The life that she and Elijah should have had was so different to the one they were living now but Tatia knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. She had been brought back to life over a thousand years after she had died and she had not only been reunited with Elijah but with her son Lukas as well. Both of them had changed so much from the people they used to be but she could honestly still see the boy she had raised in Lukas and the man she had fallen in love with in Elijah and she was glad that they had the chance to make things right now. It would have been easy to hate Elijah for what he had done but the truth was that she didn’t blame him one bit. She knew how easy it was for vampires to lose control and Elijah had only just become one back then so she knew that it really wasn’t his fault. For a while she had tried keeping her distance but in the end she had realised that it was possible to forgive him for what had happened and ever since then he seemed to have little ways of reminding her that he was still the same guy she had fallen for in the first place and she loved him for that. Now the two of them were worlds apart, he was a vampire and she was a human, but somehow they had found a way to make it work so far and she honestly hoped that they would continue to do so. She knew that in the future things were going to need to change, after all it was only a matter of time before she started to look much older than Elijah, and that had been playing on her mind a lot lately. She knew that no matter what happened Elijah and Lukas would stand by her but right now she was vulnerable and considering that there were now three people in Mystic Falls who shared her face anything could happen. She had already been taken from the two of them twice already and she knew that the last thing she wanted was for that to end up happening again because she knew that she might not be lucky enough to be given another chance at life when this one came to an end. It wasn’t something that Tatia wanted to think about but it wasn’t something that she could avoid. She knew what she wanted her future to be, she wanted to stay with Elijah, Lukas and the friends that she had made since she’d woken up in the woods outside of Mystic Falls. They had become her family just as much as Elijah and Lukas were. Even now she was still amazed by the life she was living as had it not been for an incredible twist of fate she knew that she would have stayed on the Other Side watching over the people she loved. She didn’t know if she ever would have found peace while they walked the Earth but now she was with them where she belonged and she knew that she wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. “They have. I owe them a lot,” she admitted. Stefan and Damon had taken her in and given her a roof over her head and they had also helped her adjust to the world that she had found herself waking up in. She knew that they didn’t expect any thanks for what they had done but she still felt like she needed to find some way to repay them, she just had no idea how. Thankfully she had time and right now she knew that she wanted to enjoy being able to spend the day with Elijah. It felt like it wasn’t something that they always got to do too often so she always cherished the time together they were able to get and he had clearly put a lot of thought into it so she knew better than to let that go to waste. It was easy to fall into old habits by teasing him about knowing everything but soon enough the conversation took a more serious turn and a half smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she looked over at him. “I know you wouldn’t,” she said gently. She knew what Elijah and his family had been through and she also knew the struggle that Stefan faced on a daily basis. It wasn’t something that she would ever take lightly but if she was honest she didn’t see any other way to make sure that she would get to stay with the people she loved. “You’re a good man Elijah and I know you would never want me to go through any of the things you’ve seen but deep down I think I always knew it would come to this when we got back together, I’m just only now ready to admit that,” she said, her eyes searching his as she spoke before nodding as he asked if she would willingly go through it for a life with him. “I would do just about anything to make sure that we were never parted again,” she said as she let her hand rest against his cheek. “Besides, I trust you and the others to make sure that I don’t lose sight of who I really am.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Everything had its price. It was a lesson that Elijah was certain he’d first learned on the night that Henrik had died, when childhood curiosity and the desire of a big brother to make his younger sibling happy had meant that they had lost him, but obviously he hadn’t given it enough regard lately. Happiness had given his life a vaguely rose tinted aspect but he’d been so certain that he had clarity now. He’d been able to finally see just what he had done to Tatia in those first stirrings of ravenous hunger, he’d been able to see the terrible wave of grief and pain caused by his family and Niklaus’ desperation to finally free the side of himself that Esther had bound in order to hide her shame and protect him from Mikael, he’d even been able to see the faint betrayal that had been necessary to try and protect those around him from that dark wave. Each of those things had come with a cost – his own guilt trying to eat him alive, the horror at what he’d been capable of, the backlash and bitterness from each of the siblings he’d wronged in some way. He had been willing to pay each of those because he could see the greater good that could come from it all. What he had now with Tatia had come from all of that but what he hadn’t anticipated was that eventually what they had was going to have to change. For a man who had lived a thousand years he’d been blinded by the happiness and peace that they’d finally achieved. More fool him. It was a cost he would have paid quite willingly but Elijah knew that he never would’ve been able to ask Tatia to pay it. The life she’d missed out on should’ve been able to continue at that slow human pace, all that she had missed on thanks to him laid out in front of her. Time had flown by though, days becoming months, months turning into a full year and that clock had continued to tick on.
Moving out always would have been one of the next steps for them. A thousand years ago it would’ve been a place of their own eventually, a little hut in the village, one that he was sure would have constantly been filled with his siblings and with the sound of Lukas’ laughter. Now, Elijah thought, it was far more difficult when really it should have been simpler. They would find a way though, probably with the help of the Salvatores and family. The Salvatores had been lending a helping hand long before he had grown to trust them. Elijah’s smiled dimmed somewhat as he lifted his head once more. ”We both do,” he promised. For what they had done for Tatia and what they had done to help him try and prevent the ritual, he owed them too. That thanks could wait for later though, today was all about Tatia, about taking this moment for themselves. The drive had opened up an opportunity to start to plan that future, it was just a plan that he hadn’t expected to hear from Tatia. She was still able to half smile at him but his own had grown grim, fear for her, for what she would become to spend a lifetime with him clawing away at his mind. Elijah would’ve said that he’d long ago conquered his own hunger for the most part but he could remember what those first desperate days had felt like and it worried him that he would put that upon her. ”If there was another way…” he managed hoarsely. There wasn’t though, the methods for keeping oneself alive for centuries countable on a single hand. Each was painful and dangerous in its own way. The grim mask finally cracked, that faint flickering smile rising as he finally turned onto one of the rural dirt roads that led amongst the tree. ”You’re braver than I am,” he admitted. ”I’m not sure I ever would have been ready to admit that something had to change. There is still an idealist within me.” It had beaten back the realist. Stopping the car allowed him turn towards her, to bring his hand up to cover hers even as his brows knitted. ”You’re sure?” Elijah asked, already knowing her answer. ”We would never let you forget.” Swallowing hard, he leaned in, touching his lips to hers.

When Tatia was younger her life had been so much easier than it was now. She had been fortunate enough to have two parents who loved her dearly and two younger sisters that she would do anything to protect. Marrying young had never been on the agenda for her but then she had fallen in love and with her parents needing help supporting her younger siblings she had known that it would make things easier for them if they didn’t have to worry about her as well. She had done her best to look after her younger siblings as much as she could but then she had fallen pregnant with Lukas and her attentions had shifted. She knew that that was how it was supposed to be, her child had come first and her siblings had helped her look after him as much as they could, especially after she had found herself a single parent and had refused to follow her husband onto his funeral pyre. She had chosen then to live for Lukas but she had never thought that she would end up finding love again. Those in her village had never completely forgotten about the decision that she had made but they had eventually come to accept it and they had all managed to move on with their lives. There was a time when her life with Elijah would have consisted in the two of them having more children and growing old together but that wasn’t a possibility now. As a vampire Elijah could no longer father children, at least not that she knew of, and the only one out of the two of them that would grow old was her. Tatia had thought about what it might be like to fall for a human and live out a normal life but few would accept her past or the person that she was now and she knew that her heart would always belong to Elijah so she would have been kidding herself to think otherwise. As far as she was concerned the two of them were meant to be together and it was with that in mind that she had finally accepted what she needed to do. Tatia knew that she could have continued on as she was but the day was about the two of them and it was a conversation that she had known that they just couldn’t hold off on having any longer. She had made her peace with the decision she had made but she knew that it would take Elijah time to get his head around it and she wanted to give him that. Springing it on him and expecting him to go along with it just wasn’t an option, he deserved so much better than that and it was so important to Tatia that he was on board with it so she knew that this was just the way it had to be. As he spoke, Tatia gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “If there was a way for you to become human so that we could live a normal life then I know that you would do it but there isn’t. At least if we do this then I can stay with you, Lukas and everyone else I love.” She didn’t just have Elijah and Lukas to think about now, she also had Klaus, Kol, Rebekah, Stefan, Damon and Skye. They were all family to her and with the way things were they were all going to be around long after she had died and she knew that she didn’t want that if she could possibly help it. Tatia couldn’t help but laugh as Elijah spoke again and brought the car to a stop. “I know you’re set in your ways sometimes but I think you would have realised eventually,” she admitted. She didn’t doubt that Elijah would have stayed with her as she grew old and frail if she managed to live that long but that was the last thing that she wanted. Looking down at their joined hands, Tatia lifted her gaze to look at Elijah and felt a smile touch her lips as she kissed him back. “I’m sure. I love you and I want to stay with you for as long as I can,” she assured him. “It will only work if you’re completely on board with it though so if you need time to think about it then I completely understand.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

If only it had been as easy as being able to turn back the clock. There was likely never anything that could have been done about his older sister, no medicinal cure in those days that could’ve prevented the sickness from taking her, but had he known how that night would turn out he might have been able to stop Niklaus from taking Henrik to see the wolves. Stopping them from a single night might not have cured everything ill in their lives, but it would’ve meant that the straw might never have broken the camel’s back. His mother might’ve remained sane enough not to curse her children to a life of eternal thirst in an attempt to keep all alive. Elijah hoped that one day it might have meant that his brother might’ve escaped from Mikael’s torment to find a love and a family of his own, a life without the constant hardships and belittling. Rebekah surely would’ve found a willing husband, one who truly deserved her, unlike the suitors she had found in her desperate search for love since. He would have found himself waking each morning to Tatia, perhaps not so different to the way he did now, but without the constant threat hanging over their lives, without being plagued by the fact that she was aging. Day by day she was approaching his age, soon to exceed it. He would never begrudge a single line upon her face, she would forever be beautiful to him, but to others it would soon become a matter of concern. She would never be as he was, impervious to everything, capable of having his very heart torn from his chest and still being able to survive. Her life would never be as his was without being able to strip all of this away.
That was as impossible as a promise to keep her safe from all the harm this world could cause. Elijah knew he could not swear to manage either. And it grieved him. The heart that had long stopped beating as it once had ached as they batted the idea of her being turned as he had been back and forth. It was not what he would’ve wished for her, that eternal burning hunger, the guilt that weighed just a little heavier with each life taken. The squeeze of her hand told him that she had considered it all, coming to the only conclusion possible. Brows drawing together Elijah looked at her and swallowed. ”I would do it in a heartbeat,” he told her honestly. His siblings would go on around them, as eternal as they had been for a thousand years but he would willingly give all of that up for her. Nodding slowly, Elijah lifted the hand holding his to his lips. ”We will have you for as long as we all shall live and that would truly mean something to them all.” Perhaps if he had been the only one who would live on without her it would have been different but this was all of their lives and he couldn’t be selfish with that. He had to live with the consequences of what had happened but he didn’t have to live with the knowledge that he had condemned the life of the woman he loved again. Hearing Tatia laugh as he drew the car to a stop eased the knot in his gut. Elijah unbuckled his seatbelt as he shut off the engine, turning in his seat. ”It might have taken some time,” he said with dry humour ringing in his voice. He had always been one to turn things over and over in his mind before coming around to an idea, both sides hammering at his attention until one won out. Watching Tatia glance at their hands, Elijah frowned faintly, the expression only easing as she touched her lips to his. Breath whispered in and out of his lungs before he nodded. ”Then it will work,” he finally said hoarsely. ”It is not what I would have wanted for you but it is what you need and I won’t stand by fretting about it. I don’t want to live another eternity without you.” He had already done that and having grieved once, he would not do it again.

Tatia had often found herself longing for a simple life when she was younger, one in which she and her husband would be able to raise Lukas together and maybe have a couple more kids as well before growing old together. She was only young herself when they got married, little more than a child herself, but they were very different times back then and she had wanted to make the most of the hand that she had been dealt in life. Everything had changed the day that she’d learned that her husband had died in battle but she had made the decision to live for her son even though it had gone against everything that she and the others in her village had believed but in time that decision had been accepted and she had done her best to give Lukas everything that he’d needed. She hadn’t planned on falling in love again but the Mikaelson family had drawn her in pretty quickly. Rebekah and Kol had become her closest friends while Niklaus and Elijah had become something more to her than that but it was Elijah that had captured her heart. He had shown her that it was fine for her to fall in love again and even though the future that they should have had together had been taken from them they had the chance to build a new future together now and she couldn’t deny that she was looking forward to it. To anyone looking at them from the outside in who didn’t know who the two of them really were their relationship might seem a little strange, after all even though she was already a few years older than Elena when she died for all intents and purposes the two of them were passing themselves off as twins and Elijah clearly wasn’t in high school with them but Tatia didn’t care about what others might think at all. She and Elijah had lost their chance at being together once so she knew better than to take anything for granted this time around. It wasn’t very often that they got to spend days like this together but she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. As Elijah said that he would become human for her in a heartbeat, Tatia brought her hand up and let it rest gently against his cheek. “I know you would and that’s one of the reasons why I love you so much,” she admitted, a smile working its way across her face as her eyes met his. She knew that he would do anything for her, even give up his immortality, but with Elijah and most of the other people that she loved destined to live their lives without getting any older physically it felt like it was something that she needed to do if she was going to stay with them. She had already had the chance to have a child and even though she hadn’t been able to raise Lukas for as long as she would have wanted to she had the chance to be there for him now and she knew that she didn’t want him to have to worry about losing her again. “It would mean a lot to me too,” she nodded. She knew just how much Stefan struggled with being a vampire so that wasn’t really something that she was looking forward to but it was the only way that she could stay with them all so she knew that it would be worth it in the end. As Elijah said that he didn’t want to live another eternity without her, she pressed her lips against his once more. “You won’t. For the first time in a long time my life is mine to do with as I wish and this is something that I want to do for all of us,” she assured him before giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “Shall we get going?” he asked, knowing that Elijah had a whole day planned for them that she was looking forward to. The future had always been nebulous. They may have tried to lay themselves out a path through it, finding sure footing as they went, daring to imagine that there might be a time when they would no longer have to run, finding those brief snatches of happiness on the way. For a thousand years Mikael had been in pursuit, never allowing them for linger too long. Any time they did manage a few decades together somewhere they destroyed that happiness themselves, doubt and paranoia creeping in until suspicions that something would happen made it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Elijah knew it was only a matter of time before the same happened in Mystic Falls but while all had been going so well with Tatia he’d refused to acknowledge the massive elephant sitting in the corner of the room, just waiting for its moment to stampede through his life. There was only so long you could plunge your head into the sand for, at least if you were a Mikaelson. The truth was going to hit eventually and if he continued to wear those rose coloured spectacles it would only put Tatia in further danger. Elijah felt his heart aching at the thought but she had been right about it all. Stubbornness and an innate desire to keep those he cared for safe would only get him so far. Not even an Original could battle Father Time. Eventually all things except for them died. If giving Tatia what she desired would allow him to selfishly tip those scales just a little further out of kilter he would willingly do it. For him, for Lukas, for her.
Had the shoe been on the other foot he would have given up what Esther had damned him with in a heartbeat. It would’ve broken the promise of always and forever but it would never have broken his tie to his siblings. It just would’ve shortened it somewhat. Elijah turned his face into her touch, his lips skimming the base of her hand as his lips curved. ”Just one of the reasons?” he asked, trying to lighten the mood slightly. ”Honestly, I would give anything for us to remain together.” That meant overcoming the barriers in his mind, the fear that he would again cost Tatia something by holding on to her love for him. Thanks to Esther, to his own hunger, he had cost Tatia the years of watching her son grow. Lukas was a grown man now, a warlock who had lived almost as long as the man who had taken his mother from him. Drawing in a breath at her assurance that it would mean a lot to her too, Elijah slowly nodded, almost giving his assent. None of this was ever going to be easy but at least this way he was going to give her some way to fight against whatever would inevitably come. ”Then we shall do it, whenever you are ready. This time your life will be yours to do with as you will.” And if that continued to include him for the next dozen centuries it would be a boon. Lifting her hand, Elijah pressed his lips to it. ”We somewhat derailed our day,” he managed with humour in his words. Tipping his head, he indicated the path into the trees that started only yards from the front of the car. ”From here it’s all on foot. Do you remember this spot?” The last time they had started along the path it’s origin had been their village, not the side of a two lane road.

The future was something that Tatia had been unable to stop herself from thinking about quite a lot it seemed. She was glad that she’d had the chance to experience life as a human once more even after Nik’s ritual had resulted in her dying for a second time but the idea of becoming a vampire was something that had been playing on her mind more and more lately and she had even talked to Elena about it to see whether she had been considering the same thing. As it turned out she had been and that had made Tatia feel a lot better about it. She knew that she didn’t have as much on the line as Elena did, after all the other girl had a brother and aunt who were both mortal and would live normal human lives while Tatia had a son and boyfriend who were both immortal and could quite easily end up losing her for a third time if something bad happened. She would be lying if she said that a part of her hadn’t hoped that more children might be an option in the future given that she had missed out on watching Lukas grow up for the most part but she had accepted that that wasn’t going to be on the cards for her when she had realised that she still loved Elijah even after everything that had happened. She knew that she could have refused to forgive him for it and move on with her life but that wasn’t who she was. She knew that what had happened wasn’t his fault, it was the bloodlust that his mother had cursed all of them with. She didn’t blame him one bit and even though being with someone else could have meant that she would have the chance to live a normal life she didn’t want that either, not when there was a chance that she could be taken away from her son again. She had two people that she had been considering doing this for as well as a lot of the friends that she had made since she woke up in the woods outside of Mystic Falls so it wasn’t a decision that she had taken lightly. Now perhaps wasn’t the best time to bring it up given that they were meant to be going on a date but it had been weighing on her mind for a while and Tatia already felt like a weight had been lifted now that she had managed to get it off her chest. Now she was free to enjoy her day with Elijah and she knew that she wanted to do just that. “That’s right,” she grinned. “There are a few reasons why but I don’t want you letting it go to your head by telling you what those are,” she teased, knowing full well that he wouldn’t do that anyway. As he said that he would give anything for them to stay together, Tatia brought her hand up and ran it down his cheek gently before pressing her lips against his. “I know you would,” she said, her smile gentle as she looked over at him. It wasn’t going to be easy but she was certain that she would be able to get through it with the support of the people she loved by her side. “I want to get the end of the school year out of the way but then I’ll be ready,” she explained, not wanting to tempt fate by asking Elijah to turn her sooner only to end up losing control while she was in a school full of students. She was already toying with the idea of going on to college with the others but she would at least have some time over the summer to get used to her new life before starting there and she knew that that could make all the difference. Feeling a smile touch her lips as Elijah kissed her hand, Tatia felt her cheeks flush red slightly. “Sorry about that.” She had distracted Elijah it seemed but thankfully they still had plenty of time left for whatever it was that he had planned. Looking around them as he asked if she remembered the spot they were in, it took a few moments for it to register but then Tatia’s eyes widened in surprise and a gasp escaped her lips. “Are we where I think we are?” she asked, keeping Elijah’s hand in hers as she took a few steps forward before turning to face him. “This is the path that used to lead to our special place, isn’t it?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

A relief had come with the thought of never losing Tatia. The weight that had been on his shoulders from the moment he had found her on the road into town shifting in a way that no longer felt as though it would one day fall and crush his heart. Hearing from her then had opened up the memory of what he had done to her in his head. For a thousand years he had pushed it from his thoughts under his mother’s guidance, not allowing the cracks to show at the thought of what he had done to the first woman he had ever loved under the terrible strain of that first hunger. Once awareness had dawned Elijah had started to feel the fear under that crazed surface. It would never happen again with his hands but there were so many others ready to target his family. His own family would never touch her, they would stand between her and the world. As a human it might not be enough though, such fragility could be crushed in an instant. As much as he had wanted to believe that it could not happen Elijah had known in his heart that Tatia was right. If he wanted to keep this, to keep her, there was only one way to do it and in the end he agreed. How could give this up and retreat into that darkness when there was such light having back those that they had lost? The spring in his step, the lightness in his chest, it had all started again with her. Elijah felt it rise now, amusement chasing that darkness back until he was smiling against the soft skin of Tatia’s palm.
Elijah made a disgruntled little grumbling sound as Tatia teased him. It wasn’t a sound most ever would’ve heard, the buttoned up, noble Mikaelson shell only cracking with those he trusted to see the vulnerable centre of him. He pursed his lips, touching them to the pulse in her wrist before he drew back an inch. ”You’re worried for my ego?” he asked. ”I can guarantee it’s lanced quite well, quite often. In fact it could probably do with a little inflation.” In truth it had taken enough knocks over the years to never reach the levels of pride and arrogance he had seen in others, including his own family. Nobility and the desperate need to shield his family kept it there, but like with everything else in his life, it had its cracks, the waters ready to flood from the dam under the right pressures. His voice went a little hoarse with his honesty. Elijah reached up to take her hand in his own, to use it to draw her to him. ”You are the one in control of it all. If it is at the end of term then I’ll be ready.” It would give them time, he thought as he settled his mouth to hers gently, for Tatia to grow used to the change, for him to as well. Breathing out, Elijah shook his head lightly as she apologized. ”We still have the day,” he assured her. It would be a blessing on top of the agreement they had come to, a reminder of what they’d had, what they would have for an eternity after this. Drawing Tatia from the car, Elijah led her towards the path into the woods, one that had marked itself on his mind indelibly a thousand years ago. ”It is, although there was no road carving its way through here the last time we were here. I thought we could take an afternoon there, together as we once were. Wait, I prepared a basket.” Elijah let go of her hand to return to the car. He opened the trunk and removed the wicker basket the bakery had prepared for him. There was a faint look of chagrin to his smile as he returned to her and took her hand. Slowly, easily, he led her along the path towards what had once been their place away from the others.

Tatia had been looking forward to being able to spend some time alone with Elijah away from everyone else. They often spent their nights at the Boarding House but with so many people around privacy wasn’t always something that they got a huge amount of and it was something that she missed. It felt like it had been a while since they had last been able to do something like this and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. It was so easy to get wrapped up in the supernatural drama and forget about everything else but Tatia knew that she didn’t want it to be like that any longer. She and Elijah had another chance at being in a relationship and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. She had already died twice and even though Elijah seemed open to the idea of turning her she was conscious of the fact that right now she was still human and she could be taken from him at any time. That wasn’t something that she wanted to happen again, she didn’t want to leave Elijah, Lukas or anyone else that she loved behind ever again, and she knew that she wasn’t going to waste the chance that she had been given. Things were a little strange given that she was still in high school and Elijah looked older than she did but he was still the same man that she had fallen in love with all those years ago, albeit with much more of a complicated history than she ever would have imagined, and she knew that he deserved to be happy just as much as anyone else did so she was glad that they had the chance to do this at last. It had been clear to Tatia from the day they found each other again that Elijah didn’t tend to let too many people get close to him but he had let her back into his life and for that she was grateful. The grumbling sound he made as she teased him was enough to bring a smile to her face and she nodded as he asked if she was worried about his ego. “Definitely,” she nodded before pressing her lips to his as he spoke again. “When you put it like that it might not be such a bad thing,” she said, bringing her hand up and letting it rest gently against his cheek. She knew that he had been through so much and if there was anything that she could do in order to make it better for him then she knew that she would do it in an instant, even if it was something as simple as inflating his ego a little every now and then. Things with his family weren’t easy and she had seen Elijah take more than a few knocks during the time that she had been back so she knew that he deserved better than that. “I’m glad,” she said sincerely as Elijah said that he would be ready if it was at the end of the term that she wanted it to happen. “I want this but I don’t want to rush into it either. High school is tough enough so I would rather get that out of the way first,” she admitted. It had been her choice to go so that she could sell the story that she and Elena were twins but the truth was that she had enjoyed it and she was looking forward to being able to see it through to the end. All Tatia could do was nod as Elijah said that they still had the day. She knew that he was right, they had plenty of time to spend together now and she hoped that it would be a sign of what was to come as well. “You really have thought of everything, haven’t you?” she asked, her smile returning as she turned back towards the car and watched Elijah pull a basket out of the back. “I love you, you know that?” she asked as he took her hand once more and they headed along the path. There had been a weight over the two of them for so much of the time they’d had together since he had found Tatia at the side of the road. One pressure always following another, lurking over the two of them like a dark cloud that would occasionally open up and try to swallow their lives for a time. The worst day had been when he had watched as the brother he had always believed still had a one handed grip on his humanity tore her heart from her chest. It was a fate he’d once tried to save another with her face from and had failed then. He had failed a second time when Niklaus had completed the ritual, it had been the thought of a third, possibly irreversible time that had coaxed him into agreeing to what Tatia had proposed. In a way that agreement had lifted the weight. There was a chance it would only be for a short time but if there was one thing he’d learned over the centuries it was to take those light moments when you could get them. Elijah knew that there would be time for more for him later, but for now Tatia was still human, things were still finite. It put a particular spin on things, had you growing grateful for what you could have while you had it. The trip out to the woods was intended to be one of those things before Tatia had momentarily brought a gravitas to it. That had lifted with the agreement they had come to, leaving room for that light to fill the car and for the grumble to slip out of him as Tatia had started to tease.
Elijah knew he could’ve pouted about it but the sound he had made already had Tatia smiling at him. He sighed, settling his other hand over his heart while he kept his other settled over her hand. Dark eyes followed up to meet hers as he smiled, the expression quite unfamiliar to some, but not her. ”I had expected you to say the opposite,” he murmured. ”I can assure you, it would certainly not expand too far.” His siblings were always prepared to make sure it wasn’t the case. Nobody could cut you quite as deeply as family could. Over the years they’d done it to one another time and time again, allowing others to get caught up in it to their detriment. In a few months’ time the chances of him losing Tatia to anything would be vastly reduced, that weight gone from his shoulders. Elijah squeezed their joined hands gently. ”We have the time for you to do that. None of it will happen until you’re ready.” It would give him the time to speak to his brother too, to find a way to make this happen in the least traumatic way possible for Tatia. For now it could be a bridge in the distance, for them to cross when they reached it. For now there were still a way off and with the agreement made, he could take Tatia out into the woods for the picnic this trip had really been played around. Elijah smiled guilelessly as he shrugged. He reached up as shifted the basket to his other hand and shut the trunk. He reached for Tatia’s then and used it to lead her along the path. Even after all these years it still ran through the woods in the way it had a thousand years before. ”I’ve had plenty of time to plan to make it perfect,” he admitted. Lifting their joined hands, Elijah kissed the back of hers. ”I do,” he breathed. ”I love you too and no matter what is to come, nothing will ever change that.” It had been true for a thousand years and would be true for a thousand more.

The fact that it was senior year meant that everything was going to change soon and Tatia had accepted that at the start of the year. She wasn’t sure exactly what was going to happen after graduation but at the end of the day she knew that she wanted to live her life to the full. She had already died twice and she knew that asking Elijah to turn her was a big step but it was something that she had been thinking about a lot lately. Right now there were so many things that could take her away from Elijah and the rest of her loved ones and that wasn’t something that she wanted to risk. She wanted the chance to stay with them all even if that meant making a choice that she had never thought that she would make. Becoming a vampire wasn’t ideal but it would give her the chance to stay with the people that she loved and that was what she wanted more than anything. Tatia hadn’t known how she was going to ask Elijah and she would be lying if she said that the thought hadn’t scared her but she felt much better now that she had managed to get it off her chest and she knew that she was now free to enjoy the rest of their day together. Elijah had gone to the trouble of planning something special for them, something that she hadn’t expected at all, and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. She loved Elijah and she always had done, that hadn’t changed, and she knew that it might have taken them a while to figure things out but now they had and they were happy together and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. It still amazed her sometimes that Elijah still loved her even after all these years but she saw it in his eyes every time that he looked at her. It had been different for her, even though she had died a thousand years before she was still in love with him when he woke up in the woods and even though she knew what that he was the one that had taken her life she knew that he hadn’t been in control back then so she didn’t hold it against him. He had proved to her time and time again that he wasn’t a monster, that he was still the same man that she had fallen in love with all those years ago, and the fact that they were making it work meant the world to her. “Now where would the fun in that be?” she teased, her smile playful as she looked over at him, turning her hand so that she could give his hand a gentle squeeze. Elijah had always been good at keeping himself grounded and that hadn’t changed but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t still tease him about it nonetheless. “Thank you,” she said gently, her smile turning genuine as she leaned over and stole a kiss. Elijah was one of the people that she trusted most in the world and she knew how difficult it was going to be for him to turn her so she knew that it would never dream of making her do anything before she was ready. He had never been anything other than respectful to her and it was one of the things that she loved about him. Walking with Elijah along the path, Tatia squeezed his hand gently as they walked. “Well I really appreciate it,” she assured him as they walked. She had never expected him to do anything like this but it meant a lot to her that he had done. As he said that he loved her too and that it would never change, Tatia felt her smile return. “I’ll never get tired of hearing that,” she admitted. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

He had stolen so much from Tatia. Not these modern joys, the dances, the airs, the graces, the conveniences. There was an appeal to each, an enjoyment they could elicit but in the grand scheme of things, they were mere drops in the ocean. No. On the night that his hunger had left him draining her, it had been her future that she had taken, a promise she had made to her son broken. After months of dwelling upon it all, with Tatia’s help, Elijah had come to the conclusion that there had been no way he could’ve stopped himself that night. The hunger had been too new, the beast inside of him untrained and feral. It could have been his own mother or a complete stranger standing there bleeding and still he would’ve pounced. Years later control had come but it had taken experience and a great deal of pain and regret to get to the point where he mastered the hunger and not the other way around. Tatia’s acceptance of that had been a balm to his conscience. It wouldn’t erase the past, it would’ve give her back what he had cost her but it had given them a future they may not otherwise have had.
When they had truly reunited he hadn’t realised that this sort of thing was in just future but as Tatia was herself, Elijah was trying to make the most of it all. He might not be able to say the same thing in the end, for now though he was doing all he could to put the smile on Tatia’s face. He had been successful, he thought, his lips pinching at the corners as he returned her smile. ”I’m sure you would be able to both find some and spare my ego,” he assured her. He squeezed her hand back all the same. There was no worth in ego when all you were doing was foolish yourself and that was something he had been trying to cure himself of. Having Esther’s rules finally revealed in his head by Tatia’s return to him that was becoming easier with every day. Taking responsibility for who he was and what he had done over the years. It had stripped away the indignities of the ways he had been fooling himself and had allowed him to start making inroads with his siblings. The truth could be a powerful unifying factor.
With it came a weight off of his shoulders. The future would come soon enough, Tatia’s life protected by the same spell they had been living under for centuries, for now it would be a blip on the radar of their future. Elijah squeezed her hand back, using the connection to draw her closer to him, his shoulder brushing hers lightly as he led the way down familiar paths. New ones crossed it, some that had been there now lost to the new growth that had sprung up at various times in the last thousand years. ”You’re welcome,” he drawled lightly. Elijah released her hand for a moment, lifting his hand to settle it gently around her shoulders as he leaned close to brush his lips against the side of her head. ”That makes two of us. I think I first felt it here…” he admitted, as he stepped through a small copse of trees and into the sheltered space that had one been theirs. ”There,” Elijah said hoarsely, setting down the basket at the edge of the space, stepping behind her to settle his arms around her and draw her back against him in satisfaction, ”under the rhododendrons. They were blooming and petals were in your hair.” He had already started to fall to her at the celebration, the firelight painting her skin gol but it had certainly been here that it had turned to more.

This wasn’t a future that Tatia had ever thought that she would get to have. Her life had been taken from her over a thousand years ago after Elijah and his family were turned into vampires and it had been taken from her for a second time during the ritual to free Niklaus’ werewolf side. The second time had at least been on her own terms, she had agreed to be a part of the ritual so that Elena’s life would be spared and even though it had broken her heart to think that she would be leaving the people she loved behind again but she had been feeling like she was living on borrowed time ever since she was brought back the first time. Now, however, things were completely different. Now she had her whole life ahead of her to spend with Lukas, Elijah and the other people in her life that she had come to love and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She felt a little bad about blindsiding Elijah with her questions about becoming a vampire but it was something that she had been thinking about a lot lately and she knew that the time would be right after graduation. She didn’t have to see high school through to the end if she didn’t want to but she knew that she would regret it if she didn’t see it through to the end. She was going to have options after graduation, she could head to college with Elena, Stefan and the others or she could travel with Elijah and Lukas but either way she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. Right now she just wanted to spend the day with Elijah and make the most of being able to spend some time with the man she loved. They had been through so much together and for a while after she was brought back she hadn’t thought that she would be able to move passed what he had done all those years ago but over time she had come to realise that it wasn’t his fault after all and now they had managed to put it all behind them and move on. Things were better now and she knew that she wanted it to stay that way. Elijah’s words were enough to daw a laugh from Tatia and she gave Elijah’s hand a gentle squeeze in return. “You know how I feel about you,” Tatia said, hooking a finger under Elijah’s chin before pressing her lips against his. She had fallen for Elijah a long time ago and even though things had changed a lot since then her feelings for him hadn’t and she knew now that they never would. A smile touched Tatia’s lips as Elijah kissed the side of her head and she looked around them for a moment as he spoke. “Our day in this clearing made me realise how I felt about you too,” Tatia admitted. “That night at the festival I saw a side of you I had never seen before and I saw it again here. For the first time it was like you didn’t have a care in the world. I’ll never forget the smile you had on your face the whole time we were here; I haven’t seen that smile for a while.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The darkness, the unpredictability was always going to be there in their lives. Wishful thinking or luck could perhaps push it aside for a time but it would always be, just like the oceans and the very air they breathed. Elijah knew that there was nothing he could do to escape, no reason to brood over it now, no matter how it bubbled in the back of his brain. You could watch it on the horizon, prepare if you needed to but at the end if the day if you wanted to live not just exist, you had to push on regardless.
His fingers laced with Tatia, making his way through the woods with the knowledge in mind that she would soon be beyond harm allowed to more than he would’ve expected when her revelation had tightened his gut into knots in the car. Those thoughts had slipped away, his smile broadened, a faint chuckle of his own emerging. Elijah nodded, allowing Tatia to draw him in as she hooked a finger under his chin. ”I do,” he confirmed softly. ”And I love you too.” The promise was hushed against her lips as they kissed. A thousand years and the tragic fall out of his turning had not changed that. They had made their choices in life and despite all that had happened, they had were keeping to them.
Not so far from here their eyes had locked for the first time, his heart beating rapidly as they had, squeezing in his chest in those first flashes of love. A young man without a clue of what was to come. There’d been so many rough years since, blood soaked and violence filled, but it all seemed to melt away now as he led Tatia back to the clearing where they had spent time then. Gnarled trees and an flowering underbrush scenting the air as he kissed the side of Tatia’s head. ”I suppose it had a magic in a way, or at least gave us the space to see what there was between them.” A snort rolled from him. Elijah shook his head before settling his chin against her shoulder. ”The side of me that could have broken your toes with my dancing?” Not that it had been the same as it would’ve been now. They had trailed around one another then, touches so small but so telling, while his family had been all around them. Niklaus had fallen for her then too, Tatia ending up the first woman to have to choose between them.
Elijah’s throat worked as he thought back to why he’d finally looked like he didn’t have a care in the world then. Mikael’s temper had been quieted by the celebrations, none of them were on edge waiting to see when he would again blow up at the son that had not been his. ”With you I was free,” he admitted hoarsely. ”I could see a future with you, one that wasn’t at the whims of Mikael’s temper.” Setting the basket down by their feet, Elijah turned Tatia, settling his hands on her arms. ”You’ll see it more, you have my word.” His lips curled into it now as he drew her in to him, touching his lips to hers in a way that made even this place of peace drift from his mind.
