Ric had grown used to spending Christmas alone after Isobel left him but this year was completely different. For as long as he could remember he had wanted a family of his own and now he finally had that. Things were often a little crazy at home with four teenagers and a pregnant Jenna all under the same roof but the truth was that Ric wouldn’t have it any other way. He had never liked letting anyone know just how lonely he was before he and Jenna got together and he started spending more time with her, Elena and Jeremy but the truth was that for a long time he had been missing any sense of purpose from his life. He had become a hunter so that he could kill the vampire that had killed Isobel and for a while that had been his sole focus so his world had come crashing down the day he had learned that Isobel hadn’t died at all, or at least not for long. Instead Damon had turned her into a vampire because she had chosen to leave him behind and after learning that he had finally felt ready to move on with his life. He hadn’t expected his relationship with Jenna to take the turn that it had done but now he had the family around him that he had always wanted so even though not all of the turns his life had taken to get him to where he was now were pleasant ones they were necessary and he was a lot stronger for it. Christmas Day was always going to be a little hectic and after they all opened the presents in the morning the kids had all headed upstairs to get dressed which left just Ric and Jenna alone downstairs. “Well, that was a lot rowdier than I thought it would be,” he chuckled as he started to clear away the bits of wrapping paper that were scattered all over the floor given that he had already started cooking the food. There were still a few presents that hadn’t been unwrapped, things for the twins that their friends had bought that they had agreed that they weren’t going to open until they brought the girls home, but there was one more present that Ric had to give and once everything was cleared away, he turned to look at Jenna. “I have one more present for you, would you like it now?”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna understood that some people would actually wind up with an impressive headache from how rowdy the house was, but Jenna loved it. She loved just how nice it was. Loved that it was nowhere near silent and that was something she appreciated more than anything. She watched as the kids tore into the presents like there was no tomorrow. Jenna also had her own opened presents on her lap and she loved every single one of them and she was quite happy that everyone liked the presents she got for them. She had been so worried that they wouldn't like it but apparently, she was fussing over nothing really. She also really appreciated the gifts for the twins. It meant a lot to her. She knew that she was going to keep them safely in their little wardrobes for when they are brought home. She honestly cannot wait. She was counting the days on her fingers at this point. Jenna could feel her heart flutter at the thought and honestly? She had gotten emotional about it enough times already and she didn't want to abruptly cry right now out of happiness or else it might seem really cheesy or corny. She didn't want to worry Ric either, he'd put up enough times with her weird mood swings. So, she bottled it down and slowly put on the bracelet that she'd received as a gift, knowing that she was going to cherish it.
Jenna pushed herself up to make his way over to Ric to help him pick up the mess on the floor. "I know. It was so strange, but in a good way." Jenna said with a grin on her lips, hoping that by next Christmas Day, the twins would be here to open their own gifts too. Jenna looked at Alaric with a rather surprised look before she nodded her head a few times. "Yes please." Jenna said with a soft smile resting on her lips. "I'd love to see it now." She was already filled with excitement to see what it was.

Ric hadn’t realised just how much he missed family Christmases until that morning but now he knew that he never wanted to go back to just celebrating the day by himself. Having Jenna and the kids around had made it better than he had ever thought that it could be and next year Josie and Lizzie would be with them as well so he was already looking forward to being able to celebrate the holiday with them. It would have been nice if they could have celebrated with them that year but it wasn’t to be so he knew that they were just going to have to wait a while instead. The house was busy enough with four teenagers in it anyway and Ric had a feeling that the whole day was going to be the same. He had taken it upon himself to do the cooking but he knew that he would end up roping them all in to help with certain things throughout the day anyway. Right now he had some time alone with Jenna and Ric knew that it would probably be a while before he got that again so he knew to enjoy it while it lasted. “Definitely in a good way,” Ric agreed. “I didn’t realise how much I missed all of this until today,” he added. He had grown so used to spending days like this alone that he had almost forgotten what it was supposed to be like. Seeing the joy on the faces of Jenna and the kids as they opened their presents had made it all worth it, though, and even though the twins weren’t ready to join them just yet he knew that they would be able to do something similar when they did and they opened the presents that had been bought for the two girls. Picking up the last of the paper, Ric put it in the bag with the rest before picking up the small wrapped box that had been left on the side. Turning back to Jenna, Ric held it out to her. As she took it from him he made his way across the room and took a deep breath to calm his nerves before turning to face Jenna who had her back to him. He knew that she would be confused when she opened the box and found that it was empty and it was as he heard the wrapping paper tear that he pulled the ring Kyle had helped him pick out for her out of his pocket and got down on one knee. That was where she would find him when she turned around and he felt a nervous smile work its way across his face as he looked up at her. “I didn’t know what I was going to find when I moved here. I wanted to find answers but I found more than I could have ever hoped for. I found the love of my life and my best friend and I know we’ve done this the wrong way around but I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” he said, his eyes locked on hers as he spoke. “Jenna Sommers, will you marry me?”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna, after her last toxic relationship, really did think that there was no such thing as love. It just seemed like something out of a fictional movie where there'd be one hell of a cliche story about how they fell in love and skipped into the rainbow with their hands clasped tight. What she had experienced was simply nowhere near that. There was no fireworks going off every time they kissed, there was no emotions in his eyes whenever he'd talk to her and there was certainly no "real" love whatever the hell that meant. After her relationship, she really did come to the conclusion that she was not fit for love or relationships. That she was off better single where she would take control of her life as an independent woman who had no need for a man. That was all until Alaric came along and literally swept her off her feet and she found herself instantly falling in love for him. She loved the way his lips would form a smile whenever they'd talk, she loved the sound of his voice, the feeling of his lips pressed against hers, how gentle and loving he was with her. How he showed her that love actually exists in such a toxic world. How he made her open up to him about everything... He was not just her boyfriend, but her best friend too. She could easily tell him whatever she had on her mind without fearing his reaction or anything of the such.
Jenna was happy that Alaric no longer spent his days alone. Happy that he had a family to call his own and people who genuinely loved him. She really wanted nothing but the best for him and wanted him to be happy. Jenna's eyes lit up when she was handed a small box to her. She took it gingerly and began her task of opening it up, but her confusion soon became visible on her face when she saw that the box was actually empty inside. She turned around to look at Alaric, probably to chastise him for teasing her like that but what she found had her breath hitching as she stumbled upon the sight of Alaric on one knee, her eyes widened almost to the size of saucers as she looked at Alaric then to the ring, then back again to him, her lips parting and closing as tears soon filled her eyes to the brim. She chuckled through her tears when Alaric pointed out that they were doing it the wrong way and when he finally said that question, Jenna nodded her head countless times. "Yes. Yes!" Jenna wiped away her tears, knowing that she looked like a proper hot mess in that particular moment but she found out that she didn't really care that much as she threw her arms around Alaric and hugged him tightly before she leaned back to kiss him for a few moments until it was time to lean back and offer her hand so that Alaric could put the ring on her finger. "It looks so beautiful. I love it." And that only made her cry more. She'd never felt so happy and emotional before. "I love you."

For a few years Christmas had been just another day to Ric. After moving to Mystic Falls and starting to connect with people for the first time in a while he had known that they would have let him join in with their plans if he’d asked to but the truth was that he had still either spent the day holed up in his apartment feeling sorry for himself or he had actually used the holiday as an excuse to go back and visit his parents. This year things were different, however. This year not only did he have Kyle and Abby to share the day with but Jenna, Elena and Jeremy as well. It was a shame that Josie and Lizzie hadn’t decided to join them early so they could take part in the madness too but Ric knew that it was just one of those things. In time they would make an appearance and then things were sure to change again and while he was looking forward to that he was also a little nervous about it at the same time so he knew to make the most of whatever moments he was able to get with his family. He had been in love before, first with Helen and then with Isobel, but what he had with Jenna was completely different. With each of his past loves he had always felt like he was on the back foot and he had never known where he really stood but it wasn’t like that with Jenna. They had found each other after they had both had their hearts broken and even though he had a feeling that no one would have blamed them if they had wanted to keep things casual they had actually decided to give things a go and he was glad that they had done. He had fallen head over heels for Jenna and he knew that there wasn’t anyone else that he would rather spend the rest of his life with. He had spoken to the kids one by one over the last month or so and been given their blessing for what he was about to do, he had even taken Kyle with him while he had gone shopping to find the perfect ring for the occasion, but even so Ric couldn’t help but feel nervous as he got down on one knee. As Jenna turned back to face him he could see the surprise clear on her face and he wanted nothing more than to wrap his arms around her as he saw the tears in her eyes but he knew that if he didn’t say what he wanted to now then he would likely bottle it and that wasn’t an option as far as he was concerned. As soon as he asked the question Jenna nodded and Ric felt all of the worry leave his body in that instant only to be replaced by joy as she said yes. Getting to his feet he wrapped his arms around Jenna then and kissed her passionately, only pulling back when she offered her hand so he could slide the ring onto her finger. Once he had done so he lifted her hand and kissed her finger just below the ring gently. “I love you too,” he said, bringing his free hand up and letting it rest against her cheek as he stole another kiss. “I knew it was the ring I had to get as soon as I saw it. I know how much you love rubies,” he admitted as he brushed her tears away gently. “At least these are happy tears,” he added, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at his fiancée. Jenna returned the kiss with as much passion as she possibly could. She had never felt so happy before and it really did feel as though the world was endless ahead of her. Like anything was possible and that was exactly what she needed in that moment. That feeling that mixed so well with her pure love for Alaric that turned into something much deeper and more serious as they spent time together and went through new conflicts each passing day. It only made them stronger and the mere thought of ending their relationship NEVER occurred to Jenna because she honestly didn't want to imagine how her life would be without Alaric's comforting presence next to her. Everything about him was perfect and he was such a loving man. She was completely and utterly lucky to be loved by him. She felt her heart speed up when Alaric pressed a kiss against her finger which only made her cry harder because she felt so, so happy that words can't even begin to describe the feeling. Her hand moved up to cup his cheek as she returned the kiss before she pulled back to look at her ring which prompted her to start crying like a little baby all over again. "It's really, really beautiful, Ric. It's perfect." Jenna sniffed a few times in an attempt to regain composure.
"They're very happy tears." Jenna turned her head to leave a gentle kiss on the palm of Alaric's hand before she looked down at her finger once again, her smile still visible on her lips. "For how long have you had this whole thing planned?" She asked in a rather curious voice, still sounding like she had cried a ton because that was exactly what had happened to her. She was just really happy and there was nothing that could change that. "I really had no idea but I'm really happy you asked me because there's no one else in the world I'd rather spend my life with, Alaric." And that was the truth. "It sounds like I'm saying my vows now but that's just me saying how I really feel." She said with a chuckle following as she re-wiped her tears again.

Ric had known for a while that he wanted to marry Jenna but the truth was that the idea of asking her had still terrified him. Things hadn’t ended well with Isobel, she had ended up leaving him so that she could become a vampire and live that life instead so he honestly hadn’t thought that he would even want to get married again after that but Jenna couldn’t be more different to Isobel if she tried. With her he felt the kind of love that he had only ever heard about before and he loved the life that they had built together. Even now there were still times when he couldn’t believe that she had taken a chance on him or that she had forgiven him after he had kept the truth about the supernatural world from her for so long but she had. She was an incredible woman and she always made Ric want to be better as well. He honestly felt like he had found his perfect match in her and even though it had taken them a while to find their feet with the kids they had managed it and soon enough they would have two more to add to the mix as well. “You’ve got Kyle to thank as well, he helped me pick it out,” Ric admitted, a smile working its way across his face as he reached up and brushed her tears away gently. “I thought about asking Elena to go with me but I was worried she would let it slip,” he added with a grin. It would have been easier with Elena there since she knew Jenna so well but he and Kyle had made do and Ric was so glad that Jenna liked the ring that he had gone for. “I’m glad,” he admitted as Jenna said that they were happy tears. As she asked how long he’d had it planned, his smile returned. “I started planning it before we moved but I wanted to make sure that all of the kids were on board first,” he explained. It had been important to him to get each of their blessings before asking Jenna and they had all given it so once that had happened he had known that there really wasn’t anything left holding him back. It had taken time to find the perfect ring and it had taken longer for the perfect opportunity to arise but their first Christmas with them all together had seemed like the ideal time and thankfully it had worked out. “I know marriage is meant to come before kids but I wanted to do things right this time,” he said gently. He hadn’t been able to be there for Kyle and Abby while they were growing up but with Lizzie and Josie wild horses couldn’t keep him away. “Even if we weren’t about to have the girls I would have asked you anyway. I never thought I would want to get married again after Isobel but I’ve never felt like this before and I don’t want to waste anymore time not being your husband than I have to.”JENNA SALTZMAN

You’ve got Kyle to thank as well, he helped me pick it out,
Jenna felt a smile touch her lips at Ric's words. "It's really beautiful.' She had a feeling she wouldn't be able to stop looking at it for days. No, years, probably. "He's such a good kid. I'm so happy you both have each other." Kyle had gone through a lot but he pulled through and that was all that mattered to her. She never wanted to see anything bad happen to that kid. He was good and his heart was pure, but there was so much sadness still. She hoped it would ease with time. Hoped. "Oh you know Elena is terrible with secrets." She said with a laugh following.
Jenna shook her head with a gentle smile on her lips. "No, this is perfect. You are perfect." She reassured with a soft smile resting on her lips, her eyes held so much love and care in them. It was clear just how much she loved Ric and how happy she was to get married to him. "Oh yeah, we got the order completely messed up but it's nice to break traditions for once. It's nice to do things our own way. There's no right or wrong when it comes to this. As long as we're happy, that's what matters."
His words really were more than enough to make her start crying again which made her release a noise that sounded like a whine because she didn't want to keep crying like that. "I'd be more than happy to be your wife, Alaric Saltzman. There's no other person I'd be able to love as much as I love you." She whispered as she leaned up to press a gentle kiss on his cheek. "You made my day- actually, no. I'm pretty sure you made my year. Thank you." She whispered as she rubbed his back gently. "I don't even want some big wedding. I just want something small. All of our loved ones here. That's all I care about."

Ric had hoped that Jenna would say yes and perhaps a part of him had known deep down that she would but he had still been nervous about asking her. They hadn’t exactly done things the conventional way throughout their relationship, they had ended up getting caught out by the kids and soon enough they were going to become parents to twins but if he was honest he liked the way things were and he couldn’t wait to meet the girls. Jenna had stood by him through everything that had happened with Isobel and she had also been there for him when he had found out first about Abby and then about Kyle. Anyone else would have walked away but she hadn’t, she had stayed right by his side and he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through any of it without her. She was his rock and he would be lying if he said that the thought of getting married again didn’t make him a little nervous after everything that had happened for him the first time around but Jenna couldn’t be any more different to Isobel if she tried and he knew that things would be different this time. He knew that there was no way that Jenna would make the same choices that his ex had and despite any nerves that he might feel he couldn’t wait to become her husband. “It suits you,” Ric admitted, unable to deny that he was pleased with the choice that he and Kyle had made. “I am too. He and Abby haven’t been in my life for that long but I can’t imagine it without them now,” he added. It was the same with Elena and Jeremy, he knew that he wasn’t their dad but he felt that way and he was more than happy to fill that role when they needed it because the truth was that he loved them like they were his own anyway just like Jenna did. As Jenna spoke again, Ric couldn’t help but laugh. “I know. I’m amazed she managed to keep this one as long as she did,” he chuckled. He was glad that she had though. “I spoke to all of the kids individually first, I wanted to get their blessing,” he explained. He wasn’t sure what he would have done if any of them hadn’t wanted to give it but thankfully he hadn’t had to worry about that. “I like that,” he admitted, a smile working its way across his face as Jenna said that it was nice to do things their own way. “Nothing about us has been conventional but that’s what makes it interesting,” he added with a grin. It didn’t really matter to him what happened when as long as the end result was the same and he knew that this one would make him the happiest man alive. “Same here,” he admitted as she said that she wouldn’t be able to love anyone as much as him. He had been in love before but this was different, things hadn’t always been perfect for them but they always got through it and he knew that Jenna was the one for him. “I’m glad,” he admitted, bringing his hand up to rest against her cheek as she said that he’d made her year. As she spoke again, his smile returned. “Whatever you want, we’ll do it. The sooner the better as far as I’m concerned.” Ric didn’t really mind what their wedding looked like as long as the people they loved were there and he got to marry the love of his life. I am too. He and Abby haven’t been in my life for that long but I can’t imagine it without them now, I know. I’m amazed she managed to keep this one as long as she did. I spoke to all of the kids individually first, I wanted to get their blessing,
Jenna felt a small smile touch her lips as she nodded her head in an understanding manner. Jenna chuckled at his words about Elena as she nodded her head a few times in a silent agreement. "I know, right? She's evolving." Jenna said with a chuckle falling from her lips. "That's actually a really smart move. I'm really happy they agreed." She said with a soft smile resting on her lips, happy to hear that the kids gave their blessings to the marriage. It made things a lot better.
I like that, Nothing about us has been conventional but that’s what makes it interesting, Same here, I’m glad, Whatever you want, we’ll do it. The sooner the better as far as I’m concerned.
"Exactly. We're breaking the norm.' Jenna said with a grin on her lips. "It's good to be different, sometimes." Jenna added a moment later, her smile still soft. The thought of having a wedding did make her heart flip, though. It was with excitement more than anything else. Thee was just no fear because she knew everyone present would be family and people she considers to be family, as well. "Then, I'll start planning from now. See how long it'll take me to put everything together." Jenna said with a soft smile on her lips. "Because like you said, the sooner, the better.' She added a moment later, her heart still beating wildly in her chest due to all the excitement she was feeling. "I'm sure Elena and Caroline would love to help me put something together. Abby too, if she'd like to help." She said with a soft smile on her lips. "It's going to be perfect. I can just feel it."

Getting married again wasn’t something that Ric had ever thought that he would want after what happened with Isobel. She had chosen a life as a vampire over a life with him and that had hurt like hell but things with her had never been easy. With Jenna he had found something incredible and the truth was that he had never felt like this about anyone before. They were already living together and they were also about to become parents so they were as committed to each other as they could be without being married but Ric still wanted more. Jenna was the love of his life and he had known that he had wanted to show her that. “She is. I don’t think she found it easy to keep it from you but I’m glad she did,” he admitted. He knew that it wouldn’t have been easy for Elena considering how close she and Jenna were but she had kept it a secret and that meant a lot to him. “I am too. They all want the same thing and that’s for us to be happy. We’re already a family but this makes it official.” It was an unusual family, that was for sure, but Ric knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. “It is,” Ric agreed with a smile as Jenna said that it was good to be different sometimes. They hadn’t done things in the order that anyone would have expected them to but Ric knew that that didn’t matter. They had done things their own way and he had a feeling that they would continue to do so regardless of what anyone else thought. “That sounds good to me,” he nodded as Jenna said that she would start planning the wedding straight away. Whatever she wanted he knew that he would go along with, all he wanted was for Jenna to be happy and he knew that whatever she and the girls came up with would be perfect. “I think Abby would like that. It would be good for her to feel included,” Ric admitted. He knew that it wasn’t easy for Abby considering that she had lost her mom and no one would ever be able to take her place but she still had people that she could turn to in Jenna and Elena and he knew that he didn’t want her to feel left out. “I can too,” Ric said, a smile forming on his face as he leaned down and pressed his lips lightly against hers.
