Finding Tatia on the side of the road as he’d made his way back into Mystic Falls for the first time in a thousand years had stripped something away from him, that much had been obvious the moment his mental block had been shattered. Elijah would never have admitted it out loud but he’d been left vulnerable, that cynical, worldly veneer that had built up during those centuries like a pearl around a speck of dirt had suddenly been gone. Fumbling with words in a way that was unusual for him, turning against his siblings in a way that had resulted in violence when he’d tried to free Rebekah from her coffin, it was all out of character for the man he’d become, but not the man he’d been the last time he had been hovering in this same place with Tatia. Then he had been a naive young man, one who believed that he would have twenty or thirty years with the young widow who’d caught his eye, good luck prevailing. He’d felt his brother’s pain acutely when Tatia had chosen him, shattering Niklaus’ heart in the same way his own would have done had the shoe been on the other foot. That naive young Elijah Mikaelson had believed that perhaps now he could right a wrong once again, he could stop his brother from taking Tatia’s life and something could be worked out. The second chance they had been given wasn’t to work that way though, not if Tatia had her way. She would hold her head high and hand herself over, ending what might’ve been between them once again on her terms. Elijah knew that he could’ve argued with her words until the moon was high in the sky and his brother was at the door but she was resolute in a way he’d only pretended to be over the centuries.
His heart wouldn’t stop aching over it anytime soon, not when its shield of scar tissue had been stripped away but deep down inside it was obvious that he couldn’t let that hurt boil over where Tatia could see it. This was already hard enough on her. ”Or how undeserved they might be?” he asked softly, thinking of his brother now rather than himself. He was perhaps no more deserving of the love of this woman but it had been given to him all the same. Elijah swallowed hard, his eyes taking in the change on Tatia’s face. ”I hope they know of the sacrifice being made for them.” It would be a heavy weight for Elena to bear but given what was being given up for her to live it was only right that she be aware of it all. ”Those first few days I would’ve been glad to rid myself of the image of what happened the night we were ... turned ... but now I don’t want to forget a minute of my time with you, no matter how it’s shaded.” In a few short weeks they would be all that he had left of Tatia again. He wouldn’t regret taking the hand that Tatia had extended, or allowing himself to be towed along the hallway towards the stairs. Elijah also wasn’t planning on regretting sweeping Tatia up in an echo of what might’ve been had they been able to wed. Dipping his head for a moment, he touched his brow to hers as he climbed. ”I carried the knowledge that you loved me with me for five hundred years the first time before I allowed myself to feel it again,” he admitted hoarsely. ”Even after, yours was the love I always felt.” The love that had always been able to shred his heart once more with a thought, not again this time though. Feet sure despite the distraction of Tatia’s mouth on his, Elijah mounted the final step, picked his way along the hallway with preternatural senses. A shift in balance and he was reaching for the door, pushing it open. He slipped inside and carefully set Tatia back to the floor. When his eyes opened again there was a warmth in them. ”When are the others due back?” he asked hoarsely, wanting no interruptions for this time they would have together.

Had things worked out differently then Tatia knew that she and Elijah could have gotten married and had a few children together. It was something that she had thought about so often back then, she had always loved the idea of the two of them being a family and raising Lukas together, even giving him brothers and sisters one day, but that wasn’t the hand that they had been dealt in life. Instead she had died and both Elijah and Lukas had been left to go on without her. Even now there were still times when she found it incredible that they were still alive and that she had been given the chance to see them again so long after she had died but not a day went by when she wasn’t thankful that she had been given that chance. She still didn’t know who had brought her back or why but no one had approached wanting anything from her so she could only assume that either the person responsible didn’t want anything from her or that it simply wasn’t time yet. Either way she knew that her days were numbered, she had been given a second chance at life and while she wanted nothing more than for it to last as long as possible, she also knew that she wanted to do something good with it, The moment she had learned that Niklaus needed either her blood or Elena’s for the ritual he intended on performing her mind had been made up safe in the knowledge that she couldn’t let the girl who had been so kind to her since they had met lose her life for something that had started with her blood a thousand years ago. In a way it had come full circle and while it was true that Tatia didn’t want to leave the people she loved for a second time she knew that that was better than the alternative and it was at least comforting to know that Elijah understood her decision. Between him, Stefan, Damon and Lukas she knew that Elena would be safe and that knowledge was something that she knew would give her the strength that she needed when the time came. For now, however, she just wanted to make the most of the time that she had left and as Elijah spoke, she shook her head. “I will tell Lukas when I can but Elena and Stefan aren’t to know. They will only try and talk me out of it if they do,” she said carefully. From what she knew about Elena she was pretty sure that the girl would take the same stance as her, that she would hand herself over in order to stop anyone else from dying. Tatia knew in her heart that she couldn’t let that happen so it was something that needed to be kept quiet and she hoped that Elijah would respect her wish. She would find a way to say goodbye to each of her friends in her own way without actually telling them about her decision. “I will never forget a moment of my time with you either, never forget that what happened back then wasn’t your fault,” she said gently, knowing that the last thing she wanted was for Elijah to get lost in that pit of guilt once again when she was no longer there to pull him out of it. He had shown her time and time again since she had been brought back that he was still a good man, that he was still her Elijah, and she knew that she didn’t want to be the reason why that man was lost to the world once more. A Elijah said that hers was the love that he had always felt, Tatia felt a smile touch her lips. “It is good to know that you never forgot what we shared,” she admitted. Even when she had felt scared after first learning that Elijah had been the one who had taken her life she had still loved him and that was something that she knew would never change. It wasn’t long before Tatia was standing on the floor of her bedroom and she moved around Elijah to close the door behind them. “Not for hours, they are going to be out late tonight,” she assured him as she let her hand rest against his cheek. “We won’t be disturbed.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The corruption of innocence and youth was a theme many a poet had turned lyrical over the centuries but Elijah doubted that there had been many tragedies as absolute as the turning of he and his siblings. It had not only been their own lives turned foul but in the immediate aftermath and for centuries afterwards the ripples of that night had spread, darkening over lives, stripping away the innocence that should’ve been allowed to shine. His relationship with Tatia was one of those things snatched away from them, that bright shining possibility gone as his hunger had consumed him. In comparison with modern relationships it had been utterly pure and naïve. Those falling in love did not jump straight into bed then, lust curbed by the pressure of the society around them. Marriages tended to be absolute, his mother’s infidelity not withstanding, women cleaving themselves unto their husbands on their wedding night, mating for life in most cases. The loss of a husband requiring a woman to throw herself upon his pyre and follow him in to death. Those who chose not to so often seen as pariahs despite the absolutely sound reasoning behind their choice. When he had chased Tatia through their village that day he’d not lain with her, their entire physical relationship wrapped up in those tender, youthful kisses. It was only years later that he would allow himself to sate that other hunger. Tatia had borne Lukas by then, had been a wife but the two of them had not been allowed to see their lives pan out that way. Now Tatia was determined not to watch Elena’s life be caught off in that same prime. The girl would be given the chances they had not been given, her and Stefan’s path left wide open for them by a woman willing to sacrifice herself. Elena would not be there to see Tatia die in her stead, would not learn afterwards what a narrow escape she had. ”Not before,” Elijah murmured, adjusting his words as he shook his head in turn. ”I promised you I would not do anything to stop what you are doing for Elena but afterwards … they deserve to know what you did for them, what you have given up to give them the chance we did not have.” It would not be fair for Tatia’s bravery to go unnoticed, for what she had again lost to go unrecognised. Elijah was determined that he and Lukas would not be the only ones to mark her passing. Tatia had left a mark on him a thousand years ago and was leaving another now. Settling a hand over his heart, Elijah tried to reassure her. ”That is one of the things I’ll hold on to. Your forgiveness and assurances.” When the guilt came to call those words would echo and so would the memory of this night. Elijah’s mouth curved into a faint smile. ”You were the first woman I loved. There has only ever been two but you were the one to take my heart, the one who will always have it.” For once it felt whole in his chest. Looking down into Tatia’s eyes, Elijah his head into her hand to press his lips to her palm. The house was now theirs for much of the night and he was not going to let anything stop him. Lowering his head to kiss her once more, Elijah let his fingers drift to begin to shed her clothes. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the dim light of Tatia’s bedroom it was easy to imagine that the ritual was still centuries away. Elijah lay curled on his side, watching the moon light fill and shade the hollows of Tatia’s face, the body he had slowly uncovered and worshipped hours before. Propping his head on his elbow, Elijah studied each curve, traced his fingers over them, along those edges of light and shade. Still he wanted to rail against the idea that there was a deadline to this, that he would soon have to watch her die again but the promises he had made last night had to stand, for Tatia he had to stay his hand and allow Niklaus to go ahead and kill her if he could find no other way. Closing his eyes for a moment Elijah shot off a prayer to a God he had no real faith in, asking for this not to be the last time, for her life not to be snuffed out. Please let her live.

Growing up Tatia had always known just how precious life was. Back then it had never been expected for anyone to live more than a few decades and if they did then more often than not by the time they reached old age they were often cast aside by others in the village. Even so, Tatia had always dreamed of falling in love and growing old with the man she loved by her side and there was a time when she had thought that she might be able to have that kind of future first with her husband and then later with Elijah. Both chances had been taken from her and even now she knew that her time was short so she was determined to make the most of it. No matter what happened she knew that she had lived her life to the full and even if the second chance she had been given was to be short lived she was at least grateful that she had had the chance to make things right with the people she loved. She had been able to be honest with Elijah about how she felt and she had been able to see the man that Lukas had become. She loved both of them dearly and she couldn’t deny that just the thought of leaving them behind again hurt but she also knew that she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if Elena paid the price for something that had started with her such a long time ago. That knowledge didn’t make the thought of leaving them any easier but she at least knew that she was doing it for the right reason. “I would rather they didn’t know at all,” she admitted even though she had a feeling that Elijah would never let that happen. She knew that she had to protect Elena from what Niklaus was planning but she also knew that she didn’t want the girl to have that play on her conscience. “I’m going to hold you to that,” Tatia nodded as Elijah said that he would hold on to those things. She didn’t blame him for what had happened and the last thing she wanted was for him to forget all of the progress he had made in forgiving himself just because she wasn’t around to remind him any longer. “And you will always have mine,” she assured him, a smile touching her lips as he kissed her palm before letting her lips meet his once more.
Even with the knowledge of what was to come, as Tatia laid there next to the man she loved it was difficult to think of a time when she had been happier. There had only ever been one man for her before Elijah and that was her husband. Their old customs dictated that what had happened that evening shouldn’t have but they were living in a new world now, a modern world, and Tatia knew that she would never regret what had happened between them. Just the feeling of Elijah’s fingers tracing over her skin was enough to bring a smile to her lips and she let her head rest him. “That was certainly worth the wait,” she admitted as her eyes opened and she brought her hand up to let it rest against Elijah’s cheek. “I love you,” she breathed as she pressed her lips lightly to his before settling her head back against him once again. “I wish we could stay like this forever.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Torn. Elijah had been feeling that way from long before his mother had turned them. Torn over protecting his brother without stepping into his father’s firing line himself, torn over stepping back and allowing Tatia to choose Niklaus, torn over keeping the vow, about putting his own needs and desires above that vow. Torn now over whether or not to make Elena Gilbert aware of Tatia had done in order that she be able to live the life that Tatia had not been given the chance to. There were always two sides, pulling at him, threatening to tear him apart like the child in the Judgment of Solomon. To be caught in the middle between what he desperately wanted somebody else to know and keeping his word to the woman he loved. Elijah knew that in the end he would do as Tatia had implored, he would bite his tongue and would forever more remember the sacrifice she had made and what he had lost thanks to the brother he had chosen a thousand years before. He could already feel that spot in his heart hollowing out once more, filling with the loss before it had even happened but Elijah nodded all the same at Tatia’s admission. ”Then I will hold my tongue,” he promised, his gaze dropping for a moment. ”I imagine Stefan might figure it out for himself, but I will not tell him what you did willingly.” He would keep his word about remaining silent and he would keep his word that he would not slide back into the bottomless pool of guilt he had been mired in since the memories of taking Tatia’s life had come back. A smile refused to come at Tatia’s words but Elijah nodded to them all the same, his hand remaining on his heart a moment longer. Then as they reached Tatia’s room he made it clear that the heart that lay beneath his ribs still belonged to Tatia, as hers belonged to him. Elijah lifted his hand, settling his own fingers over her heart for a moment as she kissed him. There was no way he could forget this, no way he would ever let it go. ________________________________________ This was going to be one of the moments that would play on a loop in his mind. The one perfect evening he would have with Tatia before his world yet again was shattered by his family and their need to escape the shackles put upon them to keep them in check. Elijah had been silent as they had lain together afterwards, studying the woman in his arms, trying to commit all of this to memory. He sensed as much as saw the smile that eventually curved Tatia’s lips, moving gracefully then as she brought her head to rest against him. His own lips curved while his eyes remained shut, a faint vibration of laughter in his chest. ”It absolutely was,” he promised. ”I’m glad we chose not to wait a moment longer.” The touch of her hand against his cheek had dark lashes fluttering over, dark eyes meeting those that looked into his as Tatia eased herself up to him for a kiss. ”I love you too,” he whispered in return, lingering for a moment to trace his lips over hers once more. As Tatia laid her head back against him, Elijah tilted his head, touched his lips to her forehead, to the tumble of dark hair that was spread over his shoulder, over the pillows. ”If fate finds a way to stop Niklaus from completing the ritual then we may be able to … at least for a time. I swore I would not seek a way to try and talk you out of your decision, but it won’t stop me from hoping this won’t be the only night we have together.” Elijah’s brow furrowed faintly as he trailed his fingers over the curve of Tatia’s ribs. Hopes were so often foolish, the ramblings of a mind not strong enough to make something happen but now it was all that he could hold on to.

So much in Tatia’s life seemed so uncertain at the moment but if there was one thing that she could be certain of then it was the way she felt about Elijah. She had loved him before she died and she still loved him now that the truth had come out. For a while she had kept her distance, too afraid of what the man she had given her heart to had become, but in time she had realised that he was still the same Elijah that she had fallen in love with all those years ago and that had helped her put what had happened behind her. She knew how difficult it was for vampires to resist the temptation of blood so she couldn’t hold it against Elijah for losing control back then and he seemed to have much better control of himself now which really was all that mattered. She couldn’t deny that it was still a little strange knowing that Elijah was frozen the same age as he had been before she died while she continued to grow older with each passing day but she knew that that wasn’t something to worry about now. With Niklaus’ ritual approaching she wasn’t sure how much more time she would have with Elijah and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to spend it worrying about things that were out of her control. “Thank you,” she said sincerely, glad that Elijah was willing to respect her wishes and keep quiet about what she planned to do so that the others wouldn’t feel guilty about it. At the end of the day it was her decision and it meant that Elena would be safe so as far as she was concerned it was just the way it had to be. She felt bad about burdening Elijah with the weight of her decision but she knew that she couldn’t just leave him or Lukas without saying goodbye again and she hoped that he meant what he said and truly understood her decision because it wasn’t one that she had taken lightly. Seeing the look in his eyes, she brought her hand up and let it rest gently against his cheek before pressing her lips to his. “Don’t be sad Elijah, we have tonight so let’s make the most of it,” she said, her smile warm as her eyes met his.
The turn that evening had taken was unexpected but it was definitely a welcome one and with Elijah’s arms around her Tatia couldn’t help but feel perfectly content. In that moment it was like nothing existed other than the two of them, they didn’t have to worry about the ritual or the sacrifices that Nik was planning on making and they were able to just focus on the two of them. That was something that Tatia wished they could have done before but she knew that everything happened in its own time and she would never regret what had happened with Elijah. “So am I,” she admitted as he said that he was glad they hadn’t waited any longer. As far as she was concerned they had waited more than long enough already but now no matter what happened Elijah at least knew how she truly felt about him. As he said that he loved her too a contented smile touched her lips and she pressed a kiss to his shoulder as he spoke again. “That is a nice thought,” she admitted, her skin tingling slightly where his fingers traced over her ribs. “If I make it through the ritual then I would like every night to be like this. We’ve wasted so much time already, I don’t want to waste anymore,” she said gently. Before she died they had done things the way that was expected of them, they had courted and for a time they had been happy but then fate had ripped them apart only to throw them back together a thousand years later. They had been given a second chance and she knew that she didn’t want to waste it. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

There should be a weight with a passing, some mark left on the world when someone was taken from it. Elijah knew it was rarely the case that names would be whispered centuries later, let alone thoughts of people carried in hearts. Fame could keep your notoriety but most lives lived simply, people were merely gone. Having only been back a short time Elijah imagined that Tatia had not made too deep a mark on most of those she had encountered but those months she had been in Mystic Falls had only served to score her existence deeper into his soul. Given the chance he would have had it scored deeper into those whose lives she was saving but Elijah had given his word now and he would keep it. Tatia would not be forgotten, not by him, never again, and not by Lukas. Trying for a faint smile, Elijah lifted his head, met Tatia’s eye. He was a man who could keep his word and a man who would not toss away the opportunity he had been given to sulk over it. The sadness could come later, when his brother finally succeeded in tearing his life apart and this night was the memory he held to the tightest. Elijah’s smile faltered as Tatia’s hand settled against his chest, dark eyes growing serious for a moment before they fluttered shut with the kiss. ”No sadness, not tonight. I promise.” He meant every word of it, finding that smile within himself again as his kissed Tatia again. That would come with the ritual, with the loss of this incredible woman.
Elijah had kept his promise. As he had made love to the first woman who’d ever held his heart the ritual had been the furthest thing from his mind. It had crept back afterwards, in the quiet afterglow where he’d lain awake, studying the woman in his arms. Amusement continued to trace Elijah’s voice as he touched his lips to her forehead. ”It was a long time coming and perhaps a blessing that it was now and not then, the village was far less comfortable.” And far less private. They had all known the moment that Tatia had made her choice, word getting around the small set of clearings rapidly. This was far more private but also briefer than he had ever hoped his time with her would be. Elijah was prepared to dream for more but the realist in him whispered that things were never that simple. ”We’ll cross our fingers and hope for the best. This won’t be our last night. We will have more, fate will see to that.” Slipping his hand down to find Tatia’s, Elijah crossed her fingers and then his own. Even without openly fighting against his brother he would not allow the ritual to continue without some resistance. Until then … Elijah’s mouth creased into a broad smile as he shifted in the bed, rising over Tatia to kiss her again. ”We should continue to make the most of tonight…” There was time yet, before the Salvatores returned home and reality called upon them both once more.

There had been so many times after Tatia had realised that it was Elijah who had captured her heart that she had thought about this happening. She had only ever let one man get close to her the way he had and that was her ex-husband. It saddened her to know that their days together were numbered, there was no telling when Niklaus would make his next move so she knew that she needed to make every moment she had with Elijah count. Right from the start there had been something there between the two of them and she knew that they had wasted far too much time already. She had held back initially as she hadn’t wanted to do anything that would hurt Niklaus and after she and Elijah had gotten together the first time they had taken it slow. Now she held no such reservations, they were living in completely different times now and she knew that their union wouldn’t be frowned upon the way that it would have been back then. It had taken those in their village a long time to accept the fact that she hadn’t followed her husband into the afterlife the way she had been expected to but over time they had moved on from it and they had also been accepting of the fact that she and Elijah had started seeing each other. Had she remarried then she knew that it would have likely been a different matter entirely but at the end of the day she was living her life for herself rather than for the approval of others. Being with Elijah now she couldn’t help but feel perfectly content in spite of everything that was hanging over their heads. She had never felt as safe as she did in his arms and as he spoke she felt her smile return. “That’s true,” she laughed as she let her head rest against his chest. “This is much more comfortable,” she agreed. The living accommodations from back then definitely weren’t something that she missed and she wouldn’t be surprised if Elijah didn’t miss them either. The whispers and looks that would have followed would have made things all the more awkward but at least now they had some privacy and she knew that no one living at the Boarding House would mind in the least. They all knew how she felt about Elijah, it had never been a secret and even though she knew that it might be a little weird for some of them they had never objected to him being around so she knew that it would be fine. As Elijah covered her hand with his, Tatia kissed his hand gently. “I hope you’re right,” she nodded. “If I am lucky enough to get another chance I will find you again no matter how long it takes,” she assured him. She had no idea what the future had in store for either of them and she knew that the chances of her being brought back to life again were slim but if it did happen then she knew that she wouldn’t stop until she found Elijah again. As Elijah shifted position before kissing her, Tatia kissed him back. “I like the way you think,” she said, her smile returning as he lips met his once again. “Will you stay with me until morning?” she asked, hoping that he wouldn’t feel like he had to rush off once the others returned home. Even if he did, she had no intention of letting him. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The Elijah Mikaelson now sharing Tatia’s bed was in very few ways the same man he had been when he’d first fallen for the smile now lighting up Tatia’s face again. He had been hardened by the loss of her, changed irrevocably on some cellular level by what his parents had done in desperation. Unsurprisingly after a thousand years of life he was no longer the virgin, the naïve young man he had once been. There had been other women in his arms, although not for years after he had lost his first love, most barely leaving a stain upon his memory, on a few marking it more deeply. There had been days with Celeste in New Orleans, when it had seemed as though they had perhaps found a home for the first time after centuries on the run. Evenings spent in candlelight exploring one another. Losing her had torn open some long scarred part of him but it had still been little more than a patch on what he had felt when he had carried Tatia to his mother, pleading for her to save the woman he loved. Looking down at Tatia, his own mouth curved faintly with amusement, Elijah knew there was no greater chance of bringing her back now than there had been then. If Niklaus got his way he would lose her and what they had shared tonight would be another of those memories, burning coal bright in that part of him that had scarred shut again until he had driven into Mystic Falls and found his past standing on the road in front of him.
Tonight those coals weren’t burning hot enough to sear the very heart out of him but they had banked inside of him, leaving a warmth behind that Elijah suspected would only fade when Tatia was no longer there. The feeling reminded him faintly of the fire that had always stood in the middle of their village, the one they would gather around. Elijah could remember his eyes meeting Tatia’s across that fire, his boyish heart warming with each smile. Undoubtedly most in the village had been able to tell what was going on between them and would have known the moment they took that next step. The village had been small, people living on top of one another in what was now considered primitive conditions. Here they had been undisturbed, the bed soft unlike the one he had once slept upon. Elijah made a low sound of agreement, stretching faintly beneath the cool sheets. ”And far more private too. We would have had to steal away into the woods to try and have some time alone if this happened before we were wed.” There were traditions to keep then, a way of doing things that Tatia had always been prepared to ignore. She would not give up, if there was a way back after the ritual she would find it and that meant he could not give up either. ”I won’t give up on it happening again,” Elijah promised, tracing his fingertips over the curve of her lips. ”Something wanted to give us another chance, it might be a case of third time lucky.” It might also have been a case of nature torturing the Mikaelsons again but Elijah was trying not to let his mind drift in that direction. At the very least they had tonight and he had promised not to waste it. Elijah’s mouth curved against hers, a hand rising to slip into the dark silk of her hair. ”I will stay,” he promised. ”I don’t want to waste a moment of tonight. I want to wake up here with you in the morning.” He wanted to hold on to that dream for just a little longer. Soon it would be all he had left of her. Pushing the thought from his mind, Elijah captured her mouth with his own again, letting his mind spin away from the thoughts of dread tormenting him.

Tatia had always been a rather traditional person while she was growing up, she had wanted to live her life the right way and be happy but when her husband died she had started to realise that not all traditions should be upheld. She was still only young herself back then, no more than fifteen, and she had been expected to follow her husband onto his funeral pyre. Had she been older and Lukas not been just a baby then perhaps she would have done so but as it stood she had decided to stay with her son and raise him the way she and her husband had always planned rather than end her own life because it was expected of her. That was the day she had turned away from the customs of those in her village and it had taken a while for those around her to move on from that. They hadn’t seemed to care that she was the one who was grieving the loss of her husband and had become a single parent at the same time, all they had seen was that she hadn’t done as was expected of her and for a while things had been difficult in the village but eventually it had all started to blow over. She hadn’t known if she would ever marry again but she had always hoped that she would find someone special who would help her learn to love again and she had found that in Elijah. With him she had been able to see herself having a future, he hadn’t seemed to care that she had already given birth to another man’s son and she had hoped that they would be able to raise Lukas together and even have children of their own one day. She had still held onto the notion that she would want the two of them to have been married before anything else happened between them but that could have changed and now things were certainly different. Now their days together were limited and she knew that she didn’t want to waste a moment of the time that she had left with Elijah. Even so what had happened was a big step for her but being with Elijah now she knew that she had never felt as happy. After she had learned that Elijah was the one who had taken her life she had felt scared of him but in her heart she had never stopped loving him and no matter what happened next she knew that she was never going to regret what had happened between them. She knew that her second chance at life could be cut short at any moment but she’d had the chance to reconnect with the man she loved and with her son and she had made some new friends along the way so she knew that she would leave without any regrets. “And what makes you think I would have broken that tradition?” she asked, her tone light and teasing as she spoke. The truth was that she didn’t even know herself if she would, she had wanted to get married again first but she had already broken one tradition and for Elijah she felt certain that she would have likely broken more but it was still good to be able to tease him about it nonetheless. As he said that he wouldn’t give up on her being given another chance again, a smile touched her lips. “Neither will I. If there is a way for me to find my way back to you then I will fight for it with everything I have,” she assured him. She didn’t want to leave Elijah, Lukas or the others but ever since she had been brought back she had been unable to shake the feeling that she was already living on borrowed time and considering the only two people who could be used for one part of the ritual were her or Elena then there really was no question in her mind about who it should be. As Elijah said that he would stay, she lifted her head and pressed her lips against his gently. “I’m glad. I have spent too many nights here without you already,” she said, her smile returning as he kissed her again. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Time and time again Elijah had lamented the future that had been destroyed for them all on the night that the wolves had killed Henrik. Seeing all that he had seen, experiencing more than any could have in his time, Elijah knew that he would’ve exchanged all of this to have stopped Niklaus from giving in to Henrik’s pestering that night. There would have been time to see the wolves when his youngest brother was old enough to do so more safely, time for Henrik to grow, to have a family of his own, for all of them to do as people did in those years. Their lives might not have been long, they rarely were in a time without modern medicine, in a time that was harder on those living in it, but they would not have been marred with what their mother had done with them. Elijah would have waited to be wed to Tatia for a moment like tonight, would gladly have endured a few more years of celibacy if necessary to have what his heart had truly wanted. Those in this time would have had no inkling of who they were, not even those who had come from them and undoubtedly there would have been an unbroken line of lives that could be strung back to his own, to their own. The Salvatores would have been left to their human lives, as would thousands of others. The natural order of things would have been preserved instead of corrupted and this town … it likely would have been peaceful now instead of hovering on the brink of more blood shed thanks to his family and the grief they continued to bear even after both Henrik and Tatia had been returned to life.
Nostalgia could be a beautiful thing but all of those chances they’d originally had were gone the night that Henrik had died. Now Elijah knew that he couldn’t let their second chance, no matter how brief it might be, go to waste. Holding on to that thought he had allowed Tatia to lead him to bed that night, to be together as they should have been those thousand years before. It was the Elijah he had been then teasing now, that Elijah whose brows rose as he looked into Tatia’s eyes. ”I was a young man in the first blushes of love, waiting that long would surely have killed me,” he teased, fluttering his lashes guilelessly. For her he would have waited half a life time, would have wanted to do it all right. Elijah’s hand sought Tatia’s, a fingertip tracing the line a ring would have taken, if tradition would have placed on there then. ”We will both fight,” Elijah promised, pressing his lips to hers to seal the bargain. If he had another thousand years on this earth he would spend each and every one trying to find a way back to her. ”You deserve so much more than my family has given you.” What people deserved and what they got were two very different things. Just a few short months ago he had believed himself not even worthy of Tatia’s forgiveness. Now he had been a far more precious gift and would treasure it for as long as possible, drawing the night out to a dozen if circumstances allowed. ”The Salvatores may need to grow used to another guest,” Elijah murmured. It was the least he could ask them for considering that Tatia was sacrificing her future for Elena’s, for theirs. Pushing the countdown from his mind, Elijah tugged the sheets back up around them, sinking into the kiss and losing himself in what they had left of the night.
