Jenna never thought her day would start like that. Her calendar said that she was about three days away from her scheduled birth. So, she still had time to pack up all the essentials for the hospital and such. But, to be fair, she was sort of slacking away. She kept distracting herself with cooking for the family as well as cleaning the house despite knowing that resting was quite important for her. But it sort of distracted herself from any pain she'd often get whenever one of the girls would kick at her stomach. When she woke up, she didn't feel any different. Jenna pushed herself up and made her way to the bathroom, her barefoot warm against the cold tiles. She splashed her face with some water to wake up and took that moment to freshen up with a quick shower to get her ready for the day.
Jenna made her way back to the bedroom where she took it upon herself to put some comfortable clothes which winded up being a nightgown and a long robe on top which she tied at the front. Her hand was on her stomach as she made her way to the kitchen, her steps were careful and slow, finding no need to rush or anything like that. The first kick she felt was when she was eating which nearly made her choke on her breakfast. "I get it, you're both excited to come out, but that really hurt." Jenna chastised whichever baby girl did it. The second kick was when she was putting the dishes in the dishwasher and it hurt a lot more than the second. Jenna made her way over to the beanball they had purchased which helped quite a lot throughout her whole pregnancy. It stayed like that until the night rolled by. What happened next was contractions which she had experienced quite a few times but it was never so ... frequent. It started out happening between five to ten minutes apart. Then, they started happening every two minutes and she knew that much because she had an app that helped her time her contractions.
The contractions were bearable for the most part, but they got worse the longer she waited in the safety of the house. She'd often find a way to distract herself from the pain and as she was making her way upstairs, her water broke and that's when it dawned on Jenna that she was in labor. In labor. It still felt so... surreal but she called Alaric and when he came, they immediately set out to the hospital. It was happening. She called Elena as well to tell her, leaving it to Alaric to tell his kids if he wanted to. Jenna was still not quite ready for the birth, so she was on her hospital bed in the most charming hospital gown ever, strapped into some machinery and the sort. Her pain had dulled and that was due to the epidural she had taken. She felt the urge to applaud the mothers out there who popped the kids out without the help of the epidural, but she couldn't. Jenna felt awful and on top of it, she was hungry but couldn't eat anything other than ice chips. "I look ravishing right now, don't I?" Jenna asked with a hint of a tired smile on her lips as her eyes shifted to settle on Alaric.

Ric had had months to get used to the fact that he and Jenna were soon going to be the proud parents of twin girls but the truth was that the closer they got to the due date, the more nervous he got. He was used to dealing with teenagers, he had plenty of practice when it came to them and between Kyle and Jeremy they often managed to keep him on his toes but when it came to newborns he would be the first to admit that he had no experience whatsoever. How he was going to manage having two of them he wasn’t sure but he knew that he just had to trust that he and Jenna would find their rhythm soon enough. Thankfully they had four kids who could help them out when they needed it and for that he was grateful. Having one baby was enough work let alone two at once but he knew that they would figure it out, they always did. Their friends had been a huge support as well although he would be the first to admit that he could have done without the sarcastic comments that Damon had sent his way on occasion but Ric was still looking forward to meeting their girls despite how nervous he felt about it. It was New Year’s Eve and Ric had had to head out to pick up a few things for Jenna but he was already on his way back to the house when his phone rang. The twins weren’t due for a couple of days so it came as a complete shock when Jenna asked him to get back to the house as quick as he could because she was in labour and he was pretty sure he broke just about every speed limit he drove through on his way back to the house in his hurry to get to her but he didn’t care. Thankfully night had already fallen and most people were probably out partying in anticipation of seeing in the New Year so the roads were fairly quiet. Forgetting all about the bags in the trunk, he rushed into the house and soon found Jenna. Locating the hospital bag he had put together for her a few days before, he slung it over his shoulder before helping Jenna out to the car. The drive to the hospital was much less frantic than the one he had taken getting home and as the nurse got Jenna settled Ric took the time to call Kyle and Abby and tell them what was going on since he knew that Jenna had already told Elena. He asked them to find Elena and Jeremy and for all four of them to get to the hospital as soon as they could before making his way into Jenna’s room as soon as he was given the go ahead by the nurse. Taking the seat next to the bed, Ric took Jenna’s hand in his and felt a smile work its way across his face as she spoke. “You always do,” he assured her. “The kids are all on their way, I bet they’re just as eager to meet the girls as we are,” he added, knowing that Jenna would still be worried about them anyway given that that’s the kind of person she was. “How are you doing, are you ok?” he asked as he brought his free hand up and brushed her hair away from her face gently. Jenna still couldn't believe what was happening. Couldn't believe that she was merely hours away from seeing her children. It felt like it was just yesterday when she realized that she was pregnant. Actually, no. It had been a very long nine months so far and it was filled with so much hardships. Constant mood swings, odd food cravings, back pain, feet pain, insecurities. But she put up with it because she knew it would be worth it in the end. Having the twins running around, being able to hold them in her arms. It all felt so surreal to Jenna, but she knew that she wouldn't change it for the world and she felt so privileged.
Not only was she going to have twins, she had a loving family next to her. They all supported her through it and always made sure that she was okay. Alaric was the first of them and she loved him even more for it. Jenna's tired eyes found her lover's and soon, a smile stretched her lips. "Where's the lie there?" She asked in a teasing manner. "That's really good." She wanted the girls to be surrounded by family, to know that they were adored and loved.
"I feel much better now. I'm just... really jittery." Jenna admitted, her eyes still focused on her lover. "I just realized something..." Jenna started, her lips stretching to form a small smile. "We're really going to start the new year with them." Jenna chuckled, feeling joyed by the fact. It was going to be a really wonderful start to her year. "What 'bout you? How're you feeling?" Jenna asked, her gaze still on Alaric. She knew that she was the one bound to the machinery right now, but she still cared about Alaric and wanted to know how he was doing.

The twins weren’t due for a few more days so Ric had thought that it would be safe to go out and get the things that Jenna and the kids had asked for but as it turned out he couldn’t have been more wrong. He knew that he was lucky not to have been pulled over on his way home but then again given the reason for his speeding he had a feeling that anyone who did catch him would understand anyway. Right now all he wanted to do was to get home to Jenna so that she wasn’t alone and get her to the hospital as soon as he could. He already had two children but he hadn’t had the chance to be there when Kyle and Abby were born and he knew that he wasn’t going to miss being there with Jenna when she brought their girls into the world. He hadn’t known that Helen was pregnant either time but with Jenna he had been there with her through everything so far and he knew that he wasn’t about to let that change now. Before he knew it they were at the hospital and Ric was allowed in as soon as Jenna was settled. As she spoke, he felt a smile work its way across his face. “No lie, I promise,” he assured her. This was the day that they had been waiting so long for but now he couldn’t help but feel nervous and he wouldn’t be surprised if Jenna was feeling exactly the same way. “I’m sure they’ll be here soon,” he nodded, knowing that it wouldn’t be right without the kids there too. He knew that they wouldn’t be able to join them in the room but they were all family to him and Jenna just as much as Lizzie and Josie were so he knew that it would feel wrong not having them there. “It’s all going to be fine,” he said confidently as Jenna said that she was feeing jittery. “You’re going to get through this just fine and you’re going to be an incredible mom.” He knew that it was every new parent’s fear that they were going to screw this up but there wasn’t a doubt in his mind that Jenna was going to be amazing at all of it. He, on the other hand, was probably going to mess up time and time again but he knew that there would be plenty of people around to help out if that did happen. “We are. They weren’t ready to join us for Christmas but they are for this,” he said, a smile working its way across his face as he lifted Jenna’s hand gently and placed a kiss to her knuckles. “I’m nervous but I’m fine. You’re the one I’m focused on, you and our girls.”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna moved her hand to let it rest against her stomach. There was a monitor taped to her stomach to listen to the girls' heartbeats and to also make the contractions visible on the screen. It was really painful but it could've been worse. "I know." She said with a soft smile on her lips. "Even if they arrive a little late, then that's fine too." Jenna added, her voice showing that she was feeling a little tired. She was really grateful that she had Alaric with her. His voice was comforting and so was his presence. It still felt so surreal even though she was on her hospital bed wearing a hospital gown. It still felt as though she was going to wake up at some point and find herself back at home on her bed with nothing happening. "And you're gonna be the best dad." Jenna said with a soft smile resting on her lips. "I know that much." She added a moment later, her eyes finding Alaric's with ease.
Jenna felt her heart soften at the peck left on her knuckles. "I can't wait to see them." She whispered in a soft voice and she knew that she was getting closer and closer as the hours drew closer. "I can see that." She added with a soft chuckle following, her eyes still on Alaric. "M'okay as long as you're with me." Jenna whispered, her voice filled with so much love for the man.
Jenna patted the spot next to her on the bed for Alaric to sit beside her. Thanks to her epidural, she didn't really feel a lot of pain. It was manageable until she started feeling an intense pressure that made her want to push. Her frown dug deeper before her gaze drifted to Alaric, holding onto his hand tightly. "I think it's time. We're finally going to see them... Took them look enough." She said with a breathless chuckle as the pressure increased. She reached for the button to press it to alert the nurses that she was ready. "I know it's probably going to be gross but... Stay here?" She wanted him to be close so it'd be possible for her to hold his hand, to feel his comforting presence as she pushed.

Even though they’d had months to prepare for this day the truth was that Ric was still nervous about being a dad to two baby girls. He was used to dealing with teenagers considering that it was what he was paid to do and between them he and Jenna had four kids of their own already but when it came to babies he really didn’t have a clue. That hadn’t stopped him wanting to become a dad again, though, and even though he knew that it was going to be a challenge it was one that he was certain that he and Jenna would tackle together the same way they always did. They weren’t going to be doing this alone anyway, they had the kids around them and they had their friends as well so he knew that they would figure things out. Ric would be lying if he said that it hadn’t crossed his mind that the girls might end up being siphoners like their mom but if that was the case then he knew that they would help the two of them learn to use and control their powers as much as they could. They already had Kyle who was a werewolf, Elena who was a vampire and Jeremy who was a Special Child so he was pretty sure that they would be able to handle whatever life threw their way next. “You won’t be saying that if the labour goes on for hours,” Ric teased. He knew that Jenna was just as nervous and excited as he was about meeting their girls and it was a little surreal to think that the next time they returned home it would be with the two of them but the truth was that he was looking forward to the home they had been building together finally being complete. As Jenna spoke again, Ric felt a laugh escape his lips. “That makes one of us. Not many people would put up with a hunter who used to drink too much though so thank you,” he said sincerely. He knew that he wasn’t exactly the best catch in the world but he was trying to be better. Ever since finding out about Kyle and Abby he had cut right back on his drinking and he was doing his best to protect the supernatural in Mystic Falls who were innocent so he hoped that he was becoming someone that Jenna and all of the kids could be proud of. “They’ll be here before you know it,” Ric said, leaning forward and pressing his lips lightly against hers. As Jenna spoke again, Ric brought his hand up and let it rest against her cheek. “There isn’t anywhere I would rather be,” he assured her, the same love reflected in his own voice as he spoke. Sitting on the bed next to her, Ric wrapped one arm around Jenna and kept her hand in the other of his. “Looks like they do things in their own time just like their parents. I hope this isn’t a sign for what we can expect from them as teenagers,” he chuckled, keeping Jenna’s hand in his as Jenna reached for the button to call for the nurses with her free hand. As she asked if he would stay with her, he kissed the top of her head gently. “I’m not going anywhere, I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” he promised, Jenna’s hand still clasped in his even as he moved off of the bed so the staff could check on her. Jenna smiled at Alaric's words before she rolled her eyes fondly. "Oh, please. It adds to your charm." Jenna teased with a soft chuckle following. Was Jenna afraid? Definitely. Without a hint of doubt in her. She was scared that it wouldn't go well. She was scared that the girls would get hurt. She was terrified of so many things that could possibly go wrong and make her lose her babies. But with a single look at Alaric, it all seemed to fade. She knew that no matter what, he'd be right there with her. Right behind her back, supporting her and helping her get through it. She knew that she could trust him with her life. He was the best thing that had ever happened to and that much could be seen in the way she looked at him with so much love in her eyes. She really had no doubt her life would have been completely dull without him. He added so much to her life. The best part was waking up with him, having her morning routine with him. It felt so domestic and so... Incredible in the same breath.
She was lucky enough to be pregnant with twins, too. So her life really could not get any better than that. She had Elena, Jeremy, Kyle, and Abigail in her life. They meant the world to her. Just like how Alaric did to her. She smiled at Alaric when he held her and refused to leave her side even when the nurses fussed about her. They checked to make sure that she was ready to deliver. There was a pressure in the small of her back telling her to push.
Jenna squeezed Alaric's hand tightly as her nerves ate away at her insides. Was it a painful experience? Without a doubt. But it also passed in a blur. The doctor was telling her to push, so was the nurse beside her and soon enough, there was a single cry that broke the tension of the room but not even seconds later, the urge to push came again and it was the reminder she needed to remember that she was pregnant with twins. Jenna threw her head back and screamed through the intense pain to push her second baby girl out and the cries of her baby girl soon joined in with her sister's and like that, a huge weight was lifted off her chest. Beautiful little Lizzie was given to her dad and sweet little Josie was given to Jenna to hold onto her. "Hiii." Jenna whispered soothingly as she held her baby girl close. She turned to look at Alaric with tears filling her eyes. She was tired but having them close made it all worth it. Every single painful second. Every kick. Every interrupted sleep. It was all worth it. "They're here. They're actually here."

Ric had been thrown in at the deep end when he found out about Kyle and Abby but he knew that it was the same for Jenna when she became Elena and Jeremy’s legal guardian. They had been through so much over the last few years but one thing that Ric had learned was that they were a formidable team. No matter what life threw at them they could handle it as long as they were together and he knew that this wasn’t going to be any different. Ric couldn’t deny that he hadn’t actually thought about having children but he had adapted becoming a dad to two teenagers and as soon as he and Jenna had learned that she was pregnant he had known that they would both adapt again. It might not have been something that they had ever talked about and their family was already pretty messy as it was but from the moment he had learned that they were going to be having a baby he had loved their daughter unconditionally and that hadn’t changed when they had learned that they were going to be having two babies instead of one. He had realised pretty quickly that they were going to need a bigger house but that was easy enough to sort out and now they and the kids were all settled in and they’d had a great Christmas together it felt like it was about time that the twins joined them too. Ric knew that he and Jenna both would have loved to have them with them over Christmas but that was something that they were going to have to wait for. “I’m sure so many people would argue with you but thanks,” Ric chuckled. Jenna had made him want to be a better version of himself than the one that had moved to Mystic Falls and the kids they had already along with the twins they were going to be meeting soon enough were more than enough motivation for him to stick with it. He wasn’t sure what the future was going to hold but he knew that he was going to be there for Jenna and the twins in the way that he hadn’t been given the chance to be there for Helen, Kyle and Abby and even though he was nervous he was looking forward to every minute. They had already built a life together and now the final pieces were about to fall into place. Ric kept Jenna’s hand firmly grasped in his and kept giving her words of encouragement. He hated the pain she was in but soon enough a cry broke out and before he knew it not just one of their little girls was with them but the second was as well. It wasn’t long before one of them was being handed to him while the other was being handed to Jenna. “Hey baby,” he said, leaning down and kissing the top of their daughter’s head gently. For a moment he couldn’t believe that he was holding her but as he glanced between the two girls he felt his heart swell with love for the two of them. “It seems so surreal,” he admitted. “They’re beautiful. You did so well,” he said as he leaned forward and kissed Jenna gently. “I don’t know about you but I think this one looks like Lizzie,” he said, tilting his arms slightly so that Jenna could see the little girl that he was holding better. I’m sure so many people would argue with you but thanks,
Jenna gasped at Ric's words. 'Send them my way and I'll siphon their asses. Make 'em regret ever thinking that." She said with a chuckle following which ended with a wince because God, it hurt to even laugh. But soon enough, she was ready for delivery and even though it was so difficult and painful, she managed to pull through it and soon enough, she was welcoming two beautiful girls in her life. It helped so much to have Alaric by her side, his presence was enough to fill her chest with warmth and relief despite everything going on with her body.
His reaction when he saw the girls was more than enough to make her feel like all that pain was worth it. She appreciated it so much and she was so grateful that she was given the chance to cradle those girls close to her chest like this. "Thank you," she said with a soft smile as she returned the kiss with one of her own. "I couldn't have done it without you by my side." Jenna said, her voice raspy. She looked at the girl that Ric was holding and gasped. "Yeah, yeah, she really does." She reached to gently brush her thumb against her cheek. "Then the little one is Josie." Jenna said with a soft smile on her lips. "Welcome to our lives, little ones."

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you did siphon them,” Ric chuckled. He had learned a long time ago not to get on the wrong side of Jenna because the truth was that she could be pretty fierce when she wanted to be, especially when it came to the people she loved. Ric knew that he had made a lot of mistakes over the course of his life and too often he had thought that the answers to all of his problems lay at the bottom of a bottle but ever since Jenna and the kids came into his life he had realised that he couldn’t have been more wrong. He had wanted to become a better person for all of them, to become the man that they needed him to be, and he wanted to be exactly that for Jenna now. She had the difficult job of bringing the girls into the world and he knew that he was going to be right by her side every step of the way. “You did all the hard work,” Ric said, a smile forming on his face as he looked down at Jenna. “You were incredible.” He wasn’t there when Kyle and Abby were born and he hadn’t even learned that they existed until they were already teenagers but with these two girls he had the chance to do right by them and he knew that he was going to be there for them through everything. His smile widened as Jenna agreed with him that the one he was holding looked like Lizzie and that the one she was holding looked like Josie. “That’s settled then,” he said with a nod. “We’ve been waiting such a long time to meet you.”JENNA SALTZMAN
