It had taken centuries for Elijah to be able to rationalise Mikael’s burning hatred of his children. In those first frantic centuries all they had known was the pursuit, the constant fear that their father would find them and slaughter them, convinced that the children he had once purportedly loved were little more than monsters. His parents were the ones to transform them and yet the moment they had Mikael’s view of them had changed. Had Esther been alive she undoubtedly would have tried to stay her husband’s hand as she had once done when protecting Niklaus but his mother was long dead and the man she had cuckolded undoubtedly driven as mad with grief over that as he was the anger he harboured towards his children and the son his wife had born out of wedlock. Mikael had grieved, Elijah knew he was capable of that. He had felt the loss of their first born daughter, had moved across the world to escape it, and both he and Esther had grieved their youngest child. When he and Henrik had reunited here in Mystic Falls his brother had offered to intercede when it came to their father, to attempt to give them the peace they had not felt since they had first fled from this place. Elijah had turned his brother down then, certain that it would do little to help but perhaps Henrik had been on to something. Mikael was maybe not beyond being reasoned with … and perhaps it was the same with Niklaus. Right now they were all waiting for the moment Niklaus would return to begin tearing this town apart again but there was still something of the boy he had been within him and maybe Henrik would be the one to find him and talk him around in a way none of the rest of them had been able to.
Reason had rarely overruled temper when it came to his father. Mikael had always been the first to lash out when hurt and had made certain that Niklaus had known just how different he was to his brothers and sisters. Elijah’s jaw tightened at the memories of just how hard Niklaus had tried to please him. He shook his head, sure of his father’s motives now. ”He wasn’t affectionate to the rest of us but Niklaus was the only one he treated that way. There was never an ounce of kindness for him, he took out our mother’s adultery on the product of it.” And they had all been powerless to stop it. Losing Henrik when Niklaus should have been taking care of him had only rubbed salt into his father’s wounds. He’d assured his youngest brother that what had happened was not his fault but that had been the pivotal moment for everything that had happened since. ”Our father would have killed him eventually,” he said bluntly. ”Probably not by his own hand but he would’ve pushed Niklaus to the point where it would have happened in some other way. I still fear that we have not been enough to keep the humanity in Niklaus alive.” Every time he thought he caught a glimpse of it in his brother Niklaus would do something to make him question its continued existence. ”I fear he will never be happy and when they inevitably betray him Niklaus will only see it as proof of the world being against him.” Then more anger would follow and others would suffer the way the thread at the ritual had. Elijah slipped his arms around Tatia’s waist as he looked down into her eyes. ”I’m glad he had others there to help him pick up the pieces. I know the girl was alone that day. I want to reach out to her, to ensure that Niklaus has not turned her into a mirror image of himself. Will you go with me to see her, to try again?” Cast adrift as something most saw as monstrous, it would be easy for the girl to fall into bloody ways.

After everything that had happened, a part of Tatia hoped that perhaps now she and Elijah might just get the chance to have a normal life, even if only for a little while. There was a time when she had thought that they could have a real future together, that they would get married one day and have children of their own, brothers and sisters for Lukas to play with, but that life had been taken from them. Now she knew that she still wanted to have a future with Elijah she just wasn’t sure what that future would hold for the two of them. Elijah would be frozen as he was forever and so would Lukas while she continued to grow older. It was something that she knew she was going to have to give some serious thought to but for the time being at least she knew that they had other things to worry about. The way Elijah had disappeared after the ritual had made her think that perhaps he had regretted what had happened between the two of them but now she knew that he had just been trying to protect not just her but the others as well. She knew that it couldn’t have been easy for him to watch her die for the second time even if he had known that it was coming this time and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to put him in that position again. There were no secrets between them now, everything was out in the open so there really wasn’t any need to keep things from each other, and she hoped that it would stay that way. She didn’t know everything that had happened to Elijah after he became a vampire but she knew enough to realise that it couldn’t have been easy for any of them and she knew that she would do whatever she could to make things better for him. As Elijah spoke, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that. During the ritual he gave me the chance to back out and have him use Elena instead but I didn’t take it. He still cares even if he tries to hide it, that doesn’t seem like someone who has lost touch with their humanity to me,” she explained. There had been a few glimmers of the Niklaus that she had known back before all of this began so even though he seemed to have lost his way the last thing she wanted was for Elijah to give up on him after all these years. The two of them had always been close and she had already come between them once so if she could stop anything happening to come between them again then she knew that she would do it. “That might be so but in time he will see that he isn’t alone. He still has you, Rebekah and Henrik and I will do all I can to be there for him too,” she offered. No one deserved to be alone, that was something that she had learned a long time ago, and she honestly hoped that sooner or later Niklaus would see that everything he had been searching for had been right in front of him all along. As Elijah asked if she would go with him to see the girl that Nik had turned into a vampire, her smile was gentle and she took his hand in hers. “Of course,” she nodded. “She is lucky to have you looking out for her.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Hearing the truth from Tatia’s lips at the side of the road had finally revealed to Elijah just how much he’d been fooling himself over the last couple of centuries. It had been easy to lay the blame at everybody else’s door, to see himself as nothing but the peace-maker, the janitor of his siblings’ mistakes. He was still mostly human, while theirs had been buried under a thick layer of monstrosity. Only that had been his mind’s delusional way of justifying his own crimes, at least that was the way it had seemed when the guilt over his role in Tatia’s death had hit. It was not simply a case of this being black or white, or being human or monster. The world had to be drawn in shades of grey and that meant not simply labelling things. Had Niklaus been void of his humanity when he had slaughtered three people to release the side of him their mother had bound for his own safety? Most likely, but that didn’t mean that his brother had always been void of it, or would remain void of it in the future. Niklaus had done his best by Marcellus and undoubtedly, with the right cause, his brother could do the same again. Elijah knew that he just needed to find that cause for Niklaus and allow others to see what he was still capable of. He’d never imagined that they had already been able to see it in the time he had been in town before the ritual, surely they couldn’t have been considering what Niklaus had done. Kidnapping, torture, murder…
… and yet it seemed he had given Tatia a choice at the last moment. Elijah couldn’t say whether or not it was the love his brother had once held for Tatia that had made him act so, but it was definitely the indicator he feared might no longer exist. Dark eyes sought out Tatia’s as she told him of what Niklaus had done, studying her face as the knot around his heart loosened slightly. ”It shows that he has some heart still at least. He would have used her if you had told him to, without compunction he would have killed her.” Elijah wasn’t sure how much of that heart he would be able to see if and when Niklaus decided to return here. An abyss had opened up between the two of them with his choice not to stand by his brother’s side during the ritual and it would take more than a simple apology or a few years in a coffin to build a bridge across it he feared. He would try to build it though, if it were possible. Elijah hadn’t given up on his brother before and even now, after Niklaus had killed Tatia and the other two to complete his ritual, he wouldn’t do it. Letting out a long breath, Elijah shook his head. ”I want to believe that Niklaus will understand that in the end but how much damage will he cause in the meantime?” A part of him was glad that the damage would be caused in another city, another part felt guilty for the relief he found in that. Elijah tightened his fingers around Tatia’s as she took his hand. ”It’s the least I can do considering what my family has already done to her. She’ll need people around her now more than ever. You all went through so much.” And he hadn’t been there to help Tatia pick up the pieces that had inevitably been left scattered by her death, by her resurrection.

Tatia didn't know what the future was going to hold but one thing she knew for sure was that she wanted Elijah to be a part of it. The two of them had been apart for so long before she was brought back and even after the ritual he had kept his distance and for a while that had troubled her. Now, however, she knew the reason why and deep down she knew that she should have taken into account how her death during the ritual would have affected him as well. This time it had been her choice, she had decided to give up her life so that Elena could live and while it was true that she hadn’t wanted to leave the people she loved behind she had known that it would be worth the sacrifice if it meant that Elena got to live a long and happy life. Even though the two of them were only pretending to be twins to explain why they looked so alike Tatia couldn’t deny that she considered Elena to be family and after everything the girl had already been through she had wanted to at least try and make sure that she could spare the girl from being used by Niklaus in the ritual. There hadn’t been anything that she could do to stop him using Riley or Grace but she had at least been able to make sure that Elena was safe and that had given her some comfort, as had knowing that Elijah and Lukas had supported her decision. She knew now that she should have realised that Lukas wouldn’t give up and let her go again without a fight and even though the third chance at life had been a surprise at first she knew better than to waste it. The fact that Niklaus had given a choice before he killed her rather than just going ahead and doing it hadn’t been lost on Tatia, Elijah had told her before that he thought that the brother he had known back when he was human was long gone but the truth was that Tatia wasn’t so sure. She knew that Niklaus had been through a lot while he was growing up, he had always been searching for something and it sounded like he still was but he was still able to show her mercy and give her a choice despite being so close to achieving something he had wanted to do for hundreds of years so she knew that had to count for something, or at least in her book it did anyway. “I don’t doubt that he would have but it would have delayed things further and yet he still gave me the choice. I don’t think the Niklaus we both knew is completely gone after all,” she admitted. Had he been then he would have killed her without thinking twice about it but he hadn’t, he had given her a choice and in doing so he had showed her a glimmer of the man that he once was and she hoped that she might get to see that man again someday. As he spoke again, her expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I’m afraid I can’t answer that but I do hope that he will figure it out before too many more innocent lives are lost,” she said at last. She didn’t know what Nik would do if he was unable to create hybrids but she knew that she just had to hope that he would see reason soon enough and end the bloodshed. “She will have people around her, we’ll make sure of it,” she assured him as she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Who knows, perhaps some good will come of what happened and she will be able to have a fresh start.” She wasn’t sure just how likely that was but if something good could come out of the ritual then she knew that it would have been worth it. Given all that he had learned since he had first spotted Tatia, Elijah knew that he should not be so quick to condemn his brother. Niklaus had undeniably done some horrific things in the last thousand years but his brother was not the only one amongst them to have blood on his hands. Rebekah’s, Kol’s and his own were far from spotless. They had all committed crimes, usually in the name of protecting family. This time Niklaus did not have that as an excuse, the ritual had been all about power, about wrestling it back from their parents finally. For so long Elijah had seen the merit in that, had supported his brother in his quest but the moment he had started to fall for Katerina, as he had fallen for Tatia all those years before, Elijah had known that it was no longer a simple matter of performing a ritual. It would require lives taken and not just those of faceless peasants. Elijah hadn’t known how he was going to stand and watch Katerina die, in the end there was a relief in the fact that he hadn’t needed to. That relief had lodged under his breast bone, right alongside the sorrow he’d felt at the fact that she had turned herself to avoid the fate Niklaus had decreed for her. In a way he supposed that Tatia had done the same thing, sacrificing her life to attempt to change the fate of others. Only in her case Tatia had gone to her death knowing that it would save Elena, and give Niklaus exactly what he had wanted. For her it had appeared as if there were no escape and so she had done the only thing she could do to guarantee that things would work out for the others.
Elijah couldn’t say if that was why his brother had given her the choice at her last, to let someone else die in her stead, or if Niklaus did still have that well of humanity buried deep within him. Listening to Tatia now it was obvious that she thought it was the latter, as he had done for centuries. Elijah hadn’t been sure, not with all that Niklaus had done before he had left town with Stefan but a part of him hadn’t wanted to let go of the idea, to truly mark his brother as a monster. He made a low sound of agreement in his mind, still caught between the two images but at least considering the former for now. ”We can only hope. I would not want to see Niklaus as lost as our parents were.” For one thing it would give Mikael too much satisfaction, confirming the image he had always seen of the child he had been forced to raise as his own. As he always had, Elijah would try and help his brother back on to the path, to steer him true and in return be blessed with his forgiveness. ”We will keep our fingers crossed and hold on to that hope together. Niklaus will return and perhaps this time he will finally be happy with our lot.” As they had when they had lived in New Orleans, they finally had something other than their familial bond worth protecting. Elijah would not only extend that protection to the woman he loved, it would be extended to those in this town caught up in his brother’s wake of destruction too. Drawing Tatia to him by their joined hands, Elijah made a sound of agreement. ”Perhaps we can all find a fresh start in this. Lord only knows we deserve one now. This is our starting point, our line in the sand.” The very start of everything that they should have been able to have a thousand years ago. Drawing in a deep breath, Elijah drew Tatia in those last few inches and wrapped his arms around her.

When she was younger Tatia had never thought that her life would end up like this. She had died only to be brought back a thousand years later by someone who still remained unknown to her and she had been brought back for a second time after being used as a sacrifice in Niklaus’ ritual. She had been given far too many second chances already, more than she deserved, but she knew better than to take them for granted. Thanks to Henrik and Lukas she had another chance at life, she had the opportunity to be there for her son the way she should have been all along, she had the chance to see what a future with Elijah could hold and she also had the chance to spend more time with the friends she had made during her time in Mystic Falls. She could have so easily been kept apart from the people she loved for another thousand years if not for the rest of eternity but they had refused to give up on her and she knew better than to let them down by not living her life to the full. She didn’t know what the future was going to hold for her but she was certain that Elijah would be a part of it now and as far as she was concerned that was all that she needed to know at the moment. There was a time that she had thought that they would end up getting married and having children together but that chance had been taken from them a thousand years ago. She knew that they would never be able to have a family of their own now but as long as she had Elijah and Lukas in her life then she knew that that was good enough for her. Tatia didn’t know what was going to happen when Niklaus eventually returned to Mystic Falls and found out that she was alive after all but she knew that they would cross that bridge when they came to it. Until then they had each other and she knew that she wanted to make the most of whatever time she had with Elijah, Lukas and everyone else that she loved. For a moment she had seen a glimmer of the Niklaus that she had once known and loved and she refused to believe that he was gone for good, she just hoped that Elijah wouldn’t give up on him either. “I don’t think that will happen. Niklaus might have done some awful things but he has also been through a lot and I don’t think that can be forgotten. At least now he has the chance to find out who he really is,” she offered. Mikael had put Niklaus though so much and now, as it turned out, the two were never truly father and son after all, or at least not by blood. She could only imagine how difficult that must have been for Niklaus to get his head around but now that his werewolf side was free he could at least figure out who he was and she hoped that he wouldn’t waste any time. “I hope so,” she nodded. From what Elijah had told her Niklaus had been searching for something for so long when he had a family that loved him right in front of him. For his sake and theirs she hoped that he would eventually realise that he’d had everything he had needed all along. As Elijah drew her to him, Tatia felt a smile touch her lips. “This is our chance to have a future together,” she agreed, wrapping her arms around Elijah in return and letting her head rest against his shoulder. “I’m so glad we’re going to have the chance to do this. I love you.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

They had an opportunity. After all that had happened since Henrik had first snuck out at the full moon to see the wolves with Niklaus, that was something Elijah had feared he would never have again. The loss of Tatia had put the final nail in the coffin of hope, until Henrik and Lukas had managed to pry free not only that one but so many of the other nails in the coffin that had held him for so long. Niklaus was not the only one who had closed them all off, who had locked them away from the lives that they could have had, each of them had been guilty of doing that themselves. Elijah knew he was certainly the guiltiest of doing that. He had laid the blame for his personal situation at the feet of his siblings for centuries. He was tethered to them, had been unable to find lasting happiness away from them because of the vow they had made on the night they had been turned. It had all seemed so logical and yet now forced to look at it from another angle from someone who had seen all of this from both the inside and the outside Elijah knew that his logic had long been cracked. This was not an either or situation, his happiness was not entirely dependent on being free of them all, or upon Niklaus’ actions. If this was what he truly wanted, if Tatia was who he truly wanted, then he needed to reach out and take what fate was now offering them with both hands. Despite being immortal Elijah knew that life truly was too short to waste.
Whatever would come to pass when Niklaus returned, Elijah was determined to see bridges with his brother mended, some truce reached that would keep this town and those his brother had tried to kill in it safe. His brother had cared little for anybody in his fervent desire to complete his ritual this time, the only concern shown in those final moments whether or not Tatia was truly willing to sacrifice herself for one of her descendants. She had tried to convince him now that the single act meant that Niklaus was redeemable but Elijah knew that the odds were not certain. He had to have faith, to believe that all his brother had been through had not broken the human part of him entirely. Elijah’s smile returned faintly at the thought Tatia posed, the brown eyes that had been troubled softening for a moment. ”He is someone Mikael never truly gave him credit for.” Perhaps someone none of them had ever really expected. Who knew how far his brother would spread his wings not that he had the one thing that had been denied to them for so long. ”If he is not then we will plan our next move as a family. We will not leave anybody out of it this time. It is all of our lives here, not just Niklaus’.” And no longer just their family’s. This was Tatia’s life now, Lukas’, those used in Niklaus’ ritual, their friends … so many lives entangled with their own. None were entwined as tightly as the woman he drew close to him now. ”We will not waste a moment of it … and if in any way I ever try to … feel free to give me another verbal wake up call.” The one he had received today had shaken him from his brooding hermitage. For a moment Elijah rested his cheek against the dark silk of Tatia’s hair, his eyes focused at nothing across the room. Slowly he turned his head, kissing the spot his cheek had occupied before he eased a finger beneath her chin to raise it. ”It is what we both deserve. I love you too and I swear with all I am, that will never change.” Softly, purposefully, Elijah kissed her.
