisted his arm slightly, looking down like he’d still be able to see the teeth marks scored deeply into the flesh of his shoulder. They’d faded rapidly, leaving no marks behind, except for the ones in his head. Mental scars that were still thick. His brows dropping, Dylan frowned heavily as they headed out of the station.”I had a pack back in Chicago. They … they got my dad out of there after he arranged for me to get bit. They’re meant to be keeping him on a leash somewhere. They taught me control, filled me in on what they knew but outside of coyotes … I never had a clue. You find anyone here to help you through it?” His former pack had told him there were ones here, people who’d take him in that way if he needed it but there hadn’t been time, not yet, with setting the office up. Blue eyes ticked up to Nate’s as he said he’d let Leanne filled him in on that side of it for her herself. He nodded slowly, that was gonna be an easier conversation now, thanks to all of this.
Dylan’s gaze drifted to the Grill in the distance as he dropped his hand away from his face. Some part of him still wondered when the other shoe was gonna drop and Eric would track them here to try and bring fresh misery back into his life. He gave a low, slightly bitter chuckle. ”For now at least. You know that guy, he’s like a bad penny, always turns back up somewhere.” That was a problem he’d deal with when it happened though. Dylan tried to push the thought of his head as they reached the other side of the square and he slipped past Nate at the door, heading into the Grill ahead of him. ”Oh really?” he asked with a grin tugging at his lips again now. ”I should probably push the boat out then. Ask for something top shelf.” He headed to the bar, leaned against it to study the bottles like he was going to do just that. His grin brightened as he caught sight of the approaching bartender. ”Hey, can I get a beer? Thanks. And Mr. Moneybags here’ll have a ….” Eyes twinkling as he chuckled, Dylan turned back with Nate, gesturing with one hand.

Leaving Chicago wasn’t something that Nate had planned on considering that it was the only place that he’d ever called home. While his friends had gone off to college after graduation he’d enrolled himself in the police academy so that he could get a steady job and support himself and Leanne. He had asked her so many times to let herself get adopted on her own so that she could have a chance at a better life and every time she’d refused. He understood why, they were the only family each other had left and the thought of losing her wasn’t something that Nate had wanted to consider too much, but at the end of the day he wanted nothing more than what was best for his sister. In Chicago they were surrounded by the memories of what had happened with their parents and grandparents and Nate had also found himself surrounded by memories of what had happened the night he was bitten. He hadn’t realised just how much he had needed to get far away from there until they were both taken from their home and brought to Mystic Falls and while deep down he knew that it might be dangerous being so close to the people that had experimented on them the truth was that a fresh start was what they had both needed and Nate was doing his best to make the most of it while he could. “I don’t see a lot of people like you in my job, trust me,” Nate admitted. Too many of the lawyers he saw at the station were too happy to defend even the worst criminals as long as they got paid so it was refreshing to know that Dylan hadn’t changed from the guy he had grown up with. He had been pretty good at keeping in touch with his old friends in the beginning but as time went on they’d started building lives for themselves away from Chicago and in the end Nate had drifted apart from a lot of them. It wasn’t easy but that was more of a reason why he had a feeling that this fresh start was going to help. It wasn’t going to be easy for Leanne considering that she was still in high school but they’d talked it over and she’d assured him that it was what she wanted as well so he knew that they might as well go for it. As Dylan spoke again, Nate shook his head. “Not quite. After my first full moon here I ran into a friend of Leanne’s from back in Chicago. She isn’t a werewolf or anything herself but she has friends who are so she filled me in a little. Other than that I’ve been trying to figure it out on my own,” he shrugged. It wasn’t easy but he hadn’t had any other choice so far. “I’m trying to learn to control it. I nearly hurt Leanne during a full moon before we moved here but I realised it was her and was able to stop myself,” he explained knowing that he wouldn’t have been able to forgive himself if he actually had hurt her. Soon enough they were heading in the direction of the Grill and Nate nodded as Dylan spoke again. “I do but you’re not a kid he can push around anymore and he’d be an idiot to underestimate you,” he said, knowing that his words were true even as they left his lips. As they headed inside, he couldn’t help but laugh as Dylan said he should probably ask for something from the top shelf. “Steady on, you do that and we’ll be cleaning dishes for a week to pay for it,” he chuckled as they made their way through to the bar. “I bet you make a lot more than I do,” he added before rolling his eyes playfully as Dylan called him Mr Moneybags. “Make that two, thanks,” he told the bartender as he pulled his wallet out of his pocket ready to pay for their drinks.

Dylan was gonna take that as a compliment. One corner of his mouth curled up, his chin lifting just an inch. People like him were the reason he’d wanted to be a lawyer in the first place. No kid deserved to have to go out to work when he was barely in middle school because he was terrified that some grey area of the law meant that his mom was going to have to work herself into the ground that pay off a debt that hadn’t been hers. Some lawyers were prepared to slip into the grey area, the lure of people willing to break both the law and pay big time to avoid being punished for it. Some held that high ground for longer than others but in the end so many started down that slippery slide and once you lost your footing, that was it. No matter what happened he was going to end up clinging on to it, bloody fingernails tearing in desperation, his dad clawing at him to try and get him to sink to his level, it could all kill him in the end but it wasn’t going to change a damn thing.
Dylan grinned, trying not to let his friend see that desperation that still burned in the pit of his stomach over it all. He refused to be like his dad, no matter what twisted his life. ”That just makes me all the more unique, cherish it, man.” One blue eye winked, the laughter softening what might’ve been ego in anybody else.
If circumstances had put any ego in him then turning had clawed it back out. It had brought him to his knees, the future he’d carefully mapped out for himself left in tatters at the thought that he was going to become the monster Eric had been. Maybe it was the thought of his mom going through that all again, alone, that had pulled him out of it, or maybe he was still there on the edge, holding on by his nails. For Nate … damn, that had to have been far worse … but his friend was picking himself back up, dusting himself off. Dylan grunted faintly, scrubbing a hand over his jaw before he pushed it back into his hair. ”A pack? Mine back in Chicago told me there were some here. They were willing to try and reach out and make introductions.” Amusement tugged faintly at his mouth for a moment. ”Which friend was it?” Leanne had been that couple of years younger but things always crossed over in a way, people in the neighbourhood brushing up against one another with it all. ”Hey, that’s awful. I’m sorry. Did you have an anchor?” It had seemed cheesy the first time the Alpha had mentioned it to him but somewhere in that second turning he’d fixed on his mom, those nights she’d gotten home early, when being around the table together felt normal and somewhere in all that chaos in his body something had snapped back into focus.
Now control felt easier. There was no panic when he felt the full moon start to creep in. He wasn’t looking over his should constantly for his dad, although Dylan was pretty sure that at some point Eric would track them here and try to come to him again. He wasn’t innocent or blind anymore, this time he’d be ready for his dad and Nate was already fluffing his ego about it. Dylan lifted his hand again, clapped Nate hard on the shoulder. ”I appreciate the reassurance. If he does come again, he’s gonna have a fight on his hands. Especially since I’ll have you for backup.” He wouldn’t drag his friend into it but Dylan was already grinning, that smile staying in place as they headed into the Grill and Nate offered to buy. ”It’s not like we haven’t both had the practice. You wash … I’ll dry …” He ordered a beer in the end though, slipping back onto a stool as Nate did the same. When the round came, Dylan picked up his bottle, held it out to chink against Nate’s before he took a sip. ”You ever think you’d end up moving out of the neighbourhood?” It felt like some part of him, getting smaller every day, Was still tethered there, a pull that Dylan knew he’d always be able to follow back if he needed to.

Nate hadn’t known what was going to happen when he and Leanne had made the decision to move to Mystic Falls. There was a time when he never would have imagined leaving Chicago behind but after everything that had happened there hadn’t been anything left for them in the city any longer and they had both needed a fresh start as well as answers about what had been done to them. The fresh start was the easy part, finding answers not so much. Allison had been able to help him with the supernatural side of things a bit and she had helped fill him in on the people who had taken them to an extent but it sounded like they were still a mystery to most people. He wasn’t any closer to finding out how it was possible that he had been changed from one thing to another and he didn’t have any answers about Leanne either but at least they knew that they weren’t alone. There were others in town who had been taken as well so if nothing else then at least they were in good company and now that he knew that Dylan was in town things were starting to look up even more. “Yeah, if you say so,” Nate chuckled. “Makes you strange more like it,” he teased, knowing that Dylan would see that he was just messing around. He’d met a few people during his time in Mystic Falls so far but none who knew him the way that Dylan did and the truth was that he had missed that. A lot of his friends had moved away when they had gone to college and even though some had come back and he’d made others during the time they were gone he had still missed having someone to just hang out with since he’d moved to town. He had been able to do that with Allison to an extent but it wasn’t quite the same so he couldn’t deny that he was glad that his friend was in town. “Yep. Not a conventional one by the sounds of it though, the Alpha is a werewolf but the pack is made up of a lot of different people. They have werewolves, a banshee, a werecoyote and a druid among others. Humans too,” he explained. Nate hadn’t had a pack back in Chicago, he’d had to figure it all out on his own but even he knew that that wasn’t the way it usually worked. It seemed to work for them, though, and he was glad about that. “What’s it like to be in a pack?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. Allison had told him about what it was like from her point of view but he didn’t doubt that it would be different for people who were like him so he knew that it would be good to get his friend’s perspective. “Allison Argent. I’m not sure if you’ll remember her, I ended up driving her and Leanne around quite a bit before she moved away,” he said, not sure whether it would help ring any bells for Dylan. As he spoke again, Nate shook his head. “Not at first but when I recognised Leanne she became my anchor,” he explained. “How about you?”Nate was pretty sure that going through this was different for everyone but he hoped that it might be easier now that he had a friend in town who knew exactly what he was going through. He had talked to some of Allison’s friends a little but they all seemed to have it together even though they were younger than he was so he hadn’t wanted to really let them know how difficult it had been at first. “Definitely. You know I’ve always got your back,” he nodded, completely serious about that. The two of them had always looked out for each other and Nate didn’t see any reason to change that now. As Dylan spoke again, Nate couldn’t help but laugh. “Good point,” he chuckled. “You’re on.” There was a time when Nate had done just about every odd job in the neighbourhood to earn some money so that he could save up enough to build a life for himself and Leanne once he turned eighteen and aged out of the system and washing dishes had been one of those. Lifting his bottle, he touched it to Dylan’s before taking a sip. “The neighbourhood yet, I knew we would have to move when I was old enough to become Leanne’s guardian but I didn’t think we’d ever leave the city,” he admitted. Chicago was a part of them and always would be but he knew that they’d made the right decision. “Did you?”DYLAN COOPER

What had been in Eric’s head had been a nightmarish version of the future. It had always been that way with him, whatever coloured spectacles he’d had on had shown him a future that couldn’t exist. A girlfriend who’d spend her life as his biggest groupie, recording labels suddenly realising his genius and scrapping to sign him up, a son who’d pull a Julian Lennon and follow in his dad’s footsteps with just as much skill. Maybe that had been where the disappointed had started. Dylan hadn’t felt the same fire in the belly as his dad did when that guitar had been placed in his hands. He’d enjoyed playing but it hadn’t been it for him. It had ended up the same way with the bite. He’d adjusted to what had been done to him but there was no world in which he would’ve allowed Eric to be his Alpha, guiding him through life without rules. Eric biting whoever he thought would benefit him. Would it have been his mom next? Nate? Leanne? Mr Genaro? Just how far would he have let it get before it was enough? Too far.
Dylan felt the lead weight in his stomach even as Nate’s description of the pack here confirmed that comparison. It never would’ve been that way with Eric. He would’ve continued to screw things up until the mess had gotten too big and then like he’d done before he would’ve run straight out of town, leaving his wife and son to pick up the pieces he’d left behind. Brows furrowing, Dylan shook his head. ”That’s not like any pack I’ve ever heard of. From what I was told even including coyotes is usually a problem. Things … people … don’t mix that way. How’s he do it?” It wasn’t the people that made it, he was pretty sure of that. It had to be an Alpha with the sort of strength he hadn’t seen in his own, sheer will changing the rules like a judge slamming down a hammer.
Sinking his teeth into his lower lip, Dylan shrugged, huffed out a breath. ”Safe,” was the simple answer to that. "You’ve got people to lean on when you need it … if you can get a foot in the door with one … it’s worth it man.” If was the operative word there. If you could, if you knew people. ”Dark hair?” Dylan muttered in description of Allison, he thought he could picture her, although she’d always been Leanne’s friend rather than someone he really knew.
Maybe if he had known her integrating in this town would’ve been a little easier. He was holding himself together but as an omega now, there were still risks. All he could do was try and handle each one as it came along. Dylan’s teeth slipped on his lower lip as he huffed out a breath. ”My mom,” he admitted. ”She’s always been the steadiest thing in my life.” And yet she had no clue what he was now. Dylan knew it had to change but that was a world he was trying to keep her safe from. At least he wasn’t alone in it here now. As Nate assured him of that Dylan slugged him lightly on the arm again, nodding back. They were gonna have each other in this. Again. The two of them would be a force to reckon with, even with their sleeves rolled and sudsy plates in hand. Like old times.
Dylan clinked their bottles together, sprawling deeper into his seat as he took a gulp. ”I didn’t ever picture you going. I thought you’d be that old guy in one of the apartment buildings, watching out for all the kids whose mom’s were hard at work. Uncle Nate to everyone.” Licking the foam from his lower lip as he set the bottle on the table, Dylan nodded at his friend. ”At least out of the neighbourhood. Maybe to wherever I could get my mom into school. Never thought we’d end up practically running from my dad to make it happen. Life’s always gonna surprise you huh?” Surprise you. Kick you. Pick you back up when it knocked you down.
